Yeah, thanks I’m happy I haven’t picked it up in months. I thought the cirrus thing was bad piloting / people with money and not training but I guess would be a good thing to simulate! Is hand flying rnav approaches not allowed? Or just the automation that’s hosed?

Since the guidance from the GPS was missing/wrong, it didn't matter if you were hand flying or letting the automation do it, since it wouldn't really work either way. The WorkingTitle mods have done a lot to fix the NXi, and Asobo has fixed several underlying issues in the sim since launch, so MSFS has been steadily improving over the last year or so. The Top Gun DLC actually did add a couple of missing features MSFS needed, since we now have working afterburners (those got added when the F-18 was released ahead of the DLC last year), and land-able/moving aircraft carriers, although Asobo doesn't have the carriers useable outside of one specific landing challenge yet.

So it’s not just automation but an issue with gps data or the representation itself, got it. What a mess.

sellouts posted:So it’s not just automation but an issue with gps data or the representation itself, got it. What a mess. It's not even the data, since MSFS uses Navigraph, so all of the information on approaches and airways and such should be correct, but Asobo's "simulation" of the NXi (and every other Garmin unit) was absolute garbage, since it was missing a ton of the core functionality of the real avionics. What makes it even funnier is that Garmin has "trainer" software for almost all of their avionics that works perfectly fine, and Asobo licensed things from Garmin, so there weren't any good excuses for how bad the Garmin's were at launch. In their defense, I suspect that Asobo was forced to launch MSFS before it was ready (it seemed like MS was aiming for a holiday release, and then moved it forward several months when Covid hit), and they genuinely seem to be learning from their mistakes and are making some pretty impressive efforts to fix/expand the sim, which is a hell of a lot more than Microsoft did for previous releases.

Serious question: how bad is the state of the default avionics compared to other sims?

# ? May 26, 2022 23:56 |

There’s really no other sims. X-Plane gives us Civilian stuff. I personally wasn’t super impressed by X-plane’s default planes, nor by their ATC that’s even worse than MSFS. Third party dev planes are all over the place. I don’t know current situation really anymore. I’ve fallen out. DCS gives us military sims and they have varying quality between sub contractors who make modules. Heatblur’s F-14 is way better thab Razbam’s AV-8.

Wolfy posted:Serious question: how bad is the state of the default avionics compared to other sims? Depends on how you define "default". Out of the box, there's still some significant issues, but there's several free mods (from WorkingTitle and a couple of other groups) that fix the vast majority of them, and with those installed, they're generally pretty accurate. As to the FMS's, I don't know as much about them, but they're also vastly improved with a couple of free mods. That said, there is some variability in the avionics, since the NXi is the most accurate because of the attention put into fixing it, while the other Garmin units are still varying levels of wonky, but they're significantly better than they were at release.

azflyboy posted:Depends on how you define "default". That’s the whole reason workingtitle became a first party dev. They’re bringing all of the underlying, driving mechanisms from the NXi into the base sim as the default. If you check out our discord, you’ll see previews of the PL21 and even the 530 as well as the ongoing improvements of the g1000. All of that will eventually be stock with no mods required. So much is happening behind the scene. This will also make it easier for 3rd party devs to incorporate what would have been premium, payware level avionics into freeware aircraft or aircraft that are visually accurate, like with Carenado, but lack avionics specialists on their team. Good things are coming. MSFS is the future of sims.

Am I missing something with getting the Darkstar to go hypersonic? I follow the flight profile on the screen and flip the "activate scramjet" switch on the left after hitting mach 3 like it says, but I can never seem to eke out more than mach 3.7 from the thing

If so, you can't go above Mach 3.whatever at low altitudes, you have to take it way up. I thought it would be cool to do nap of the earth at Mach 10, but it just won't work in the game. Even if you go way up, get to Mach 10 and then point the plane back down, it'll switch back to normal engines and decelerate once you drop below a certain altitude.

The dark star is kind of interesting. It may be completely science fiction and all. But if you fly it up to the MSFS ceiling of 275k feet, it goes basically space shuttle fast. Bringing it down on the ground safely from that speed and altitude, with just the little display for guidance, is a neat little challenge.

I’m sure an actual helicopter pilot would bitch about it the same way I bitch about the inaccuracies in the GPS, but it seems perfectly serviceable in terms of basic manoeuvres up to and including autorotations.

And it's definitely simulated well enough that you have to have at least a foggy idea how to fly a helicopter and what's happening. Lots of the early flight attempts involved the phrase "oh poo poo oh gently caress, what's it doing now, no, please go the other way!"

Fired up MSFS for the first time in a year or so. Took the King Air out for a spin and the bug with the phantom waypoint that you can't get rid of any way but flying to when you load and activate an approach is still there. All the fixes and improvements they've made and this glaring bug that could have been caught before release by someone doing one single IFR flight hasn't been touched nearly two years later. I'm guessing they said gently caress it when they turned over glass cockpit development to Working Title but WT apparently isn't doing anything with the G3X anytime soon, and that sucks because I love the King Air. At least the Caravan is great with the WT G1000.

Here's a super long update on X-Plane 12 development. I have XP10 and 11 did not seem like worth the money, but I think 12 will be a big enough update. Proper volumetric clouds are pretty much a must have to be a relevant sim. https://developer.x-plane.com/article/x-plane-12-flight-model-report/

I think they're very well done and MS would be wise to do more things like this. It's very simple but there are a lot of things I like about it. First off, they have a good soundtrack underneath it that is very subtle but does add tension. Second, they let you crash and it doesn't fail you, it just puts you back in the air. And third they're just long enough that there is penalties for screwing up but not so short enough that I have been retrying them to try to get better times. It's just a lot of fun.

They need "rear end in a top hat sim instructor" mode. I.E. "I expected you to hit the altitudes and break out on the RNAV A into CYKA, but you hosed it up, so here's an engine failure and a vacuum failure at the same time. What you gonna do?" That one's a real challenge. It didn't end well, it was followed up with a second engine failure, and ditching into the lake. But I learned something!

So I dusted off my old Saitek throttle wrong (with a kids wetwipe I think) and now the surface is all hosed up - the sort of 'faux-rubbery' -feeling plastic is all fuzzy, and the back where the rear buttons sit is permanently sticky (and how, to chopper and spaceship jpegs) No amount of scrubbing is getting the gum off and I worry that rubbing alcohol or some other cleaner will make it worse. Which is the right formula to fix it?
