Modus Pwnens posted:The UHD versions on Max streaming are a horrible smeary mess. I was hoping the discs would be better and saw decent reviews online, but maybe not? I'm not an expert on the subject but I think the uhd corrected the "over green" issue from the blu ray at least. I've yet to watch my uhd set though.

I I could never store my movies in boxes, because mentally I feel like if you can see all the spines and all the movies are easily accessible, then it's a film library. And film libraries are good and everyone should have one and expanding your is a fine thing. But if they're in boxes, then it's a horde. And a horde is a problem. This does create the stack loophole, where if I've run out of shelves and have started to stack then it's still fine because I can see all the spines. But that's just how my brain feels about it.

TheScott2K posted:It's the thing that actually sells It feels weird these days being a blu ray guy, because 80% of normal-rear end people just buy DVDs and then maybe 18% of physical media nerds have fully switched over to UHD. I think blu rays are fine, I have over 200 (300?) of them now and I'm not going to pay like $30+ each to upgrade some of them. They're better quality than streaming, miles better than DVD (although DVD can be fine too depending on the release), totally adequate, and cheaper than 4k a lot of the time. But then I also still have a modest-ish 45-inch TV that can't do 24hz

It is kind of amazing how well DVD upscales, particularly at screen sizes and viewing distances that are only just now, thanks to $400 65 inch TVs, fading out of the norm. I'm sure as hell not buying them, but I really get how good-enough it is for normals who just want to watch something offline. I buy 4Ks for movies I really care about but normal rear end bluray still looks so drat good, especially when put up against streaming.

My aforementioned Shape of Water rewatch was astounding, like seeing a whole new movie just because of the lack of compression through streaming. I have an old Panasonic Viera plasma TV which has great size but is only 1080p, but things look good enough on it especially with upscaling. For now, at least - I would like to upgrade to a Roku TV or something that can do HDR and 4K.

If there is a noticible quality jump in the scan used then I'll put the BD in my sell pile and replace it with the UHD, but for stuff that's "Mastered in 4K" and only has a BD, I'm good with staying with that (the Shout Factory BD of Glengarry Glen Ross looks FANTASTIC). Now the real question for this thread: What if you want to physically own something but every single official release of it looks like dogshit? I'll still buy DVDs if they're super cheap (like a buck or less) at a thrift store and it looks interesting.Nightmare Cinema posted:If there is a noticible quality jump in the scan used then I'll put the BD in my sell pile and replace it with the UHD, but for stuff that's "Mastered in 4K" and only has a BD, I'm good with staying with that (the Shout Factory BD of Glengarry Glen Ross looks FANTASTIC). Clara Bow's It from 1927. All that's out there are the OOP Kino DVD that is getting more expensive than I want to pay and some sort of low quality PD company release.

I'd hold on to that thing until you can get an OLED or QLED. FrumpleOrz posted:I'll still buy DVDs if they're super cheap (like a buck or less) at a thrift store and it looks interesting. Are we talking scans or packaging? For scans, there's no region 1 version of Takashi Miike's Ace Attorney or Sion Sono's Antiporno so I just burned my own custom copies and had some fun designing custom discs and packaging. Would love to learn how to make the actual menus and special features to make them as legit as possible but yeah, sometimes you just have to slap some things on a DVD-R/BD-R. For packaging, I get customs on Etsy or just do it myself. I do have a hard time with DVDs these days, I still have some of my classic horror stuff on DVD and I'll throw those on during spooky season sometimes but I'm very aware of the difference in quality when I'm watching. Like before To Live and Die in L.A. got that recent UHD release I had the movie on DVD but I hadn't watched it in several years just because I wasn't satisfied with it anymore and I felt like the next time I saw the movie I wanted it to be in a better quality format.

My funniest DVD release is a hard-encoded-letterbox version of Weekend At Bernie's because it makes it postage stamp-sized. It cracked me and my partner up when we were going through our physical media collection to watch stuff we hadn't seen and pare it down a bit. Weekend At Bernie's For The Sega CD.

Only dvds I’ve bought recently were porn from VinSyn. Those have great encoding and great care to the PQ that I could be fooled into believing they’re blu-ray if I didn’t pop in the disc myself.

I just remembered I have a hard-subbed Japanese DVD of David Lynch's On The Air because nothing else exists that isn't a 240p YouTube upload. Also Bill Zebub gave me DVD's of The Worst Horror Movie Ever Made and Jesus Christ: Serial Rapist that I'm never getting rid of.

Jackie Chan: Emergence of a Superstar (Half A Loaf of Kung Fu, Spiritual Kung Fu, The Fearless Hyena, Fearless Hyena II, The Young Master, My Lucky Stars) Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets Claude Chabrol's La Ceremonie Terrence Malick's Days of Heaven Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show Nothing immediately jumps out for me personally as I like the Jackie Chan set conceptually but don't really love any of the movies included. Hope this leads to future Jackie Chan sets though. Might look at The Last Picture Show; I hear good things.

I haven't seen My Lucky Stars but it was made right in the middle of that period where Jackie was doing a lot of work with Sammo Hung, so I've been looking to check out out for a while now. I've been putting a nice little Jackie collection together recently so I'll probably grab that set at some point during one of the sales.

Also bummer that there's no Snake in Eagle's Shadow included, which is like the early Chan flick.

The Lucky Stars movie are all mostly solid, although some of the comedy can be kind of jarring and dated. There’s a fair amount of misogynistic stuff. The only other Jackie movie I’ve seen from that set is The Fearless Hyena, which is an extremely fun early Jackie movie with some really impressive acrobatic stuff during the training scenes. The trailer also has an insane earworm of a song based on the movie’s Japanese title of Crazy Monkey: https://youtu.be/B6asvY_trEE Monkey Punch also did a completely unrelated animated intro for the Japanese release featuring Not Lupin, Not Jigen, and Not Fujiko.
