Yea, I have no experience with parabolics, I'm not sure what the "industry standard" is. With shotguns, I would expect to spend $1000+ to get something that might hone in on a conversation 50ft away through a crowd. It's way harder to make a real directional microphone capsule than a normal one, and my guess is a lot of affordable parabolics are just a normal mic and use only the dish for the directionality. If you wanted to use one you would probably want to be in a parking deck or something aiming it down at targets.
