I got my house in the bust of 2008 and it is exactly where’ everyone wants to be in my town and I stole it. Small but huge Yard and has a workshop.

I still rock a surface pro 2 last one ever made with the later i5 8gb ram and 512 ssd and as long as it doesn’t die I see no need to replace it. I even have the super rare music keyboard attachment.

I honestly think the garrish extra garage should majorly hurt the value of the house. It definitely looks like Grover had a hand in the design work here.

I'm gonna do what my dad did, and build a house with a full daylight basement that can be the garage. But it'll be set up so that part of it can be converted to living space. So I'll have a 1400 sq foot house on a 1400 sq foot garage, that can easily be converted to a 2300 sq foot house with a 500 sq foot garage. Should make it easy to re-sale.

Call me biased, but I want my big garage freestanding anyway. That way if it burns down it doesn't stand much chance of getting my dwelling. Plus, lift height looks weird stuck on the side of a ranch.

Poop, you're right. Last one to use them was the mirrored-door G4, which is hat I had them on.
Pretty machine, that. Last of the plastic Power Macs.

I eventually managed to make a rescue disk with an old laptop HDD thanks to someone on Youtube - which is how I managed to get 10.5 on it. It was still really sluggish overall with 10.5 today, I figured something from the PO was being weird (it also had 3 users setup on it, but I couldn't switch users, because no passwords, and even though I got an admin account created, I couldn't delete the other users). I tried popping a spare SSD into the lower bay and re-running the setup "DVD" (aka laptop HDD with a DVD image), and once I repartitioned the SSD, it installed quickly as a fresh install. It's a totally different machine now. TenFourFox still brings it to its knees on anything ad-heavy, but that's definitely a RAM issue. And you ain't kidding on it being a hot motherfucker - it's several feet away, and there's a noticeable temperature difference near it. This is definitely NOT a machine that I would leave on 24/7 unless I had a monster HVAC unit and a full bank account.

... I used one as a file server for years. My office was comfy in winter.
I don't remember if I ever had two of them in there, but I definitely had two Mac Pros, one a dual-dual Xeon, and the other a newer single 4-core Xeon. Those two put together were probably cooler than the G5.

quote:

From what I turned up on Google, these things are insanely picky about what SSDs they'll work with. I lucked out there; I nabbed a $25 Samsung 840 120GB off of SA-Mart awhile back that it works with.

Yeah, saw that pop-out lock thing while trying to figure out how to open it.

I think that, since I have a pile of older HDDs, I'll probably turn one into a permanent OSX rescue drive. Slapping another HDD in and holding a key down at power up is a lot easier than trying to track down a $$$$$ blank dual layer DVD (and I'm not entirely sure the DVD-ROM it has can even read a dual layer DVD - it's the factory Sony drive, FWIW).

Everymac should be able to tell you which Superdrive it came with - single or dual-layer. It should be in the list somewhere.
I honestly don't remember which it should be myself, offhand.

quote:

Hell, I may just do that with the HDD it came with - it's too small for me to really do anything else with it (250GB Maxtor). I used an old 500GB laptop drive that I normally keep a Windows 10 installer + malware/AV rescue images on (usually lives in a cheap external USB 3.0 housing).

e: so everymac's serial decoder wound up being wrong. Found the original spec under the cover. This thing was ordered with 1GB RAM and a 250GB HDD, so it's never been touched. Also noticed the mfg date on the HDD is Sept 2003. Pulled the RAM, it's plain old Micron DDR-400, nothing special at all. 8 RAM slots, which is nice, but I don't remember DDR being required in pairs (I guess that may be a 64 bit thing? my last OG DDR PC was 32 bit). Also, going by the lack of dust inside, either somebody never really used it, or someone was incredibly OCD about keeping it clean inside, including the fans - the only dust anywhere is on the video card. I tried to pop the HDD into my desktop to see if I could pull hours via SMART data, but it won't even POST with it hooked up (late 2003 Maxtor SATA drive).

Use the machine ID from the System Information to get general specs on the machine. If the serial number is lookup is wrong, it may have been a Build To Order (BTO) machine, and Everymac is just giving you the stock specs, rather than what the custom order upgraded it to.
For that matter, System Information should be able to tell you what the optical drive is, too.
Easy way to find System Info is to select About this Mac from the Apple Menu, then click More Info. that should launch the System Information utility, with a LOT more detailed info on the whole machine.

I think I'd prefer that myself. In the case of the house that Rhyno posted, delete that middle one-car, and raise the roof, possibly widen or lengthen, the second two-car into a shop. Two car attached can be, you know, just a garage for the dailies.

Already did, it's a Sony DW-U10A (4x Superdrive). Noted as "Apple Shipping Drive" in system information. Definitely not capable of burning dual layer, I'm not sure if it can read dual layer (google suggests most can, except for early ones.. and this is a pretty early DVD-RW). Even if it could, I don't think my PC's DVD-RW is a dual layer drive (some kind of ~8 year old LG... I'll see if I can get a model, have to plug the drat thing back in)

And the serial # from the system information utility is what I dropped into Everymac - so yeah, probably a BTO. The sticker inside the case identifies it as 250GB/1GB RAM, seems to be the only differences from what Supermac returns.

edit: I was wrong about the drive in my PC, apparently it does +R DL.

This is what we did and while it does work good next time we're going with a garage for parking the DD's and a completely separate garage for me. Planning on putting a half bath in the unfinished basement garage side in a year or two, will finish it when we go to sell.

This is what we started looking for. Detached garages are rare around here in the price range we were looking. Every drat place with a nice detached had it built with 8-10' ceilings instead of a useful height. I looked into raising one building then we realized we were only buying the place for the garage...the location, house, lot, neighborhood, etc sucked.

Better, sure - and maybe that house is a piece of poo poo, we've seen exactly one picture. But understand that if you build a new shop or addition on a property, in most cases it's going to cost more than it adds to the property value. Maybe a lot more.

Unless you can buy a place at well under market price, there's a lot of value in finding a place with the structure(s) you want, already in place.

Dealership wants to in fact, leave my anus gaping and bleeding. $557.39 to replace the window motor with an oem unit. All the aftermarket ones are apparently crap too. Hopefully I can get one from a local wrecker tomorrow or Tuesday.

So I finally summed up the courage to talk to my wife about my depression. She was great about it, we identified a few triggers and the behaviours that help me pull out of it. I need to learn to accept that how I am when "I'm up and everything is great and I can do everything" is not normal just like "I'm down and everything is wrong and everyone is wrong and nothing feels good". Then my little brother dropped by and we talked therapy and coping mechanisms and trained behaviours, seems he's been doing so well at his therapy his therapist has signed him onto a course to teach it.

Now I just need to change the oil in the Panda, I've been doing it every 6k, I'm now 8k overdue on the current change due to bad brains getting in the way.

Talking feels good, even if it's hard and goes against all learned behaviours.
