I feel like this deserves to be posted here...

https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceUK/comments/1974t9g/police_have_seized_my_wifes_laptop_after_one_of/

quote:

Location: England.

My wife left her laptop on at a party at a friend's house. One of her friends, apparently, booted up Skyrim and he discovered that my wife has installed quite a few NSFW mods on it.

This includes non-human enemies, such as wolves, attempting to non-consensually mate with the player.

The police seized her laptop two days ago, and this morning, she has just received a request to attend an interview at the station. They have advised that her laptop will likely not be returned until mid-2025, but if she complies with the investigation it may expedite the process.

Should she attend this interview? Is it okay for me to go with her to offer support?

My wife has quite a few rather unusual fetishes, but these arise from childhood trauma, so I usually just let her do her thing.

Additionally, the "friend" who found the Skyrim wolf stuff has been posting about it on Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, and emailing my wife's employer (who he doesn't seem to realise is actually another relative who doesn't give a poo poo.) Is there any action that can be taken against this individual?

The "friend" apparently hit on the wife and she turned him down. So this poor woman is going to have her life destroyed because a guy couldn't handle being rejected.

Still I have to giggle over the fact that the UK police need 18 months to look at Skyrim porn mods.

you should realize that most of that sort of segment of reddit is mostly creative writing exercises

Half of r/legaladvice is creative writing. The other half is literal cops banning people for saying "stop posting about your crimes on a public website and hire a real lawyer".

if someone was real mad at you and had your laptop, they'd search the browser history or look for social media accounts.
booting up skyrim on someone else's laptop and then wandering the wilderness until encountering rapewolves is not even slightly plausible.

That's honestly the only believable thing about this, IT investigation depts in basically all countries are horribly understaffed. I think it was one in... sweden? that had literally just one loving person for a bit.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed shitposting.
If I brought my laptop to a friends house for a party (and I can't imagine why I would do that unless I was supposed to be the DJ or something) I'm not leaving it there. And also, I know the UK doesn't have anything resembling our first amendment protections but I can't imagine they have a law that would criminalize Skyrim mods outside of simulated child pornography.

If I'm outside I'm either with people I trust to not do weird poo poo with my stuff or my devices stay with me and never leave my possession. I do have passwords/lock screens on most of my devices just to be safe, but I've literally never had to worry about someone having physical access to my devices even once.

I mean, same. That was my whole point. Who doesn't set their portable media devices to auto-lock after a few minutes? It's like those weirdos who never lock their car or front door.

I mean the source may indeed be suspect and the story itself even more so, but it's important not to underestimate how absurdly petty and power-obsessed English cops can be. I can absolutely see them confiscating, holding, and searching a laptop just because it had weird (but not technically illegal) porn on it. All it takes is for one officer to voice the thought that "if they're into stuff like this, they must be into some other weird stuff that IS illegal," and they are 100% the kind of people who like to make brilliant and legally defensible deductions of this kind :v:

didn't the uk make laws banning porn with a bunch of really common/mundane fetishes, like spanking? that aspect of this scenario strikes me as pretty believable.

Yeah, they made the production of porn featuring spanking, female ejaculation, face-sitting and so on illegal. Was eventually overturned, but they've not stopped trying to find new ways to make porn illegal, or making it so you have to like register your porn consumption with the state. IIRC, they wanted to make you have to sign in with your actual picture at some point before you got to jack off.

So yeah, the UK is definitely the obvious choice for a creative writing exercise of this type.

There's this lovely bit of law which is worded vague to the point where loverslab content would fall under it.

The prose wasn't great, but I was actually pretty caught by the plot and characters, and hope we get to read the sequel after that cliffhanger of an ending.
