The truest words I've ever heard were said to me by a retired army doctor: "The Army produces a lot of outstanding administrators, but very few good leaders."

All the people that I've ever talked to that missed the military, but can't explain why, fall into two categories: they miss the camaraderie, or they miss the easy paycheck. There's nothing quite like either on the outside.

The thing is, unless you truly enjoy being treated like a child, you don't really miss The Army. At some point in your adult life, it should occur to you that having another grown adult very literally screaming in your face, pushing you to physical injury, and threatening your paycheck for smudged shoes or other people's hosed up life choices shouldn't be acceptable. On top of that, the crucible of the war is pretty much gone. The only hardships left to bring people together are all artificial, manufactured specifically for that purpose, or for a bullet point somewhere. Self-interest is the name of the game now.

If you're gone, stay gone; I promise it's not what you remember or want. Peacetime Army is the worst thing you could inflict upon yourself.

A good post.

I'm taking a "personal day" today. Had a physical therapy appointment this morning, after which I went and got coffee. Now I'm escorting a buddy as he gets his wisdom teeth removed. It's looking like I'll have to stay with him the rest of the day, too, at least as far as my leadership is concerned. Not that that really even matters, since I'm within a year of ETSing and I have appointments three days a week my leadership rarely bothers me about anything.

My first duty station was Korea. After my loving cush first accomodations of dragon hill lodge, my slow trip up the peninsula to the turdtastic camp casey was heart breaking.

When I was with 1-72 however, with the loving awesome LTC Stevens in charge, as long as we had done everything we could to make sure all our tanks were up, he pulled a DONSA. Like, nearly every loving week. And if it was a 3 day weekend, he turned it into a 4. One month stands out as we only worked something like 12 days out of the month.

And then our company got transferred to 2-9.

And my rear end in a top hat became infinitely wider.

Whatever, I was in 1-15 FA at Casey/Hovey and they were so worried the cav and infantry would forget who was the gayest of them all, that they invented an artillery spur ride and made us buy these red mesh trucker caps with our secret society nicknames on the back and you drat well you know why it was on the back

Yeah, I mentioned under LTC Stevens for a reason.

Apparently it sucked major rear end before he got there, sucked major rear end after he left.

For 3 months I pretty much just got lucky.

Goes to show that infantry have the real Gay Agenda.

You will find no one to help you here. Beth DuClare has been dissected and placed in cryonic storage.

I read it and was like :stare: the whole time. I didn't even realize that happened while I was in Iraq. Always thought the press was blowing smoke up our asses when they said we were "elite" when we got extended. But gently caress, if that's what we were being compared to, I can see that.

Its a fascinating book. Bravo company collectively lost their loving minds on that deployment.

The very next deployment (the one I went on) they got hit harder than any other company in the battalion.

Karma??
