It's not the bumps at those speeds that cause the worst injuries. It's more the fact that the pavement turns into a giant belt sander at those speeds. But yeah, good on him for staying on the bike despite it not being upright.

He's wearing race leathers. You can safely slide over the asphalt at 200km/h with at worst a few friction burns from the material heating up from friction. It's no big deal, there are some riders who literally make a 'Harumpfh!' gesture while still sliding, after a fall. Those kerb bumps are much more dangerous to the rider. They can cause seams or zippers to rip open, and of course the impact can break bones. Not fun.

I did that on my V65 when I hit some gravel at about seventy miles per hour on I-94 going past West Allis, Wisconsin. Tore up my right highway bar and ground up part of any right boot, but otherwise, I was fine.

Maybe there are some brands that still work the right way, but it was pretty disappointing that you couldn't turn a few bucks of sparklers into something that sets off car alarms. You are correct. There is a specific type a sparkler and you have to wrap them in a much different way than shown in the video. My friend and I made a bunch of them about 20 years ago and they would blow a tree stump out of the ground. The worst part is all those wires inside the sparklers fly in every direction at 3000mph. One of the stupidest things I’ve ever done.

Fun fact: Coaster track flexes to dissipate forces so it's actually the lower half of the pillar that's in the wrong place when the train passes by it.

Ror posted:Isn't rebarred concrete really strong? They make overpasses and stuff out of it. (- me and the guys building those stairs) Yeah reinforced concrete is overkill stronk if used correctly. At small scales and in projects that run on cargo cult engineering logic, it's pretty easy to create a situation where the steel bits contribute no actual support and the concrete just cracks and collapses under its own weight.

The spiral stairs design and construction technique look questionable, but it’s a big hunk of reinforced (even if nonoptimally) concrete that’s going to be holding up itself and one adult human carrying groceries. As long as it’s not cracked, it’s probably fine.

8one6 posted:So am I I wrong or is this not at all well supported internally for what they want to do? IMO that should be fine. Ignoring how the rebar is attached to the central column, the rebar in each step is more than strong enough for stairs. The moulding means each step is basically its own chunk of concrete & rebar, stacked on top of each other, with the central pillar rebar preventing the steps from falling off.
