Wow, big news in the PDX beer scene - The Commons is closing up shop at their Belmont location and Modern Times is moving in: http://brewpublic.com/beer-news/the-commons-brewery-will-cease-operations-as-modern-times-beer-will-take-over-its-space/ Thankfully it sounds like The Commons will probably live on - in a smaller capacity anyway. I'm definitely a fan of Modern Times, so I'm looking forward to trying more non-distro stuff from them.

Anyone have any good recommendations for Old Town Alexandria outside of the pizza place? Just moved here from what was a comparative beer nirvana in Hampton Roads and this place just seems a tad devoid of beer culture outside of Port City. I'm afraid I'll have to go into DC if I want anything exceptional, so if you all know anything more, please let me know.

I know there's also a Rustico and they're good about updating their tap list online. Whole Foods should have at least a decent bottle selection, but I can't remember if that one does growlers.

I love when local brewers get a chance to do their own thing from end-to-end and just nail it. Evan Price (the guy who was a part of Noble's rise to the GABF Best Small Brewery) started his own thing (Green Cheek Brewing) and after ~4 months it's already one of the best breweries in a very strong area. No muss, no fuss, just tasty, near-perfectly executed low ABV stuff (the best thing I had last night was a 3.2% Berliner that I would have cheerfully purchased arbitrary amounts of).

The surge of popularity is most likely due to Zenne b2 being released since last year was very chill and didn't have the crazy lines. It's nice that Etre has the shipping deal so I was able to get the Magnums sent to me.

I didn't think they did and already on the first day it was supposedly crazy busy. If they announced it I can understand it. Was the shipping desk manned by Etre? Pretty cool that they did that, first time I saw it at the brewery. Normally when I have friends from Sweden over there's a lot of napkin math, scales, empty suitcases and bubblewrap involved.

Pleasure House is cool because they are continuously making new stuff, and basically have no "standards" that they just push en masse to local retailers. Their stock constantly changes, which is great when there is something awesome on, but can also crash and burn when there is more "meh" stuff on than great. I still liked every trip I made out there, super unique place in a strip mall next to a laundromat.

Good City in Milwaukee was a nice space when I was there a few months ago. Otherwise, I haven't dove into other smaller options there. Lakefront has always been a good spot with solid beer. If you hit NG, make sure you stop into the take-out shop which right now has their brewery-only blonde ale, plus I heard rumors that they had put out some older R&D stuff as available to buy.

Sip of Sunshine started coming here (Maine) recently and the last drop was big enough that it's still in stores a week later, even after the teeming crowds of surprisingly old people trampled one another in their zeal to obtain it. I had a few servings of it over the last several days and it's definitely one of those classic tapes. It really lives up to the "sunshine" name as it's incredibly bright tasting, not at all a NE IPA type of flavor, it's quite malty and doesn't have thos haze but overall it's just a perfectly balanced and unique IPA. And if you want some, hit me up but act fast because I think it's nearing the end of its availability for this batch. Their Super Session #8 (mosaic) is also here and a fantastic shower beer and it took extreme force of will to not buy a 12 pack(!!). I also got some Allagash Coolship Red and actually remembered to buy some for myself this time instead of sending it all away and drat that's good. I'm shocked that it has so much depth and complexity while being super sour and super fruity at the same time. Could this be the true power of spontaneous fermentation? Resurgam was also really good but had mellowed out some as it's from 2016 but keeps popping up for sale down the street. Now I live just a few blocks from Allagash and my crowning achievement was to deliver a refrigerator to a lad who happened to work there and who gave me some complimentary beers as a reward. It's such a lovely place too and always a pleasant experience. I also had an Ardent Rum Barrel Dark Rye that I got from ya boy funkybottoms and loved it. Rum barrels are really under-represented in the diabetes/beer world in my opinion, maybe in part because cheaper brands are heavy in acetone and any tape aged in their barrels tastes like nail polish remover. But, that one was really well done.

Sip's getting brewed contract at 2 roads, so I usually see it in MA every 3-4 weeks. Still sells out day of drop here, but limits are going up from 1 4pack per to 2 or 3 in some places. In other Lawson's news: https://www.lawsonsfinest.com/our-beer/breaking-ground-maple-tripple/ Hopefully I can start getting bottles of the good poo poo with as easy a time as getting Alchemist stuff.

Can anyone in Boston recommend a cool spot to eat and get some good beer in the theatre district or somewhere within an Uberable distance? My girlfriend and I are flying in Thursday after work so won't get in until about 9:30. I was hoping to go to Trillium but I see they close everyday at 7:30. I've heard Jack's Abbey is great for food too but that looks a bit far out. Thursday night is my only opportunity to get anything cool in Boston, the next day have to go to the suburbs for a wedding (Marlborough). Thanks if anyone can point us in the right direction.

Trillium's Beer Garden is open from 4pm til late weather permitting, in easy walking distance of everywhere downtown. You could also hit up Stoddards in DTX for a decent taplist or Jacob Wirth for german stuff. Ginger man in the financial/aquarium area hosed me up right proper a couple nights so that's also a solid choice. but seriously, you should stop at THE TAM for the proper boston townie bar experience, cash only

if i lived in/near Portland, i would try my damnedest to get a job at Allagash... and not just so i'd get dibs on the coolships. glad you dug the beer- the base is fairly well-attenuated, so that sweetness from the rum barrel is a nice accent; it would be overbearing with our milk stout, which already tastes like a loving Tootsie Roll. rum barrels are used whiskey barrels that get left outside and are beat to poo poo, so, yeah, they're definitely a crap shoot, and we recently had to dump one because something started growing on it that literally smelled exactly like dog poo poo. like, no joke, i was walking around making people check their shoes that morning. ...speaking of which, i cellar raided a 2013 Hardywood Rum Pumpkin last night. i can only imagine that i bought it with the intention to send it off, because it's a spiced saison with pumpkin, which sounds horrible. it wasn't, fortunately, but it wasn't great, either- kinda tasted like a mulled, slightly-oxidized old ale, and it was almost cloying sweet. odd beer. nosleep posted:Can anyone in Boston recommend a cool spot to eat and get some good beer in the theatre district or somewhere within an Uberable distance? Took a peek at the beer list at the above festival and the only standout things I saw were the Experimental Fruit series beers from Tilquin, and 3 Candles from Side Project, which was fantastic at FWIBF this year. If you've not had the usual from the other US breweries, a good rule of thumb would be the abbreviated list above.

3 Floyds: ZD/PF Friday, add DL de Muerte Saturday Alesmith: Vietnamese Speedway Bell's: Black Note Friday, Third Coast both days if you've never had it and like big malty BWs Boneyard: RPM/Hop Venom/arguably Notorious Brekeriet: Their berliners are usually quite solid Brew By Numbers: Anything that sounds appealing to you, underrated brewery imo. The Pohjala collab is probably excellent on Saturday. Brewski: Their berliners are also good, I remember liking 50 States at Shelton De Molen: Anything stout-related is probably extremely viscous and good. Kees: Imperial Stout 1850 is pretty drat solid, not sure about the rest of their stuff but probably worth giving a few tries based on 1850. Buxton: Mostly good, though I'm sure you're familiar with them. Obviously the Omnipollo collabs are interesting. Cellarmaker: Great IPAs, overlooked now that Monkish is around, worth trying still. Cigar City: Life is Like Friday, Hunahpu Saturday Cloudwater: All their IPAs, obviously Dieu Du Ciel: Basically everything is worth trying as a curiosity, and BB Peche Mortel used to be a megawhale. Tilquin: Basically everything, though you can probably pass on the stout. Hair of the Dog: Anything Fred or Adam is probably worth a shot. Wakefield: All the Berliners and Goses, none of the stouts, unless you like pure diabetes sugarwater. Jester King: Detritivore, arguably O&P, Snorkel Lervig: Probably worth trying everything interesting sounding. Mikkeller/SD: Maple Vanilla Shake probably worth trying, everything I've had from Mikkeller SD was worth a shot Modern Times: All of their stuff is solid, some is excellent. Fair State is a brewery my friend said was excellent when he visited. Other Half: All of the IPAs taste the same, they're all pretty good, none as good as the Cloudwaters imo. Pohjala: Really cool, underrated Estonian brewery. Try all their stuff imo. SARA: Everything, multiple times. Side Project: Three Candles is probably the most highly coveted beer at the whole festival. Blackberry BdP, Fuzzy, etc. Siren: Started by former goon Ryan, I really love these guys. I'd try everything they have, personally. The Kernel: Another highly regarded UK brewery, though most of what I've had was good, not excellent. To Ol: Obviously you have to try that YOLO stout Lost Abbey: Veritas, DDG, BB Serpents, Deliverance Thornbridge: Usually pretty good, try their stuff if you're near the table and have an empty glass. Trillium: Everyone will rush for the IPAs, but their sours have been usually good in my experiences. A few breweries in there I have no experience with, or not enough positive experiences to recommend, but every brewery I listed is worth trying IMHO.
