Jeanette slipped out of the bed, her borrowed chemise billowing loosely as she padded over to the window. The sunlight made her eyes water as she edged the curtain back to look down. The back of the house had a courtyard filled with tropical plants, and beyond that, a carriage house that opened up to a side street.

A pair of male slaves exited the carriage house, making their way across the courtyard. Jeanette leaned away from the window to be less visible, and then turned back to her room. Judging by the shadows outside it was close to noon, and her stomach felt empty. She crossed to the dress that had been laid out for her and fingered the fabric, cool and soft under her hand.

She carefully got into the dress, cinching it up as best she could. There was a little too much lace and the neckline was a bit low, but it fit well enough. A pair of blue slippers went on her feet, small enough to pinch her toes but better than going barefoot.

Combing through her curls, Jeanette walked to the door, putting her ear to it and listening to the sounds of the house. It was quiet, though she could just barely make out the low murmur of speech, possibly the elder Mr. Mercier.

And then….
A.
Jeanette slips out of her room and wanders around the house on her way downstairs for lunch.
B. Jeanette goes straight downstairs to find the Mercier’s and lunch.
C. Jeanette goes straight downstairs into the kitchens to get some food and talk to the slaves

She took a few minutes to pin up her hair, checking her reflection in a mirror before slipping out of the room into the hallway. Jeanette closed the door quietly behind herself, looking up and down the hallway. As tempting as it was to poke about these upper rooms (one didn’t move about in high society without even just a small inclination toward snooping in one’s friends’ houses during parties), she made her way quietly down the stairs to the main hallway.

The voices were louder now, but still muffled. It sounded like Mr. Mercier and his son conversing behind the office’s closed door. Jeanette was able to walk down the hallway undetected, finding her way into the kitchen.

There was a strong, spicy aroma to the room, and a rail-thin African woman was standing at the stove stirring a pot with her back to the door. Mary was sitting at the table eating a plate of food, and she choked as Jeanette walked in, jumping to her feet as she coughed. The cook turned around, ladle in hand, and stood stock still as sauce dripped from the utensil.

Jeanette smiled warmly, immediately sorry she’d startled the poor women so much with her appearance. “Please, be at ease. I didn’t want to be a bother to the Merciers, but I slept so late… could I get something to eat?”

The cook’s eyes merely widened, tracking slowly toward Mary, who had finally cleared her throat and desperately grabbed her cup of water. After a swallow or two, the maid nodded.

“Of course,” she said, “A plate of food. Yes miss.” Mary looked at the cook, frowning slightly, and the other woman jumped into action, piling a china plate with sweet potatoes, jerked chicken, and roasted corn. A glass of wine was offered and gratefully accepted.

Jeanette did not move to leave the kitchen, however, and sat at the table opposite Mary, who hesitantly took her seat as the cook slowly put the food and wine in front of their unexpected guest. Suddenly ravenous, Jeanette spent a few minutes simply eating, her eyes watering a bit from the heat of the chicken, though the creaminess of the sweet potatoes helped soothe her burning mouth.

After a few minutes, a few very quiet minutes, she slowed down and caught Mary’s eye. The maid had picked at the remainder of her meal, obviously uncomfortable with Jeanette’s presence.

“Tell me,” said Jeanette, “I have not seen the Mercier’s in years -- and I am grateful that they have taken me in. Are they good to you?”

Mary’s eyes clouded slightly, almost imperceptibly. “I do not know what you mean, Miss. They are good masters. We are grateful.”

The answer was obviously rote, and Jeanette wasn’t sure what she had expected. She took a different tack, pausing first to take another sip of wine.

Mary's eyes widened for a moment, then a practiced expression of compliance fell like curtains across her face. "Yes miss." She exchanged a look with the cook, who pointedly turned back to the stove.

Jeanette took another bite, shrugging. "Perhaps not tonight." She smiled brightly, and the slave girl looked down at her own plate uncertainly.

"I was quite impressed at how quickly this dress was taken in, and it fits perfectly, too." Jeanette studied Mary, who didn't look up. "Whoever did it has a lot of skill. And Mrs. Mercier has wonderful taste in clothes. Do you know how long she is planning on being in the interior? I was hoping to see her before I go home."

"Mrs. Mercier lives at the plantation, miss," said Mary softly.

"Oh? And Mr. Mercier splits his time between town and the country then?"

"No, miss." Mary clutched at her plate, but remained sitting. "May I go, miss?"

“Of course.”Jeanette watched the girl as she left the kitchen as quickly as she could, and then concentrated on eating her own meal. A few minutes later she leaves herself, sweeping out into the hallway and nearly running into the older Mr. Mercier.

“Ah, there you are my dear,” Jacques said, his face stretching into a smile. “I have been looking for you! You slept well, I trust?”

“Of course, thank you. A most pleasant night, after what I have suffered of late.” Jeanette folded her hands in front of her demurely, and his eyes traveled down toward them, and back up.

“I hope the dress is acceptable,” he said, studying it. “If you like there are plenty more that my wife has expanded beyond!” Jacques laughed, taking Jeanette’s arm in his and steering her through the house. “I hope you will indulge me in an afternoon stroll, Jeanette. It has been a long time since I have had pleasant company.”

Jeanette smiled, wearing a pleasant expression like armor. “Of course, Mr. Mercier. I think I would quite enjoy a walk. After such a long time aboard ship, with little of interest to look at, I am eager to see more of Kingston.”

“Please, call me Jacques.” He patted her hand in the crook of his elbow and escorted her out into the courtyard.

“Of course. Jacques.” Jeanette allowed herself to be led through the courtyard, Jacques Mercier walking at a slow pace as they took in the afternoon. Birdsong filled the hot air and a sheen of sweat quickly formed on his forehead.

He seemed content to point out the native plants and flowers that had been carefully curated on his property, and Jeanette leaned on him slightly more than necessary as she exclaimed over the beauty of it all.

“We have a bit of garden at our home in Saint-Domingue, but nothing like this,” she said. “You must tell me your secrets. Why, a garden party here would be just delightful, with lanterns under the stars on a warm night?”

“Perhaps we shall have to host one, before you return home.” Jacques smiled affably, looking down at her.

Jeanette beamed. “That would be wonderful, I would love to meet more people here in Kingston.” She chattered on about parties she’d been to back home as they took another turn around the Mercier property. While she spoke she looked for any signs of Jean Mercier, but the younger man did not seem to be around, or, at least, he was not nearby.

She carefully turned the conversation toward her father’s business contacts in the area, intimating that she might like to meet other families in the area he was known to. “That is, unless you are the only one?” Jeanette smiled prettily, pulling gently to try to extricate her hand, unsuccessfully.

“Ah, Lucien Vignes has friends in every port, but in Kingston it is the Merciers he trades with. A long and profitable partnership!” Jacques finally released her after a particularly insistent tug, and Jeanette stopped walking to fan her face.

“It is a little warm for an extended walk,” she admitted, the loose hairs by her face and neck clinging to her hot skin. “Perhaps you could show me your library -- I couldn’t help but notice your impressive collection of books last night.”

“Of course, of course,” he said magnanimously, taking her hand again and leading her back toward the house.

It was much cooler inside, the windows placed strategically to take advantage of the breeze from the ocean, and Jeanette sank gratefully into an armchair in Mr. Mercier’s office. She waved off his offer of liquor and asked for water, which was delivered promptly by a curtseying Mary who quickly left.

Jacques helped himself to a glass of whiskey, sitting behind his desk under the pretense of doing some paperwork while Jeanette perused the shelves. There were several volumes of Samuel Johnson’s poetry and various non-fiction works, in addition to a very expensive set of French encyclopedias. A shelf of black leather bound books with no writing on the spines were nearest to Jacques’ desk -- they looked just like the notebooks her father kept his important business records in.

She picked…

A. Some poetry
B. A biography
C. A random volume from the encyclopedia

...to read, and sat down again, very carefully appearing to be engrossed in what she was reading. The shadows lengthened and she excused herself to rest in her room for a few hours, taking a book with her. Jacques continued to write at his desk until a clock chimed seven in the evening as the sun was setting, and supper was served.

Jeanette accompanied him to the dining room where the long, mahogany table was set for just two. As she sat in the chair Jacques pulled out for her, she…

D. ...asked about his son and his wife, and if anyone else would be joining them.
E. ...talked pleasantly about the meal, while trying to find a way to politely excuse herself

Jeanette picked a biography from the shelf next to the poetry books, Life of Samuel Johnson by Sir John Hawkins, and retreated to the chair. Sitting properly, back straight as she turned the pages, she very carefully appeared to be engrossed in what she was reading. The shadows lengthened and she realized that she’d been reading the same page describing breakfast habits of the 16th century for the last half an hour.

Closing the book, Jeanette excused herself to rest in her room for a few hours. As she left the office another book caught her eye: A New and Complete Illustration of the Celestial Science of Astrology. She slipped it off the shelf and tucked it against her skirts as she made her escape.

Jacques continued to write at his desk until a clock chimed seven in the evening as the sun was setting, and supper was served. Jeanette accompanied him to the dining room where the long, mahogany table was set for just two. As she sat in the chair Jacques pulled out for her, she looked pointedly at the empty chairs along the table.

“Will Jean be joining us for dinner? Or Mrs. Mercier, perhaps? You mentioned that you would send for her today, I was so hoping to meet your lovely wife.”

Jacques chuckled, pouring wine for her before taking his seat. “I sent Jean to retrieve his mother, they will not be back until the morrow.” He lifted his whiskey, and Jeanette mirrored his gesture with her wine. “To family friends,” he said, draining his glass as house slaves brought in the meal.

Jeanette sipped her wine with a smile, inwardly taking note of the expressions of the others in the room, all carefully blank. No one made eye contact with her, which was not necessarily suspicious.

She drank her glass of wine over the course of the meal, while Jacques refilled his whiskey a few times, growing more and more jolly. He tried to top off her wine and Jeanette…

A. tried to politely refuse

C. accepted but did not drink anymore
