some friends and I are picking the div 2 up. it'll be their first time, and I haven't played since launch.

the amount of stuff to do looks a bit overwhelming. can we still just follow the main story line without getting too distracted by freemium currency and free DLC side content?

Division 3 is still a ways off. Late 2025 at the earliest I'd say.

I don't know what version you picked up, but I would recommend the WONY expansion. It's legit good and opens up lot of things to do.

As far as how to progress, you can follow how it went for regular players.

Do the story, hit max level, then go up world tiers, capped off with clearing Tidal Basin. Then jump to NY and do that content. After that, it's slowly climbing the 'make numbers go hire' ladder.

100% you can follow the main story line. Assuming you are picking it up fresh, there are like 3 "main" phases

Phase 1: Oh no we gotta rebuild the white house
Phase 2: the gently caress are the black tusk and why are they invading
Phase 2.5: Lets find out more about the virus and wait.. Is that The antagonist from the first game?
Phase 3: Warlords Of New York DLC required: Hey its the antagonist from the first game! Lets go to NYC and kill him
Phase 3.5: Russian Ogliarchs and pregnant ladies. This is the "Seasonal" content that they release every 4-6 months.

The side content is

1) Descent
You can do this without the DLC and its a neat mode. You start off at lvl 1, with no build, and basically get weapon, skills and talents. There is some story content at the end done via audo files, that doesn't spoil anything but goes into the creation of ISAC

2) Summit
You need WONY to do Summit IIRC. Summit is more of an arena based mode, where you go up a sky scraper, and each level is a quick fight. Sometimes the fights are escorts, or king of the hill. At the end of summit you DON'T parachute off the skyscraper, which is lame (Summit is fun if you want more shooting, less story / exploration)

3) Classified Missions
I ... honestly think Classified Missions were done for lore nerds. These are quick, story based missions that you had to pay money for IIRC.

Yes but you can't do anything with groups. I don't know even know if you can see other players at the BOO or other social spaces. No MP also means no raids and probably no excursions once they're released.

They're basically mini-raids. Usually just a few rooms that all require certain tricks or mechanics to clear.f

You do what you gotta do, but the game is clearly designed around group play so canceling PS+ will definitely limit things for you in the game.

The way Division 1 defined them incursions were basically harder missions for 4 players, though I’m sure there’s people out there that have done them with fewer. Compared to the 8 person raids in Division 2 they are far simpler and if they had unique mechanics they still tied back into regular gameplay. For example in Lost Signal there’s a bit where you need to protect hostages from a minigun turret, this didn’t happen anywhere else in the game. But to protect them all you needed was a good shield in the right spot. There was nothing on the level of what you needed to do in even the first fight of the airport raid.

So instead of organizing 8 people and everyone having to schedule hours out of their day and studying YouTube videos to know what you need to do in what group and in what phase of the third boss fight you could just play a harder game if you wanted to.

Yeah incursions are just Division 1's take on raids. I hope they don't keep the siloed off 8 player raids with extremely obtuse mechanics for 3; it was an interesting experiment for 2 but I think its run its course much like the experiment that was splitting up the DZ into tiny zones.

fake edit: incursions are doable with less than 4 players (there's speedrun videos of it floating around) but it's nothing compared to the raids in 2 basically telling you to gently caress yourself if you can't wrangle a full party of 8.

I’m working on the season track , need another 25 or so levels to get the new exotic LMG. I did find a named one called Black Friday the other day that’s oddly I’d never seen before even though I don’t think it’s new. It’s not brilliant, just gives 22% weapon damage at the expense of some accuracy and stability (which you can fix with what attachments you put on it) it has a very fancy skin though. Will go into the stash once I’m proficient then back to the Pesty.

The incursions are new to Division 2 (they were in Div 1). Basically a 4 person raid. It has 4 'rooms.' There's not as much bullshit puzzle/mechanic stuff compared to the 2 raids. It definitely requires good builds and good communication. Your top tier players are clearing it in like 15 minutes, but for your first time, it's going to take a while. I think my last clear was 25 minutes or so? Basically if you know what you're doing it won't take long.

You absolutely need a great DPS build or a great healer build. Most of the incursion requires 3 DPS and 1 healer.

Can you matchmake into it? Yes. Will you finish it? Only if you get lucky and matchmake with people who know what they're doing.

There's plenty of videos on YouTube on how to do it and what the builds are.

For builds, the short version is that DPS is built around Strikers/St. Elmos Fire and Healer is based around Future Initiative and BTSU gloves.

Your Black Friday LMG is not an exotic, but a named high-end item. High end items can have a unique minor attribute but they almost always have 'perfect' versions of talents. In this case, Perfectly Unhinged. High end items are great. I don't usually use LMGs so I'm not sure how Unhinged ranks these days.

Thanks for the incursion info, I only have two irl friends that play D2 and they’re even worse at it than me so I’ll try my luck in matchmaking I think. I read somewhere that it was a four hour job and wasn’t going to bother. I usually pack a pestilence, coyotes mask, contractor gloves, door kicker vest, Knees with LMG damages (can’t remember which brand) and whatever chest I fancy. Seems to work ok.

That build is probably fine for most content, but once you get into the more difficult poo poo like the raids and incursions, that build probably won't cut it.

This is based on the current DPS meta:

The Striker set is ridiculously good right now ever since they 'fixed' it. The blue mods are all PFE. There's a few ways you could change that up. You could use a high end chest piece instead with something like obliterate or maybe Unbreakable, slotting in a striker piece somewhere else. You could use the ninja backpack or even a Grupo piece somewhere instead of the Ceska. I like running the striker chest and backpack because in the incursion, the enemies are so tanky, it's easy to get the full stacks. You could also go with all red rolls, but I like having a little extra durability. There's a few spots with bullshit mortars and other poo poo that can sneak up on you so the extra health helps a lot.

This build is extremely easy to put together. You already have the Coyote mask and you should have the St Elmo's Engine from the season reward track. Everything else will take you less than an hour to farm in Countdown or Summit.

No. That's probably Hunter's Fury you're thinking of. Strikers builds a damage stack. The chest piece increases the number of stacks, and the backpack increases the stack damage. The stack decreases over time (so keep hitting poo poo). You used to lose stacks for missed shots, but they removed that, and then it became OP. You don't need to be close, but accuracy is important, so get at a comfortable range.

If you only used it with the Tac50, you're probably fine. The changes they made to it were that it only buffs specialization weapons now instead of granting a generalized weapon buff after you get a spec weapon kill. This seems specifically targeted to kill a niche build that used a Tac50 to give a damage boost to regular sniper rifles.

Yeah I was using the general dmg buff for other weapons, not specifically sniper rifles, but other weapons in general on top of running 6 reds. Guess I'll give Strikers a try if thats the current thing.

You can try it sure. The issue with that is the stronger enemies in raids, etc, won't be phased by the pestilence gimmick. Even in normal content, I guarantee using a build similar to what I posted will clear rooms much faster than using the pestilence thing.

Holy crap you weren’t kidding. How the hell have I missed out on this one for so long?? What a spanner lol.

Turns out I didn’t have any Strikers gear, must have shredded it ages ago. Only had a blueprint for a backpack too. Luckily one of the NY missions has that gear dropping today so I just did it on challenging and gathered the rest. Not fully optimised yet but just went for a quick stroll past an Elite TC and some random enemies and it’s almost unfair how much damage it does. Like 400k + crit hits from that AR.

Cheers for the heads up!

If you want to farm gear do countdown or summit. I also recommend doing heroic so you get better quality loot. Also if possible do it in groups since more enemies=more loot drops=more chances for loot.

I'd also use an ACS shotgun in the second slot to quickly build stacks.

Returning player from launch with some frustrating questions.

How the gently caress do you see your party members' quests?
How do you select your team members' quests?
Can you select them if they're not currently active in a squadies' log?
Do you need to walk them to the location of the dungeons the first time? Or just start it from the map?
Why do they sometimes trigger when you walk up to the dungeon, and sometimes need the button push?
Does main story progression even matter if you're still leveling / gearing up? Will you be progression gated at higher level stuff?

Been a nightmare trying to get two computer illiterate people to understand the UI in this game, its seems purposefully designed to be as opaque as possible.
