I am extremely surprised how good SWI is. I haven't played it since the new map.

Hey, seeing as Getsu Fune is considered 'contested', would TER AG and ANT hate me if I throw my hat into the ring as well, with a defence platform by the Savage Spur gate? :v:

Nah they don't care about that don't worry. I also finally finished the paranid plot with the buccaneer outcome so now I have finished all stories with an unmodified save

Oh cool - thanks for that! I'll have to build one then, to help out. Since the Terrans and Argon are focused on other areas too much right now, so the Xenon actually managed to wipe out most of the sector! (I've been up in Wretched Skies, making stacks of cash, then happened to notice the sorry state of Getsu Fune... ah boy)

Also, nice! The Paranid/Duke's Buccaneer and Split plots are the only two I haven't had the willpower to go down, yet. Once I get some prints for my new L fab bay and can make lots of cash, I'll have to sort both at once. (Hopefully Zyarth being reduced to a shipyard won't break the Split plotline too much :v: )

As I understand it none xenon/kha'ak factions at war are supposed to only attack each other's military ships and leave trade ships alone.

This seems to be the case in my game but only if I'm out of sector. As soon as I'm nearby all enemy trade ships get massacred, usually banging up my trade station in the process.

Has this always been the case? Does anyone know what might be causing this? I really miss hanging out and watching all the traffic while I map-game but now it's raining laser towers.

This sounds like the ships are respecting the honor settings but the turrets - which are abstracted when you aren't nearby - are just running the Attack All Enemies script which apparently doesnt respect honor settings.

I claimed the Yasur Mk2 (it sucks that they didn't make it clear there'd be a difference in the teams winning vs losing), but now I have no clue where it is.

EDIT: Found it, it's an entirely separate button in the Venture Inventory.
Apparently you can claim one every 24 hours, and it's exactly the same as the Yasur Mk1? Is the Mk3 also the same as the Mk1 (ie. no mods and stuff?).

It's possible they just differ in the weapons that're on them by default, and that the Mk3 that someone spotted, which was fully modded, was really just an edited savegame.

Does Added option to re-enable mouse steering automatically mean that if this option is left unchecked, mouse-steering won't enable when you're using HOSAS?
If so, loving finally!

Does Fixed physics mass being too low for certain objects such as asteroids mean I can no longer fly into an astroid in my Yasur Mk 2 at 24km/s and have it be launched way the gently caress away?

I've also not yet seen mention of ships (especially large traders) that are trading for build storage buying more than one thing at a time, despite going to trading stations that have everything in stock and for sale.

Most efficient isn't how I'd describe it. Least effort? Absolutely.

If you enable the trade-filter using the hotkey, then zoom in all the way on the map, you get to see the wares it's requesting for build-storage, so you can click them then zoom out and find the wares at trading stations you've placed satellites at.
That lets you easily see the amount you need to buy and set up buy orders to fill the ship storage completely for each ware requested.

Usually I'll grab whatever I need and a bit more, then simply trade it with build storage so that there's always a bit extra there.

I just bought X4 and the DLC during the sale, having skipped Rebirth entirely, and being a big veteran of X2 and X3/TC/Argon Prelude.

So far my experiences and muscle memory from previous games has not helped me as much as I hoped in getting started so I need some help and advice. Did the Joe whoever Foundation start, doing some Hatikvah thing and got a message about Boron, Word, Gates, etc that I am working on. Looked at some beginner/tips vids that mentioned I should also get PHQ quests going.

What is gonna confuse me if I try to treat and play this as X3? It seems a far bigger change in feel and aspect compared to the jump from X2 to X3. There is crew on stations with varying skills that I imagine I will want eventually. I can have captains/pilots for my ships but I can seemingly remote control everything as well. Inventory and Cargo is gonna confuse me until I get used to what counts as what. My inventory seemingly being infinite is making me want to go hoover up everything in sight into my Bag of Holding.

FrickenMoron

It is in fact a good idea to do that. You can also assign ships to do this in places on repeat order.

OwlFancier

My big suggestion from X3 is don't bother with universal traders, or trading generally for the most part. You can make money doing it but it's not like X3 where you just spam them until you print it.

You want first to start with setting up sector miners, then progress onto having them provide raw minerals to a refining station of your own, then expand the refining station to produce more complex goods. The economy is actually fully simulated so producing goods from raw materials is how you make money.

I would also suggest, as soon as you can, start buying large size miners, because they're a lot more resistant to the odd pirate or khaak you might encounter, medium miners tend to suffer attrition. They're not so bad at the start in small numbers but for the long term you want large miners.

Trading is still useful since it keeps the eco flowing. It's not the big moneymaker anymore of course but its money nonetheless. I also prefer being proactive against khaak and destroy their hives/installations when possible.

Also the Yasur owns so much as a player ship, it would be hard to ever go back from it so I'm glad its unlocked for every savegame.

Very good, the economy actually existing is gonna be real neat compared to X3.

OwlFancier

Another option is using your starting blueprints to make a solar power plant, which unlike X3 just produces energy cells for free. Those actually do print money but they do it fairly slowly cos you end up selling at rock bottom prices to undercut everyone and they cost probably about a million credits to set up the first one, so it's a good bit more expensive than a medium miner. That said, you can power your own stations with them too, so that's good. Generally you want to stick a solar panel on a station rather than buying in ecells. Each processing step basically adds value to the product, so the more vertically integrated and domestically supplied your products are, the more money you're making.

You do want to start thinking about distribution later on, building actual trade networks and distribution stations to spread your production across the entire universe, but that's a later thing really, for the most part you want to focus on actually gathering resources and processing them to get money.

FrickenMoron

I felt so loving betrayed in X3 when the first station I bought was a solar power plant and it required CRYSTALS which require 2 other wares to make. While the faction solar plants required nothing!

So, I've not played since I started that lets play because we decided to get a puppy and vastly underestimated the amount of time it would take up daily...

But the little bugger decided to chew through our fibre cable the other day so I've been without internet for the last 2 days and it's given me a little free time to play as I've not been able to do other things.

I booted up a new game, using the same settings I used like 400 posts back and holy poo poo, within about 6 hours the xenon have taken over 6 sectors and cut off the whole highway, I was playing terrain and only managed to get a single decent station up before I got slapped with 6 destroyers..

That game didn't last long at all

Tried 6.0 after a break, medium ship AI seems to have gotten much worse. Am noticing a lot of un-necessary pathing, a lot of boosting away from enemies without purpose and lot of spent time flying alongside their target without shooting......

But large ship AI seems to have gotten more cautious, and I have not seen a single destroyer travel-mode to their death since I started playing, so props to them for that I guess?

EDIT: I am considering a writing a mod that just removes medium combat ships from the game. They're useless so why have them?

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

They're pretty fragile, being neither maneuverable enough to evade nor durable enough to tank, against larger ships or a comparable value in small craft.

You either, I think, want to go for a mass of fighters, or large craft for the qualitative increase in range and firepower. Frigates especially are very undergunned for their size and also pretty flimsy.

Corvettes can be better as a kind of superheavy fighter, but I would probably still just buy more fighters for general use.

They're good if they can bully small numbers of smaller ships, but they aren't very good if they come up against something that can fight back.

FrickenMoron

Gunboats are good for sitting on your big ships M docks providing extra turrets. And M ships make for good player use, but for mass AI combat use I agree, theyre too flimsy and expensive at the same time.
