This seems like a pointless conversation because no one knows how fast threadripper can run on all cores, I'm sure it's higher than 3GHz flat, and no one knows how fast Skylake-X can run on all cores. If you're using a 16-core CPU for gaming you're probably overclocking the thing, crazy TDP be damned.

If threadripper really maxes out at 3GHz it's a bad gaming chip but if it maxes out at like 3.7GHz+ it's just way overkill for the application.

Exactly, discussing TR vs SL-X is pointless until we know IPC, maximum frequencies and actual thermals.

So if they are doing price cuts to the top end of the r7s does that mean threadripper could be coming in at crazy prices vs intels offerings?

TR Price rumors by a guy who had insider info in the past. It'd match the picture of Ryzen 7 price drops and rumors of high yields. He also predicts more Ryzen price cuts in the coming months.

16C/32T $750-850

That would explain why the Intel seminar slides 5 days before the launch showed Basin Falls maxing out at 12 cores. Intel never intended to bring the HCC (high core count) Xeons to HEDT, which explains the delays for the 14C+ CPUs. Thanks AMD

Not sure if I'm even buying a CPU this year but I'm more excited about CPUs than I have been in a long time, didn't think we'd be seeing 12-core desktop CPUs for $500 anytime soon.

WTF?!

Slippery Tilde

Woooow they're gonna sell a bunch of them even if the mobo's cost $300+ a pop.

I wonder what the actual server stuff is gonna cost if they're willing to drive prices this low on the desktop side. If production costs are that low and yields are really are super high they can sell for very high discount vs competing Intel products and still make more money than they've dreamed of in years.

If that 16C price is true, I don't think I'll give too much of a poo poo about interconnect latencies. Gaming makes up only a fraction of all workloads.

eames

Yeah what AMD is doing here is remarkable.

8C/16T CPUs will soon become ubiquitous with these price cuts and the potential is there if the rumors are remotely true.
If a 16C threadripper really costs them $120 () they could cut 1800X prices to compete with a 4C/4T 7600K and still have a healthy profit margin as their R&D costs are spread out across the entire CPU (desktop, hedt, server and mobile) lineup.

This will eventually have an effect on the way programmers design future workloads.

There is no way Threadripper and Eypc don't get picked up for enterprise and worskatation use at these prices, it's literally AMD CPU+MB ≤ Intel CPU. Knowing AMD, they'd throw in discounts for buying completely from them, so that means more GPU sales and more sales of their rebranded SSDs and memory. Has AMD made any moves to either source Qualcomm or acquire their own for ethernet controllers?

The HBCC memory controller AMD is talking about has me thinking, could AMD turn HBM2 into a nonvolatile storage medium, or even a PCIE Ramdisk?

The thing is that $500 chip with $150 in direct variable costs has a completely stupid amount of R&D associated to it, probably to the tune of $100-150, depending on projected volume. The margins on the chips isn't that great once you figure in all the other poo poo they need to do to get the the point where they can make one.

FaustianQ posted:

HBM is too expensive AND too fast to justify a PCIE ramdisk. A dual channel DDR4 memory controller attached to a PCIE bridge chip would saturate even a 16x PCIE 3.0 channel.

Couldn't AMDs core counts work against them in an enterprise setting? Given that SQL and OS vendors now charge per-core licensing, you could end up saving tons of money by buying the multi-thousand dollar 8 core frequency optimized Intel Xeons with fewer, much faster cores than a basic 16 or 32 core AMD chip.

The most important enterprise wins will be companies like Google and Facebook, I don't think either of them worries about licensing because they run their own stacks.

While this is true the money spent on faster RAM would likely be better spent elsewhere considering how high RAM prices are. 16GB of RAM would be a good idea, but that would also be pretty expensive. A 16GB version of that system would cost $700, a 16GB system with DDR4-3200 would cost $740 so across two systems you are looking at either $60 more total for slower RAM or $140 more total for the fast RAM.

However I would spring for the 16GB of slower RAM, mostly because I just noticed that the mobo only has 2x RAM slots.
