Hell, people don't believe Siemens used to have an office in Staines. It's repeated enough online people think it must be a joke, and they've moved that office now, but you still see references to it on older documents etc sometimes.

STR posted:Eesh. Brokeback's transmission has definitely seen better days. The fluid is looking a bit dark, and it slams into drive when you put it in gear (but only after giving it some gas). I've already changed the external filter, I know I need to do the one inside the pan.. but nobody stocks it locally aside from the dealer. Grabbed a gallon of the finest Carquest ATF, a bottle of Lucas transmission honey, and while I'm at it, some spark plugs (the original part number NGKs it left the factory with), since I have no idea when (or if) they were last changed. The wires look new...ish, but for all I know they could be original. You dont need to replace the internal filter. Its just a fine mesh screen that just needs to be cleaned out with brake cleaner. Do that, the pan and the magnet. I think it has an oring for the pickup so just replace that. I bet it fixes all those problems aside from maybe the flaring because it sounds like the screen is super clogged and its starving for fluid.

They shouldn't restrict it to just one model. Just have it be the Subaru Ultimate Customized Kit Special.

I think it has an oring for the pickup so just replace that. I bet it fixes all those problems aside from maybe the flaring because it sounds like the screen is super clogged and its starving for fluid. Yeah I'm thinking it's clogged to hell. But a kit from Rockauto includes a gasket, screen, and the o-ring, for $15ish. It doesn't have a gasket at the moment, just a fuckton of RTV. I'm already ordering wipers for both my car and GF's (mine has the finest $4 Walmart wipers that could get it through our state inspection; Rockauto always has Bosch wipers for stupid cheap), plus a thermostat for mine, so it shouldn't add much to shipping. Just the fluid change plus the Lucas transmission honey made a night and day difference, so there's a good chance it just had the wrong fluid in it entirely (though I'd think the Lucas would be even harder for it to pull through the screen, it took over 10 minutes for the 24 oz bottle to empty into the dipstick tube, with constant squeezing/watching for overflow/etc....). I know it had an ATF flush :bawl: and cooling system flush right before I got it, at a local quick brake/lube chain (less than 8k ago), and the fluid looked pretty ugly already (at least for the mileage) - it was WAY underfilled when I got it, coolant was also half a gallon low (betting they checked levels with the engine off and cold, and didn't bother burping the cooling system) . It also got new brakes at that time, but the front rotors were beyond hosed when I got it (pads looked new, rotors very possibly original to the car with the massive lip they had). It went from a somewhat sloppy 1 to 2 upshift to downright "throw you back in the seat a little bit", and the 2 to 3 upshift went from "sloppy fifths" to "kinda sloppy seconds" (under light throttle it's pretty firm, under heavy throttle it gets sloppy, but no longer flares). Adding insult to injury, it needed a new RF axle BADLY when I got it (inner boot basically gone, visible metal shavings around it). It still has a nasty shake under throttle; when I swapped rotors, I noticed the LF axle was a very recent Napa axle. I tried moving it to check for play in the joints, and... the dickbeaters didn't install the roll pin. I also tried putting in the FWD fuse, and the shaking basically went from paint shaker to "it's shaking so violently at WOT that I can't see the road clearly, my eyes can't move fast enough". The 2-3 shift is always squishy but 1-2 and 3-4 are awesome with that fluid and clean filters. Mine was the same way, no pan gasket just like 3 different entire tubes of rtv. 15 for the screen, ring and gasket is definitely worth it. At least it has a drain plug so that's nice too. I'm surprised the Lucas made it better unless it had some type of Type F in there which is uh, stickier, than dextron and the Lucas made it slipperier. Putting Type F in a dextron transmission is an old trick to make a failing trans shift slightly better long enough to sell it to the next guy. Trick Shift is basically Type F. Hopefully the right fluid and good filters fix it rather than unleash the demons but if so at least 4eats are cheap and iirc you have access to the pay by hour garage with a lift. That won't happen though, it will shift like new Oh yeah you should have parts of the fsm that cover the timing belt in your mail.

One of the cooler lines also looks really bad, so I'm gonna go ahead and replace both. Hopefully that doesn't lead to a surprise radiator replacement but it has the original radiator, so there's a good chance the plastic barbs might come off with the hoses. I don't really trust a plastic tank radiator that's this old anyway, up until recently it was old enough to buy cigarettes, so I may just go ahead and get a spare one for peace of mind. Thanks for that FSM snippet. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 13:19 on Jan 10, 2020 |
