I haven't played that many runs yet (though did get a couple wins), so far I just look for a gimmick in char creation and try to support it, and then look over the more expensive skills to pick one that seems complementary. And from there I'll grab more skills if the enemies are hitting too hard or I need to complete a combo. Generally favoring leveling up existing skills over new skills from that point (if the boost is at least 50% or so from the level increase)

Holding off on skill selection to match gear does sound interesting to pull off(and makes for more strategically tense starts), and is probably a bit easier after unlocking more options such that my char creation can be more generalized boons rather than supporting a specific mechanic and hoping the gear works out.

I pretty much always hit tab to randomize at the start, too. So I get some fun builds.

Path of Achra is really interesting, I find the extremely limited design space fascinating, but I am sort of mystified by it all.

What helps/hurts is that it actively spurns a lot of standard fantasy settings/tropes so coming into it fresh you're overwhelmed by all the bizarre monsters and the unusual setting. It takes a while to acclimatize to its "language". There's four sets of enemies, a set of bosses unique to each Tower, the King of Many Colors is the final boss of the Path but has variations. Learning which Astral enemies to watch out (gently caress Kolecs) for is fundamentally no different than realizing caustic shrikes are n a s t y.

It's kinda like Astronarch's, which we were talking about a bunch in this thread last year, weirdness and off-kilterness but turned up to 11. I really appreciate the unique setting and flavor a lot.

I follow a bunch of people making weird fantasy games on twitter because I'm sick of generic western fantasy and it's how I came across Achra originally.

I always said that I like Dominions because the real world religion/culture/mythology inspiration of the game makes it more original than stale western fantasy.
Which is very ironic, if you think about it.

this build feels like it shouldn't have worked because like 3 or 4 times throughout the run it dumped me right next to an enemy that instantly shredded through 2 layers of divine protection. i don't know if i just got lucky enough that that never happened often enough to actually kill me but i'll take it.

I just lost one of the best runs I've had because the room lit up like it was clear and then I hit tab to go to the next floor and an enemy hit me and I died.

The room was clear. THE ROOM WAS loving CLEAR YOU CHEATING PIECE OF poo poo. I would have never hit tab if the room wasn't clear.

HA! HA! NICE! WHAT A TOOL!
It appears to have in-run passive upgrades which makes it very different from Dead cells where you only swap equipment and pick up scrolls (raw damage boosts for a color). I love collecting upgrades/a unique build and it's always been the thing that makes Dead Cells not my game.

Pretty much this, it has the build making of Warm Snow or Hades etc, which feels very different to play over a run vs. Dead Cells where you assemble a build from the 32489234 items on the way and incrementally improve your power from scrolls until you die to a cursed chest

Combat and movement both feel very smooth too, it's fun to play, and for a launch game, good variety of weapons and mechs + the various upgrades to mix up your runs. Bosses are solid too.

I don't like it.

The controls are too unresponsive/imprecise considering what you're expected to do in the game, and the visuals are very noisy to parse in the heat of the moment.
In the later acts, I spent most of my time soaring over and past enemies on platforms I was supposed to hit.

It's a good interpretation of Sonic 3D Blast, though.

After becoming enraged by the Achra lying about a room being cleared, I decided to try building something deliberate instead.

This was the most brain-dead run of this game I think I've had. I don't think I was ever in danger of losing.

Picked up LONESTAR (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2056210/LONESTAR/) on a lark and I've been having a lot of fun with it the last week or so. It's taken me a bit to get the hang of it. While there's a lot of possible combos that you can build off of to scale, there's a ton of available modules treasures and modifications available that can show up and it's really difficult to plan for anything coming along at all; you can only do the best with what you've got at any given time. Finishing the game is easy but getting an ship that can go through the optional 5 endgame power boss battles afterwards has been the real sticking point.

It's cheap, it's fun, and it's a very solid puzzle based roguelike. If you're curious about it, try it out.

Yeah it was hard to tell but it is indeed a roguelike. You clear waves from rooms then get upgrades before moving onto the next one, rinse/repeat, feels a bit like hades in that regard. The combat is fast and fun though, it's very satisfying slamming into enemies sending them off cliffs. Levels are designed with ramps and bumpers and vacuum tubes so there's a good mix of fun traversal stuff from rolling around between bouts of shooting. Definitely digging it.

For Achra, am I right in my understanding that each cycle means you start gaining XP faster? And also maybe that your total XP also makes you gain faster, just it's significantly lowered by your current cycle?

And then, uh, am I also right that for future runs, the scariest thing to encounter will be guys that get more accuracy AND hit per cycle?

Higher cycle means more xp, there’s an overall slowdown in the xp curve after glory 40
