One of the screening questions we ask is (via zoom, it gets sent in text too):
"Is 146.289.22.155" a valid IP address? Why or why not?

I'd say about 50% get the first half, and maybe 10% can get close to answering (and maybe all the way there with a little probing/small help), and less than 5% actually can answer with some actual depth. These are applicants for senior roles that specifically ask for cloud and networking experience.

you just might be surprised.

wtf? Hasn't everyone seen the episode of csi where addresses go to 355? This is like the basics of OSI!

Around here I don't even get a glance for Network jobs or monitoring/observability jobs despite having deployed & configured sd wan devices and spun up entire bank branches for years, so maybe it's my resume. Guess I'll pitch in, as times change.

Actual stuff:

My experience: a decade with solarwinds and Cisco equipment, primarily. As mentioned above, things revolving around monitoring &, network engineer are both usually my scope. Didn't deal with ACI/spine & leaf much but spent a lot of time with 3650s and nexus gear, 2911's, 4431s and forescout nac appliances.

What I'm looking for: I'm comfortable with anything from cybersecurity to junior SRE to monitoring/network engineer. I'm happy to reskill to fit, as I've been trying to move forward with python & rust but not there yet. Hours flexible, even 2nd shift. I did a lot of monitoring ties to NOC's & training em before.

What I'm NOT looking for: something that is full time in the office. Hybrid is manageable.
Where I live: Crystal Lake, IL (about 1.5hrs from downtown Chicago but that commute is fine for me)
When I can start: 1 month from offer
Requirements: Competitive salary, prefer remote but hybrid near Chicago or NW suburbs can be managed
Can be reached: PM. Can provide resume / LinkedIn profile. Probably my resume sucks or LinkedIn or both.

Disclaimer because I've been a stupid newbie before: I acknowledge I made stupid decisions in the past and was involved with Crypto and regret it. I want nothing to do with it at this point and I'm happily not dealing with it any further.

this would be a better question with 289 in the first or last octet. i kept looking at it like "im sure this is a stupid trick question" but kept glazing over 289 in the middle, it didnt register in my brain till the other poster said 355, and i dont even have interview nerves (though i suppose toddler fog).

Yeah I was really confused thinking there was a trick in that question other than “number too big” so I’m glad I’m not the only one.

It took me a second but I knew to check each octet individually because it seemed like the most obvious thing after I ruled out it being a broadcast address for a common subnet.

I had a router that rejected any IP with .255 as the last octet even with a subnet of 255.255.0.0 or whatever. I think the field validation just looked for .255 in the last field and that was all it did.

Should have set it to a /28 and see if it let you use .127

I got laid off a couple weeks ago from the best job I ever had, except for the part where it was in the mortgage industry and they cut more folks from IT when the housing market went from bad to worse.

My Experience: 16 years in IT with experience on basically every level; I’ve been on the help desk, I’ve done some networking, I’ve been a systems administrator, and I’ve been a manager of both a help desk team and an entire IT department. My hands-on experience is in Windows administration, SaaS/on-prem software administration, and VoIP (at this point I’ve worked with Switchvox, RingCentral, and Zoom Phone).

I’ve found that I’m particularly good at taking ownership of software implementations (both SaaS and on-prem) as the primary admin and SME. I’m also great at writing documentation, knowledge base articles, or any email you might need to send out to the end user population-at-large. I’ve also written IT policy documents, including a whole-rear end Help Desk SLA that my manager took to his next gig when he left that company.

What I’m Looking For: SaaS administration and/or sysadmin work would be best, but I'm open to just about anything that would leverage my skills. I work best in a team that gets along well and are supportive of one another. Above all else, I’m looking for something that’s fully (or at least mostly) remote with a good work/life balance.

What I’m NOT Looking For: No help desk (I’m fine advising the techs if they need it, though), no being a one-man IT department, and preferably no on-call (or at least not constant on-call).

Where I Live: Portland, OR

When I Can Start: Immediately

Requirements: Full/primarily remote, a competitive salary, and good benefits.

Can be Reached: via PM

I was recently laid off from my job of 11 years. I'm wanting to make a career change from customer service to IT. My state offers payment for certain IT related jobs. I'm currently looking at these 2 from SnapIT.

Are either of these actually worth the time and effort? If they aren't what should I be doing? What are some others I should be looking at?

What do you want to do?

The hardest part of IT is getting your foot in the door at your first IT job. I'm assuming the workforce services will help with that. I don't know your computer background, but I'd skip the it support specialist track if possible. It is good for someone with zero background in IT though, but it's more of an end user support role....but that might align with your CS background pretty well. I couldn't find details on the cyber security and networking in the 30 minutes video they posted. I might have missed it.

I'd go Cyber Security or AWS.

Semantically, "you" is both singular and plural, though syntactically it is always plural. It always takes a verb form that originally marked the word as plural.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.
Worth checking here — tl;dr I can do automation stuff and can talk to people like people

What I’m Looking For:
RPA development or something automation adjacent — preferably under someone who I can learn from to get to the next step. I’d say that I’m a qualified Junior RPA Developer.

My Experience:
I’m great with ITSM management (5 years FreshService experience), I use my company’s current ITSM to automate all sorts of mundane things (account creation, account update, account removal, approval workflows, basically anything that people hate wasting time on).

Have built Power Automate/Power Automate Desktop flows that follow up on tickets and child tickets all via API. I’m solid on figuring out APIs and honestly love building new stuff to help people. I’ve documented the savings on the RPA stuff I’ve built in my 2,000 person company and it’s at $1.6M since July 2021. I’ll more than pay for my position with hard, verifiable figures.

Fair amount of on-prem AD and Entra experience.

I’ve managed my company’s 800+ Sharepoint sites for two years and made meaningful improvements where I’ve been able to.

I’ve administrated tons of on prem and SAAS programs (Concur, O365 Suite, SharePoint, Adobe, Sage 100, RightFax and a lot more) but dig that much less than RPA.

Basically I can figure out whatever you throw at me and give you an automated workflow that makes sense that are clearly documented, have clear failure catches and will make you look good.

Where I Live:
Florida

When I Can Start:
I’d like to give a month’s notice, my current boss is spectacular

Requirements:
Remote but quarterly travel is acceptable.

Job is with our SRE team, which has no meaning anymore, but the actual responsibilities are to work with app teams to help them with infrastructure and build/release stuff.

This team recently got a new manager whom I don't know much about but he seems nice and is trying to learn things quickly .

Remote is possible, pay is probably low 6 figs, hq is in KC, the app teams you work with are usually 50/50 as far as state side/india engineers.

MJP posted:

We're redoing the JD since it has some outdated crap, but will post it soon. Until then, is anyone interested in being a manager/director of a desktop engineering/app deployment/device management team?

We are an ad agency/adtech company in lower Manhattan. The role would be a mix of managing the aforementioned team and being hands-on-keyboard as well. The team consists of one specialist who does Powershell and Python scripting for the IT infrastructure team, and one other guy who does Intune, Workspace1, application packaging and deployment, desktop OS patching, group creation automation (e.g. automatic joining of AD groups based on user attributes through an application whose name escapes me at the moment), and escalated tickets involving the above from the helpdesk.

You'd also be doing some form of executive support - I'm not sure what exactly, likely ensuring that the one-offs who sign paychecks and don't want to do MFA at least have other stuff to keep them safe and unphished. Not ideal, I know, but it's not me making the job spec.

You'd report to an SVP of Infrastructure; the role is titled as a director but it's really more of a manager.

I'm not sure of the pay but they're pretty decent in compensating me as an Azure engineer/architect. Benefits are decent - healthcare through UMR, but we pay less than my wife who works for CVS corporate pays, and they own a drat health insurance company. The role would be hybrid - Tues/Thurs in office starting in September, Tues/Wed/Thurs starting in January. Unfortunately they can't do 100% remote - one of the first things on the plate is finishing off a migration and the in-person time is probably necessary. Location is really close to the 1 train stop for Canal Street, so it's not an awful commute.

LMK if you're interested; I can pass your details along and can send the posting once it's available.

Edit: the posting is getting updated as soon as HR can get it up, but here's the details for the curious. Don't be deterred if you aren't 100% on every single requirement - the one big thing is they need someone who has management experience and understands the technology while still being OK with the occasional VIP white-glove support situation.

Edit 2: the job posting is available, please PM me if you'd like the link!

Quoting because we are still hiring for the role, please LMK if you are interested

I'm handling architecture and strategy and doing a little hands-on work, and I'm looking for someone I can work with directly to handle most of the hands-on building and admin tasks on the customer's tenant.

My experience: 10 years at different forms of NOCs(network operation centers). Have worked with major and minor ISPs, an MSP, and Oracle. Have a CCNA, it's expired but I'm studying as we speak to refresh it again.
What I'm looking for: Anything that needs someone experienced in networking, troubleshooting/maintaining them, and monitoring them. Or anything that can make use of my skillset and wouldn't mind training me in whatever else they need, I really love learning new tech stuff.
What I'm NOT looking for: Dayshift jobs. Due to a medical condition, I can't really work dayshift jobs without things eventually becoming dangerous for me. I'm no longer in a position where I can say no, however, so if you don't have any nightshifts available, feel free to hit me up anyway.

Hi people. I posted the below in the main working in IT thread, then noticed this one, so I'm reposting it here as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey people, some goon advice needed.

So I'm self-employed, little business involving deliveries and distribution.

But it's kinda gradually drying up, I'm looking for something more steady and predictable.

So the UK is operating a free Skills Bootcamp to fill in holes in the job market. Generally seem to be a part-time 3 month course, with a qualifaction, guaranteed interview etc.

So I was thinking of trying one of the Digital courses.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/find-a-skills-bootcamp/london

Now I do have experience in IT, just well out of date. I used to be a professional computer toucher 20 years ago. Coded RPG400 and SQL, little Visual Basic. But I haven't touched them since.

Here's the problem. Looking at the Digital list, I have immediate decision paralysis. There's a lot of courses and I've no real idea what's likely to be a good one to go for in 2023, especially for someone who's 51. Note that I don't think that it's I couldn't do any of them in particular, I meant employers will be automatically looking for fresh 20 somethings in some of those roles so probably going to be very hard to get into.

If any of you can glance over the Digital list and make any useful suggestion I would be super-grateful. The only courses I'm actively 'Ehhhhh I'm not sure that's for me' about is the Digital Marketing, which don't sound like my cup of tea. Everything else I'd love to hear an opinion on.

Thanks.

Similar to you, IT experience doing all kinds of admin/setup stuff but it was years ago. Just keep it in mind that to break into the cloud sphere you basically need to be set up with a company, have them like you to the point where you're allowed to touch cloud stuff and get the experience you need to be hired for it when like job hunting or whatever.

AWS certs are useful things to have, but they need to be in combination with other things. Combining that with Python skills and some general CICD stuff like K8s would put you in good shape for a entry level cloud automation role. There's almost no job that just requires 1 cert.

There's a spell of doom in the air at my current employer, so I figured I'd post here.

What I'm looking for: Datacenter and/or network technical work. Building cool stuff is preferred to support services.

What I'm NOT looking for: On-call rotations. Been there, done that, not interested in going back.

Experience: 3 years of network/datacenter VAR/MSP helpdesk + 4.5 years of network/datacenter VAR project design and implementation. Have CCNP Enterprise, Microsoft Azure Architect (though the cloud isn't really my jam). Familiar with Cisco Catalyst, ISRs, firewalls and a bit of Nexus, as well as Meraki, enough Juniper to be useful. Also good with VMware, Hyper-V, NetApp, Cisco UCS (though not big ACI stuff), Windows Server, Linux.

Where I'm located: Vancouver, Canada

Willing to move: For enough money and a green card, sure. Preferably somewhere it doesn't snow 6 months of the year.

Requirements: Hybrid is preferred, fully remote is okay.
