Maybe if we'd gotten that Stormtrooper rebellion plotline...

Their armor (ostensibly) deflects blasters, so maybe once they got into grab range you'd see more brawling, given bonking them on the head tends to put them out of a fight

I have a question about Revenge of the Sith's soundtrack. I'm trying to find the alternate version of the score for Battle over Coruscant that includes the full fanfare at the beginning rather than just the isolated war drum beat. I know it exists because the fanfare has a reprise later in the film when Cody and the clones first arrive on Utapau and interrupt Obi Wan's duel with Grievous. The variant track is also used extensively in the 2005 Battlefront 2 game for the Clone Wars era levels.

I swear I've seen a version of Revenge of the Sith that opens with the full fanfare but so far my Google and youtube searches have turned up nothing and I'm wondering if I've just done a Mandela Effect and remembered it wrongly and it has only ever been shown with the war drums opening.

Always been isolated drums. I remember because I listened to the rots cd every night until release and really thought the film would immediately kick in the very second the crawl faded.

But no. The war drums played and I was thrown for a loop. First time I noticed drastic differences in available soundtracks vs the actual film

I wanted the full version of the final duels so bad.

E: I hate that they removed the scores from Spotify - now it's just truncated soundtracks and it doesn't flow at all. The PT music is incredible.

I've gotten a lot kinder to the Mustafar fight over time. It's just so ludicrously over the top that it's always made me roll my eyes, but last time I watched it I managed to drop all that and just enjoy the silliness of their melodrama being reflected externally so fully.

I think my favorite lightsaber fight is when Luke goes apeshit on Vader in RotJ. That’s not a visually striking movie overall compared to ESB, but the choreography, cinematography, and score for that bit really hit hard.

Seeing Vader on his heels and out of gas for the first time was also really a big moment there. Is it cheapened a bit now that we know that like 8 other people had fought him to a draw or outright beaten him over the past 15 years? Yeah, but only a bit.

Another great thing about it is that it is very satisfying to watch Luke finally cut loose on the bad guy who cut off his hand... but then you remember that that is his dad and the real bad guy wants all this to happen, Luke stop!

Still like round three in Cloud City the best. Vader has been toying with Luke, demonstrating his mastery of the Force. Then he loses patience and just turns into an angry monster who comes out of the walls and starts hammering on Luke.

I also agree with her even though it's not the best SW movie, but even if you don't agree it's not an especially hot take. It's incredibly iconic even if it's not your favorite.

Part of me wishes Maul had been a total mystery in the trailers, like you just saw his face and knew he was Sith. I realize they wanted to get people in the seats, but I'm pretty sure we were on board anyway.

The problem with every drat lightsaber fight for awhile there was that they had to keep upping the ante with something 'new' that often just feels like a gimmick.

Last guy had a blade staff? Well in this one Anakin has two sabers! And the bad guy has a curved lightsaber.

In this one there's a robot with FOUR lightsabers!

Now we have a wobbly lightsaber with cross guards!

Now its not a lightsaber but a sword because he's not a Jedi honest, but the dude wielding it is totally blind!

Now its not a 'light' saber, it's a 'dark' saber!

I forget what happened in the TV shows, but I remember there was a bunch of efforts to shake it up.

But really I think the issue for me lies with lightsabers being such an iconic 'Star Wars' image that it feels like they always have to force it into the show somewhere.

The reason they worked so well in the OT beyond the 'cool' factor is because they were used to portray a power dynamic or emotional conflict.

I especially remember a bunch of Ashoka bits where there were lightsaber fights 'just because' that didn't really establish or resolve anything, and they repeated it again the next episode.

Real talk: there’s only so much you can get out of two dudes waving sticks at eachother with, like, minimal gore allowed. Lucas was right to continually escalate it in bizarre ways.

However, laser swords have been totally done since the OG films. It was a massive creative failure to include them in the ST setting, where there are ostensibly no Sith or Jedi left. Kylo’s red saber, maybe, as a sign that he doesn’t fully ‘get’ Vaderism - but bringing back the Anakin sword is an infamously dumb thing. Stuff like Manderlorian armour is an adequate replacement for these swords, but I think we can all do better.

Therefore, Star Wars combat should now revolve around those blue electro-liquid orbs from Phantom Menace. That, and “Buzz Droids”.

Lightsabers are cool, but they don't get exponentially more cool when you add more gimmicks on, especially if you don't really have any ideas how to actually do anything interesting with it.

When TPM came out there was the most terrible nerd whining about how the double saber was stupid and impractical (because a laser sword is so practical in the first place). But Ray Park is obviously really good at Shaolin gun style. Ren uses his crossguard saber to hold two enemies at bay once or twice. And the Darksaber just looks cool. I doubt that they'll ever do a live-action saber vs. saber fight with a lightwhip, or a lightonfa, or those Inquisitor swords, because the concept is stupid and probably can't be staged well.

I wouldn't put it quite like that; when he loses his patience, he takes Luke's hand with an elegant maneuver. I think Gillard said something about liking the move because it's fencing but it only makes sense with a lightsaber.

As far as we know from the movies themselves, every lightsaber we see in the OT has been destroyed by the end of RotJ.

-Obi Wan’s lightsaber- probably went in a desk drawer in Vader’s Death Star office, obliterated at Yavin

-Anakin’s lightsaber- fell thousands of feet either to the bottom of a shaft or the surface of Bespin (if it has a surface). Almost certainly busted

-Luke’s green lightsaber- discarded on Death Star 2, obliterated

-Vader’s lightsaber- see above

Edit: I guess Luke picked his lightsaber back up offscreen

None of the lightsaber gimmicks matter if you don't make the actual affects of the lightsaber more terrifying and dangerous. When a lightsaber comes on, I want to have the characters cower and feel the air sizzle with tension. Make us feel that alongside the characters, and you don't need to add anything to them at all. Everything beyond the base-level sabers has only served to make them less threatening.
