Any idea where this is from? The Central European WRC I was at would get shut down (and one stage did get canceled) if spectators did poo poo like this, I'm pretty sure.

99% sure it's an event called Rally Legend in Italy.

*edit: 100% sure, I've just seen that exact corner in a video :v:

This is pretty awesome AI poo poo, local guy just took his Suburban past the 1-million-mile mark. Had the valves redone around 400k miles, but it's all original aside from that.

I am skeptical that the 700R4 made it a million miles without a rebuild.

If it did it in under 13 motors then it's more impressive than that recent Tesla.

Still wouldn't make it a million miles. Clutches wear, my dude.

edit: FWIW, the article does not claim that nothing was rebuilt, just that it's original stuff, and doesn't mention the trans one way or another, and does acknowledge that it was maintained by a mechanic.

Also, it's a 700R4 (well, 4L60 by 1994 probably). It's a major miracle if they make it to 250k without failing, even with meticulous service.

Did they get worse over time?
I am aware that miles are smaller than kilometers
My parents had an 84 Caprice wagon with the 700R4 according to my dad and when we finally got rid of it, it had 545,000 +/- km on it.
Still worked the way it was supposed to, never rebuilt just serviced somewhat regularly.
And me and 3 of my brothers learning to drive on it, and doing the usual teenager poo poo with it.

The 700R4 was fine in Monte Carlo’s and Camaros and the like, even a Caprice. But they were decidedly underkill for a 5,300lb truck with a V8. It’s telling that GM replaced it in those applications with the Turbo 400-based 4L80E.

According to Wikipedia you are correct. 1993 for trucks and vans, 1994 for RWD passenger cars.

Fair enough. I have no idea how much the wagon weighed, but the trans was behind a carbureted 305 which probably helped too.

Not a replacement exactly, but it was available with the big block depending on the options.

Mine's a 95, 454/4L80E (with barely 1/4 his miles), and his 4k redline matches mine. Not sure if the 350s were different, but I assume so.

My grand uncle inherited his father's 1987 GMC K1500 long bed with 50,000 miles on it. He used it to tow his work trailer another 150,000 miles until a semi pulled out in front of him and the truck ended up underneath the semi trailer. His trailer snapped the frame and came to rest half-way into the GMC's bed, totalling itself.

Whatever sentimentality he held for the vehicle fell away when the replacement 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500 long bed got considerably better mileage and broke down less that Dad's old beast. By better, I mean low double digits and left him stranded once (fuel pump).

Well, that and significantly better brakes, steering, and everything else.

As was mentioned, only if you got a big block. Small-block GMT400s made do with the 4L60E through the end.

And how lovely/under-spec is the 4L60E? Our '97 L31/4L60E Suburban blew the transmission to bits at 40k miles.

Yeah that's the other part about cars in cities. They take up space, roads to accommodate them, places to park, infrastructure. You can to unload all that and go "now it's a bicycle lane" and it's so, so much better.

It seems to be getting really bad in NYC, what with all the suburbanites bitching about the planned Congestion Pricing which means they can't solo drive their 25 foot long SUV and double park in a bike line while simultaneously blocking ambulances and fire trucks because their vehicle is 12 feet wide.

Cars are parking more and more on the sidewalks and crosswalks because there's just not enough space. There is a lot of entitlement felt by city car owners to be able to indefinitely park their private property on public space and do so for free. (In a city where living space costs like $700 a sq/ft)

I know this isn't car poo poo but there's gotta be a way to make driving in a big city feel more like C'etait un Rendezvous and less like the tunnel scene in Independence Day where the dog does a dope rear end leap to escape the wall of fire.
