it's crow time again

someone got the password for a side paypal and gmail of mine and tried to buy a $1600 gaming laptop. it was my fuckup; old password, shouldn't share passwords, etc

the real fuckup was in talking to paypal support over chat. they texted my phone number a code like they do for 2fa. it comes from the same number as their usual 2fa too, so i was looking at my text messages like

1234 is your security code. don't share this code.
2345 is your security code. don't share this code.
(now)
3456 is your security code. this will expire in ten minutes.

and then the tech asked me for the last two of my SSN and sent a special secure message box for typing in personal info, except it didn't let me type in just two digits, it demanded nine digits.

i've never had a legitimate conversation with support feel so much like getting scammed

a paypal account is kind of like getting scammed. the scammers would provide better service though

Posing as the bank or money transmitter helpdesk or similar helping you out of a scam is a common scam technique actually, however if the secured chat thing shat itself it is more likely to be the company itself, scammers actually test things in order to make sure they work right.

a while back I was griping about giving t-mobile my debit card/bank info to not have my bill raised $15/mo. guess what, AT&T is doing the same thing. now there’s no big carrier in the us that doesn’t charge significantly extra for using a credit card. hope you got a throwaway bank account somewhere

why dont you just set up bill pay from your bank so you are sending the money from there instead of having them just pull it from your account?

it was legit, they'd just changed it on the user side without telling the tech. corporate is corporate, no matter the company

the non-www domain goes to a page entirely in chinese that translate says tells me says "This website is temporarily unavailable" and gives a list of possible reasons, including "Your website may contain information that is not suitable for dissemination, please contact the website administrator." lol

Speaking of domain name regs, I couldn't remember if we talked about these Maryland license plates advertising an online casino but it looks like MD clawed back the domain name from the Filipino casino :(.

I used to have those Star Spangled Banner plates and now that I live in the midwest I still see them from time to time. It brought me a smile that the state didn't keep up with the domain printed on each one.

any and all government agency or affiliated organization of any kind should be legally required to only use .gov domains and it is incredibly frustrating every time i have to go to definitely-not-suspicious.com to get official information from my county or whatever

At the same time, I think letting US states use .gov was kind of weird. I liked https://www.schoolname.k12.stateabbrev.us or blah.stateabbrev.us.

Just searching "department of revenue" I get dor.wa.gov, floridarevenue.com (lol), dor.georgia.gov, https://www.revenue.pa.gov and dor.mo.gov in the results. At least make the state .gov namespace be .stateabbrev.gov or something. Georgia looks weird being spelled out. But maybe people in the "M" states would have a hard time remembering all the abbreviations idk.

Italy has also second level domains for cities or counties with sometimes either shortened or full length if not both. Thankfully very few people uses them since it generated incredibly long domains and made seo hell.
