This may be true for the ST205, I honestly have no idea, but the 165/185 had a completely different floor-pan (and possibly firewall?) from the normal FWD cars, including extra reinforcements in the rear structure. Outwardly they look the same but underneath there are some pretty big differences.

People have tried to convert FWD Celicas to AWD several times, afaik they've all met with dismal failure.

That makes sense, though it would still be cheaper to use a different floor panel for the AWD cars and have the rest of the body be the same. The floor panel is a separate stamping that gets welded to the sides/firewall etc, after all.

This looks amazing. It looks like you could drive it down the street like a totally normal car without it catching on fire or somersaulting or something.

Along those lines, yes. I think the number was 20 or so. From what i remember the series ran in Le-Mans for one year, GT1 class instead of prototypes, and it was deemed too expensive, so they just went back to prototypes because building 20 road cars in order to build 2 race cars isn't really financially feasable.

But it's awesome!

They stopped it becuase the GT1 class cars were literally skirting ALL of the rules and were basically purpose built race cars on "production" chassis. Like, the Porsche 911 GT1 only shared the front subframe with the actual production car. And the Toyota GT-1 didn't even have the required "luggage" compartment. Toyota reasoned that when the fuel tank was empty you could technically fit the "suitcase" in there. I 100% understand the rule bending, but these Manufacturers took it so far they killed the series.

I always got the feeling super strut was something they stuck on the GT4 for techno-fappery reasons and because it made them a consummately more precise and refined road car, rather than for homologation purposes.

NZ has awesome roads if you have a supermotard or automotive equivalent. Not so good if you have something that handles like it's on rails bro.

The double lower front arm multilink suspension is actually in the new M5.

Not essential, and being a 3-stage compound setup i'd bet that pushes 60-80psi MAP. If it needed v-bands it would have them!

It doesn't even look like it's had that much done to it for aerodynamics. I guess a prototype 750bhp 25v engine can do a lot to fight drag and wind resistance! :eng101:

Not surprising though, they're in it to win. If one manufacturer went by the rules, they'd lose to someone else who was bending them and they'd then have the edge. It's like what Smokey Yunick did, he read between the lines and was hugely successful because what he did wasn't technically disallowed.

If you built a race car and could get away with using only the road car's front subframe you wouldn't use the whole chassis from it! Can't blame them for trying. It is a shame they ruined it, just to have built cars that are basically road-going LM cars is awesome.

5-series have has double lower link arms since the E34, or is there something specific about this setup that i'm missing? Are F10s are the first with upper wishbones as opposed to MacPherson struts?

Of course, they are in it to win it and cheating is part of the game. I just dislike how they basically ruined it for the fans/spectators :( Can't complain though as we got some batshit insane road cars from it! :getin:

Yeah they are, though the 7 series was the first saloon model to ditch the mac struts IIRC.

V-bands usally only go on the exhaust side. The best clamps for post turbo intake piping are wiggins clamps, but a good bead roll and a nice constant tension, smooth inner bore worm drive clamp are adequate for wrc cars and heavy duty diesel stuff.
