It would not surprise me if that Astro panel van was still chugging around. Even less if the back doors don't close anymore, it has a single working headlight at any one time, no muffler, and drinks 5qts between oil changes.

What good little vehicles they are/were. A tall, small truck based van, available in any configuration possible, with proven drivetrains, great parts availability, a surprisingly comfy cabin, and decent driving dynamics.

It's one of those vehicles people deride until they use it in anger. For example: beer and softdrink distributors in the US held onto them until the mid 2010s. Great for the work. A bit thirsty for a salesperson to drive around all day, but capable enough for a salesperson to do their regular jobs, run out product for special requests, deliver or collect displays, and even tow a small trailer for events or demonstrations.

Hell, in Tampa Bay, Coca-Cola and beer distributor route managers were given a take home Astro/Safari, and there was a tradition for those who climbed up through the ranks to put chrome wheels on the thing to denote that status. A "pretender" would lose his rims to fleet maintence if they hadn't earned them (they'd take off the chrome ones, replace them with steelies, piling the nice wheels in the back).

Long live the van! Long live the mini van! Long live the mini-van!

I liked our 2000 Astro. Passenger version, so full interior and windows, two rear benches. 190 HP 4.3L Vortec. Yeah, a bit thirsty - 16MPG as I recall, but I didn't feel like that was bad for what amounted to a 2-ton brick. The '95 Facelift made them a *whole* lot more attractive. I would love to turbocharge an AWD model. Or V8 any of them.
Fun fact: they are a unibody with a front subframe, so not actually truck-based, though a lot of the suspension and rolling parts are shared with the C/K, as I recall. I still have a set of rear brake shoes for it (that were actually bought for the previous Sonoma pickup, yet still fit.)

Dude says in the video they wanted to build something as if Ford were selling it today with modern hotrodding ideas.

Stock for stock, the 2.3 EcoBoost can be had with as much as 350hp in Focus RS trim vs the YB's 201hp. Plus, from the Cosworth guys I follow, you're not getting a freshly built YB for anything less than £5000 with many builds twice that. This guy is is North America where I assume he can have his choice of 2.3's out of any number of wrecked rental Mustangs.

Oh, thanks. I skipped around the video a bit as they launched into :words: backstory at the beginning. The build must've cost :homebrew: anyway so I'm not sure the cost would be a significant difference, but using a common modern engine surely would make everything much easier.

I remember seeing this on Top Gear at one point. When it was pointed out that one of the buttons did nothing, the maker shrugged and said "if all the buttons worked it would be an Audi."

This is awesome, I remember going to events with my dad that looked just like that in the late 70's, and he 100% was wearing the same plaid shirt as half the dudes pictured here.

We were literally the only people wearing hearing protection, and for that I'm eternally grateful.

I went to a car show today and saw many awesome things. Let me share them with you.

Bubble top Impalas are awesome.

This truck-rear end truck is awesome.

This long and low Pontiac is awesome (and for sale for $150k!).

Hilariously wide tires that make no effort to fit properly are awesome.

Race car Corvairs are awesome.

Wagons are always awesome.

This S10 with a drift-spec angle kit and reversed headers just for the sake of running exhaust out the hood (complete with X-pipe) is awesome.

Engine setback measured in feet is awesome.

Lastly, this hilariously tiny truck is awesome. It was like a Photoshop come to life. It would have been funnier with an itty bitty open bed though.

Right thread, IMO.

Why didn't GM make an El Camino out of the last big station wagons? I know the answer, and the equivalent low-spec C/K/Silverados were better in every way, but it would have been cool.
