This is incredibly sedate. Just let three off the front at 0m to get a gap in the first 10 km, then sat TdG and a few other diesels on the front to hold them at sub 4 minutes. Then absolute meditative calm.

Don't see why he'd have to make something up, sprinters abandoning the giro after the first week sprint stages is fairly normal though i will note that the press constantly ragged on Cipollini doing this at the Tour de France to the point where the organizers refused to invite him, and yet when McEwan constantly did that poo poo at the Giro nobody cared. Anti Italian imo

It's pretty normal to go through the pretence, especially when wearing a jersey. Start the stage, oh no my knee hurts, get in the team car straight to airport for a pre-booked flight. I remember a few years back Greipel getting criticised for just openly pulling out without going through the charade. Not that it matters either way tbh
