as the world turns
Here's a fun thing out of Arizona. One of the media's election experts is Garrett Archer (maricopa incoming), as he used to work elections before working for news in the area. One of his favorite (?) hobbies is to kindly yell at idiots in Arizona, such as the Cyber Ninjas or Mike Lindell, that don't know what they're looking at or don't know election law.

So every now and then, some chud will try and own him with some in-the-weeds Arizona elections procedural thing, even down to the database level. Which he knows, because he was an Actual Election Expert.

Enter Jordan Conradson, Gateway Pundit chud. In his goal of owning Archer, he committed a Class 6 felony (basically a heavy misdemeanor):

Here are the general rules:

https://twitter.com/Garrett_Archer/status/1669507638311424001

Here's what the idiot posted (the felony, retweeted by Kari Lake):

https://twitter.com/Garrett_Archer/status/1669496778549518336

and the big kicker:

quote:

@MaricopaVote has confirmed the signature example @ConradsonJordan illegally published DID NOT PASS at level 1.

Meaning not only did Conradson commit a class 6 felony, he did so with a signature that went through the proper verification process.

OMG. It's even better. The signature was MANUALLY CURED. Meaning they had to contact the voter to verify the identity of the voter.

You can't make this stuff up.

Update: I'm told this matter is already referred to law enforcement.

So in an attempt to own a reporter, this idiot committed a felony and proved that the process actually worked - a signature mismatch was found by the county elections board, they contacted the voter, and fixed it. Also the idiot is a woman-beater.

Everyone knows that one of the reasons Texas wanted to secede from Mexico was because Mexico was going to outlaw slavery.

However, there was a new mandate that said the Mexican national government would have total control over all of the land owned by Mexico, including the land of Texas. This was a secondary reason why Texas wanted to secede from Mexico. Siete Leyes.

Anyway I bring this up because I find the new law hilariously ironic.

There is no comparison anywhere in America to the conditions South Africa is in. "Load shedding" blackouts for hours at a time every day, where even things like street lights stop being powered and unemployed people start directing traffic for tips. Unemployment is something like 30-40% and they have the worst income inequality in the world. Every property in Johannesburg is fortified with really high walls topped by electric fencing, barbed wire, or spikes of some kind. poo poo is falling apart everywhere. Cape Town looked better off than Johannesburg but still had a lot of the same issues.

One of the dead giveaways that you're in South Africa when playing Geoguessr is that you see houses that look like they could be in reasonably nice parts of the US or Australia, except they're all fortified against a no poo poo armed invasion. Plenty of homes have walls all over the world, but these walls rival the ones at the Bin Laden compound in Pakistan.

I was in Nicaragua not too long after one of their more lawless periods and I was at the extremely humble house of one of their communist senators and even his tiny, glorified shack was surrounded by a 10 foot wall. I stopped at several other prominent political families' houses that were similarly fortified, but the image of a fortified shed really stuck with me. The US has a lot of failings and a laundry list of issues but idk states actually breaking down are a whole other beast.

back around 2015 I'd sometimes get a distinctly post-soviet vibe (relative to my experience there ~early 2000s) in some rural American areas where it was clear that there had been basically zero major infrastructure spending in 20 years, but that was a lot more local and to some extent the product of boom/bust cycles. Still that was a pretty superficial, localized look much more than any real similarity

Daniel Ellsberg is the kind of American anyone in government should strive to emulate.

Minus taking home those nuclear secrets. That was bad Daniel, very bad.

You did write a pretty cool book about those nuclear secrets decades later, but I’m much less interested in that than the pentagon papers.

I had a blast in South Africa. The people, scenery, and wildlife were incredible.

As a tourist I never felt really all that unsafe, if you got any attention it was generally to try to sell you something. And with all the unemployment I don't blame them, I bought stuff from them pretty often. Even something "overpriced" was only a few dollars at most in USD. I had nothing but great interactions with people, they're extremely friendly.

I highly recommend going to South Africa as a tourist, and the people could certainly use the money from tourism.

But yeah I would never live there, despite how much fun Cape Town is. It's impossible to escape the effects of a failing government.
