its pure management disconnect. You've got a bunch of middle and upper management putting in long hours with no social life so of course it seems like this great idea to them that the company artificially manufactures a social engagement that requires no effort or personality on their end since everyone is going to kiss their rear end either way.

It's the exact same thing as people praising working in the office. If I could afford to live 5 minutes from the office I too would be singing the praises of some airlocked work environment where I can just focus on getting poo poo done when I need to but the reality is if I have to spend half an hour minimum each way commuting to the office the benefits are negligible if any.

I can believe it. The few times I've dealt with mandatory fun at work that wasn't just an on site party during work hours, it's either resulted in cross-site teams being reorganized such that each location then just worked on it's own as separate team, or people being flown out for the get together, only for them to decide "yeah, I'm going to find a job that won't do that," and leaving the company for greener pastures within six months. That's incredibly anecdotal of course, but it does break the idea that it's anything close to a clear signal of a good place to work.

If Linus thinks these events mean it's a good place to be for everyone, lol, lmao.

That reminds me of this one IT job I had years ago. During the summer they had a golf league, so everyone that signed up for it got to take off at like 1 or 2 PM on Wednesdays and Fridays, or something like that. All the upper managers and VPs were in it of course, and they had plenty of open spots for anyone else who wanted to join (and there was no lack of people who signed up for it).

Of course it was mostly an excuse for people to smooch the asses of their bosses, but for me (who doesn't golf), it meant the help desk was nice and quiet for the rest of the day on those days, because most of the usual "troublemakers" were out on the links. :v:

The Computer Chronicles is my main one. It was a PBS series headed by Stewart Cheifet and Gary Kildall that ran from 1983-2002ish, and they have entire episodes of the series on Youtube. The computers weren't retro at the time but it's fascinating to see how much computing has changed in my lifetime. RIP Gary Kildall.

Retrospector78 is a channel I've looked at on and off. Similar to LGR but maybe with a bit more of a hardware focus?

When I worked at Fry's circa 2005-2006, that's how we all legit bonded. Just drinking being in early mid 20s and hating where we worked. Gaming their systems was one of the only perks of working there, having a Supervisor label something on clearance when it was some fancy new DLP TV for someone as long as they bought the warranty to make the store numbers look good, or keeping a processor that was in super high demand for someone so they could get a discount on it.

And then just getting absolutely blasted at a bar after closing.

Also man, MichaelMJD did another video on something that's just been covered by another Youtuber (this time the iOpener LGR covered last week). I like his videos but it really feels at times like he's heavy on the trend chasing and burning concepts out too fast. Like the OS-tan videos he did a while ago where one video really hit big and he did like 5 more within the next few weeks with rapidly declining results. And then did the exact same thing with weird Wii softmods a few months ago. Spread these ideas out my dude for the love of god, I'm really hoping he doesn't go in on the buying clearly fake stuff from Temu thread after that fake Pokemon video exploded because those videos are the exact opposite of what I want to watch.

the box was rented by the workplace, and considering that the woman who went off on the c-suite continued to be employed for 5 more years after the incident because there aren't just perfect contract manufacturing injectable chemo drug compounders lining up at the door in Albuquerque, NM; they determined that the box is technically the workplace because the events were officially sanctioned (which is true), therefore all the work rules applied to the box.

I know people who'd go and say it wasn't that bad, you just had to go get a beer and drink it away from the box and any of the supes/managers who were there that day.

Well, it's hard to say how much of the improvement came from flipping the unducted fans and how much came from increasing the RPM of the ducted ones. It's an interesting project, though you can get similar results by just using one of the "brute force" cases he mentioned with good airflow from the start.
