I feel like this deserves to be posted here... https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceUK/comments/1974t9g/police_have_seized_my_wifes_laptop_after_one_of/ quote:Location: England. The "friend" apparently hit on the wife and she turned him down. So this poor woman is going to have her life destroyed because a guy couldn't handle being rejected. Still I have to giggle over the fact that the UK police need 18 months to look at Skyrim porn mods.

Half of r/legaladvice is creative writing. The other half is literal cops banning people for saying "stop posting about your crimes on a public website and hire a real lawyer".

if someone was real mad at you and had your laptop, they'd search the browser history or look for social media accounts. booting up skyrim on someone else's laptop and then wandering the wilderness until encountering rapewolves is not even slightly plausible.

That's honestly the only believable thing about this, IT investigation depts in basically all countries are horribly understaffed. I think it was one in... sweden? that had literally just one loving person for a bit.

If I brought my laptop to a friends house for a party (and I can't imagine why I would do that unless I was supposed to be the DJ or something) I'm not leaving it there. And also, I know the UK doesn't have anything resembling our first amendment protections but I can't imagine they have a law that would criminalize Skyrim mods outside of simulated child pornography.

I mean the source may indeed be suspect and the story itself even more so, but it's important not to underestimate how absurdly petty and power-obsessed English cops can be. I can absolutely see them confiscating, holding, and searching a laptop just because it had weird (but not technically illegal) porn on it. All it takes is for one officer to voice the thought that "if they're into stuff like this, they must be into some other weird stuff that IS illegal," and they are 100% the kind of people who like to make brilliant and legally defensible deductions of this kind
