Here's the full bit from that Colonel. quote:However, perhaps one of the most fascinating presentations came from Col Tucker ‘Cinco’ Hamilton, the Chief of AI Test and Operations, USAF, who provided an insight into the benefits and hazards in more autonomous weapon systems. Having been involved in the development of the life-saving Auto-GCAS system for F-16s (which, he noted, was resisted by pilots as it took over control of the aircraft) Hamilton is now involved in cutting-edge flight test of autonomous systems, including robot F-16s that are able to dogfight. However, he cautioned against relying too much on AI noting how easy it is to trick and deceive. It also creates highly unexpected strategies to achieve its goal. Bolding and italics mine. "Simulated" is a key word here - this story smells weird, it's such a cliche. How high up were things simulated? Edit: And like, how does it know to blow up the specific comms tower? That feels too cute. Wombot fucked around with this message at 00:51 on Jun 2, 2023 |

Wombot posted:Here's the full bit from that Colonel. Presumably an AI that is conducting SEAD missions has to be able to understand the difference between a radar site and a radio tower. It also has to understand the difference between friendly and hostile installations. I can imagine that one of the scenarios the AI is trained on is how to complete the mission in the event of loss of comms. From there it's not a huge leap to "shoot the hostage " level decision making.

Yeah it makes perfect sense if it's a human. If it's a neural network or whatever, no. What does make sense is if this was like a wargame with ChatGPT or whatever. Which, sure, the drone (simulated) blew up (simulated) the operator (simulated) but that's based on 100% simulated sensors, data, and weapons in a simulated sandbox that the AI has full access to.

Mostly because there isn't anything better. That and if you had to avoid transphobic fascist-run entities, you'd have to put down your phone, then smash it to pieces with a hammer. Except that hammer was probably sold by a big business sending contributions to transphobic fascists, so I'll just keep blocking advertisers and bluechecks versus headbutting my phone to death. Also twitter spaces melted down in the DeSantis announcement because the twitter spaces team is three whole people.
