im pretty sure if a jp/anime style game had fatalities it would get blocked from steam and treated as porn

DoA is a better fighting game series then MK and had a better gimmick.

I continue to be glad that not liking the violence and gore means I will never have to care at all about MK. Maybe it turns out to be the best fighting game ever made and steals 100% of every other game's playerbase, in which case well, time to move on to other games I've been meaning to play (it won't do this).

Also "player expression" has been a buzzword for a while and means about as much as "loose" and "emergent gameplay" for how it's used 99% of the time.

Nah, there's literally an entire category of "Adult Only" Steam games.

steam blocks, a lot of japanese games that dont even have porn in them for really spurious reasons, and gore is a big one

Was it Marvel Infinite?

Also if this was MVCI then that's real rich because the only player expression I remember is loving Ultron/Dormammu

Ya of the footage they showed the backgrounds really stood out. The draw distance in like Johnny's mansion stage just seemed to keep going. The Shaolin temple training ground stage and the, I guess, Edenian garden stage were especially beautiful looking.

the only anime games I hear about being unjustly blocked are things like chaos head noah which was banned for having a "put the anime 16 year olds in their underwear" dlc
apparently it got unbanned and the dlc still exists tho so idk what's up

MK11 felt so loving godawful to control and move around in. The NRS style seems to be playing with characters who are congealed in a full body layer of mud to make sure they don't feel good to move and they're going to make a billion dollars just by jangling keys anyway so there's nothing in MK12 that could sucker me into giving them a third chance.

Also the animation is still garbage after five games in the modern era and they've got no reason to bother trying to improve it when they will make just as much money by putting animation effort into the key jangling of fatalities

Yep bad game

What they block from sale outright is wildly inconsistent and based on whoever happens to be working that day. Generally if it looks anime it’s chances of being banned from steam skyrocket

Edit: porn or otherwise. Chaos;head was slapped with the “child porn, ban from sale” flag until twitter bullied them into unbanning it (unprecedented and unlikely to see any decision overturned ever again)

Yeah, Sonicfox is always going to be a NRS kid just like a bunch of us are forever Capcom marks (myself included). They've diversified a lot over the years and proved that they're one of the best in the world, but their home is MK

So, a weird question about fighting game history, that I feel like someone here has the stupidly esoteric knowledge to answer:

I've heard the story at some point that tier lists were invented specifically to explain how Pet Shop was so much stronger than everyone else in Capcom's JoJo fighter. But when I raised that on Twitter, nobody seemed entirely sure; a lot of pre-2005 fighting game talk is lost. A few people (including me) remember seeing early Melee tier lists, which Pet Shop would predate, but that's the best people could figure on this.

So, is there any truth to that one? When did tier lists get invented, and what stupid thing required them!?

From a bit back, but there is a negative infinity percent chance that this is true. I distinctly remember an issue of GamePro having a tier list for Mortal Kombat 2 with an entire ten point matchup chart and overall totals for each character.

I'm sure they had this for a lot of the big name fighting games, but MK2 is the one they stands out in my head because Reptile was dead last and that made me sad as a child

yeah as others have said this dates back to early versions of street fighter 2. as soon as you have a game thats entirely 1 on 1 matchups between two disparate characters stuff like this is gonna exist

It's possible that a Tier List in the letter style wasn't even informally made for a while into fighting game history, but yeah I remember stuff like this. Like, I had specifically this issue, even.

people really undersell how quickly fighting game knowledge developed because while a lot of the language is different and idk how accurate a tier list this is for super sf2 they're still basically talking about the same things we talk about now. like 'balrog's bad matchups are mostly low tiers so they dont really matter that much' is a concept that some people struggle to grasp in 2023.

hakan isnt even that killer of a matchup against balrog? it was more lack of matchup knowledge and hakan having abusable stuff if you dont know the matchup.

pretty much every tier list from both before and after that match has hakan/balrog as 5:5 or 5.5:4.5
