gaerea/blackbraid/ wolves in the throne room live report:

gaerea: these guys are alright but don’t translate well live imo. the singer, mainly. tries very hard to be vessel from sleep token in his theatrics but spent most of the show going “buhhhhh… GUUUuhhhhh?? Denver???? GAEREA!!!!!!”. there’s all sorts of melodies that I like in their music that couldn’t make it through my earplugs.

blackbraid: owned. a lot. a ton of genuine stage energy, music came across really well, more feeling in it than listening to it cold. singer had some pipes, everyone on stage drank a ton, rhythm guitar dude spit in my face. would make a point to go see them no matter who else was on the ticket.

wolves itt: lol they suck a bunch, I’m already in an Uber home, bitch

Despite some tech issues in Blackbraid's set, this show was pretty good! There was a strong outpouring of Native Americans at my date. Several of them would yell out war cries in between songs in Blackbraid's set. Pretty cool to see the support! WitTR's set was also plagued with tech issues. Nathan's guitar kept dropping out, but they finally got that fixed. Strong bill from top to bottom in my opinion.

Came here looking for modern-ish thrash. Thread delivered.

Is thrash still the correct sub-genre for the early Metallica/Megadeth/Anthrax style where the music is loud and fast and the vocals are more mainstream? Nothin' against the growls/screams but I prefer the vocals that have more of a punk-with-notes sound.

i think what you might be getting at is tech thrash since the latest of those tracks were released in '88, a genre which never fails to deliver imo. as for your question, there's some speed metal influence but that all still gets lumped into thrash ya

Yep, just tossed "tech thrash metal" into YouTube and a bunch of awesome poo poo I've never heard of came up. I apparently may also like prog metal.

Thanks for the help. Knowing the correct search term makes all the difference.

no problem! it's my favorite metal subgenre next to techdeath so i'm happy to share some recs (though those Testament and Megadeth tracks more more extremely competent thrash rather than tech thrash lol). not sure what came up on Youtube, but personal favorites:

Voivod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xoKzh6mrR8
Watchtower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj75-n0WTV0
Anacrusis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbBTOE4g4YQ
Deathrow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGOXuR_9z-U
Artillery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nJrkXwAD3I
Annihilator: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTYHYglem-M
+other bands that i've checked out before but don't remember specific songs of like Mekong Delta, Aspid, Sadus, etc

worth noting that a good number of second- and third-tier thrash metal bands started out as straight thrash but refined over time, like Voivod and Artillery, so you might not get that same sound from their earlier stuff

It's been Dan Beehler on vocals/drums ever since I saw them the first time at MDF 2016.. but yeah the vox were kinda rough at times but serviceable enough. Daniel Dekay on guitar was fuckin incredible though

That's Panopticon's thing and not really part of the whole Western vibe Wayfarer has been doing, but maybe they added bluegrass element to this one.

I bought the new Dokken CD. I love Dokken, have their complete discography, including Breaking the Chains when it was released under Don Dokken before Elektra remixed / reissued it (this is a bootleg CD, an awesome bootleg). Back for the Attack is their best record. Give that one a listen if you're unfamiliar with Dokken. Kiss of Death and Night by Night are my favorites from that album. I'm gonna be rockin' with Dokken this weekend.

I also bought the new Autopsy, finally picked up Crypta's second disc, and my New Standard Elite order with Infibulated and Internal Suffering showed up in the USPS. I loving love metal.
