you should always try any couch for sure

also if you love everything about it except you maybe need a bit more support at the end or back you can always just get a small pillow or two.

I actually don't love them I think they look cold and unwelcoming and also uncomfortable (the arms on a couple are basically knives) but I gladly concede that the first part is just personal preference and I'm wondering how people put aesthetics over comfort to that (Apparent) degree. I just want to try for myself

I'm not sure where the "knives" thing comes from. Which sofa(s) are you referring to?

I sat on a bunch of different DWR sofas, none of them are remotely uncomfortable, it's just most didn't meet my own personal preferences in terms of firmness of cushions, deepness of seating, etc.

I mean I'm obviously doing a bit of internet hyperbole but I'm imagining laying my head on the edge of this:

Obviously, a stack of pillows would work, but that would also seem to negate the whole clean lines minimal thing it has going on, and also either be balanced on the arm or taking up some of the couch real estate

Jan 12, 2003

prada would know more about your question for that sofa probably, but I sat on that yesterday and it was quite comfortable. I didn't put my head on the side just because that seemed a bit ew given the current situation, but I think just having a small accent pillow that you use for that is going to be better. plus it's flexible as it's not a permanent attachment to the sofa. a small pillow or two could work for lieing down, or stretching out with your back against the edge if you're reading or something.

on the product page gallery there are several pictures showing a few small pillows on the sofa that work well. I don't think that somehow means it's not a clean look.

Something designed well doesn't need overstuffed padding. The problem is that cheapening manufacturing ends up with a bunch of bad design pieces, and to compensate they shove it full of light foam, which gives the appearance of 'comfort' (and then wears like poo poo). Then, people think that foam = quality, and you end up with these ugly, bloated-rear end pieces with lovely geometry because it's cheap to produce.

If you imagine how good desk chairs have subtle changes in the geometry which make them much better to sit in, even with none/minimal padding. Now think of how cheap desk chairs rely on overstuffing the rear end, which ends up flattening out with use and its like sitting on a piece of plywood. (Alternately, a good stuffed desk chair uses denser, custom-formed foam, which accomplishes the same thing, but uses more expensive manufacturing.

If you have good design (and manufacturing), you don't need much else because the geometry of the piece normally supports your rear end correctly. The price of "modern" couches comes from the fact that it's expensive to produce, many need to be hand-upholstered which adds significantly to the labor cost as well. This has the further advantage of wearing well over time, since denser padding will sag less and the upholstery gets pulled tighter. There's a few avant-garde pieces that are meant to be more statement pieces (eg, the Bertoia asymmetric chaise), but still sit pretty well because of the consideration to form.

Though you'll still end up with people pissing and moaning about dumb use cases, like how the Eames doesn't recline so you can't sleep in it.

When I was shopping for couches this was the trend that I found the most baffling. There were loving tons of super overstuffed couches that looked like they were made for slug people (half of them had cup-holders built into the arms :suicide:). I wasn't in any way surprised that people like hideously ugly poo poo, but even with the stupid amount of padding every single one of them was uncomfortable to sit on.

I went to blu dot today. I think I'll pass on the bank sofa, the cushions are very much not firm so you sink a decent amount, which I expected but wanted to try for myself. As for the mono I think the back isn't tall enough.

They did have a small version of the right on rug in the color mix I wanted though and I liked it! The red was a bit darker than I wanted but otherwise this might be THE rug. Also it would match well with the maharam surf color. Speaking of which, I was told that blu dot will be offering furniture in this maharam fabrics soon (they have three colors, surf, shell, and machine).

I also found what might be a good credenza/storage turntable option, this dang two door / two drawer console which was discounted to 1299 without any major damage.

While I'd rather not have the two drawers in the middle, what I didn't realize is that not only do both sides have adjustable shelves, but there are cord openings both behind each shelf AND between shelves, AND there is an opening to the center back, which has an opening behind it. Also the drawers don't go all the way to the back, which means there is a space there for a power strip and room to run all your cables into it from any other location, and then just have one cord going out the back at the end:

Also I'll need to test this, but there should be room for records to fit underneath the shelf and to put the receiver on top of the shelf, which can be controlled then with the door closed due to the openings in the top part.

For DWR, I'm considering the outline or the theatre sofa in surf, which is a gray with a bit of blue in it. What I like about this is that it it would work well with a rug with some blue in it, and I like a bit of blue anyway. I have a sample of it as well.

Note that the first two sofas are in the same color, despite looking quite different!! I'd say the second is more similar to the actual color.

outline sofa in surf

theatre sofa in surf - about 1k cheaper than the outline currently. I could also get chrome legs but I prefer the black.

blu dot bank sofa in vern gray - a bit cheaper than the theatre. I like how it has the linear form of the theatre, but the leg style is more similar to the outline.

and here's the rug I ordered a sample of, which I think will be noticeable but not TOO out there. Something I won't regret later.

I've recently started reading this thread because I have nothing else to do due to the pandy. I thought I should share my living space. I've been living in a rent controlled apartment in a major city for a few years now and it's old and lovely (they removed the carpet and painted the hardwood with house paint in a terrible brown) but the location and price can't be beat. I know it looks cramped and that's because there are 4 spaces for the cat (her tipi, cat tree, food area and the cat-shaped scratcher), whenever I had people over I'd move her stuff to the bedroom and it definitely gives the room more space to breathe, but I love her so she gets everything she wants.

There's a couple places where I want to add art by the couch but I just need to stop being lazy and get stuff framed.

I have this 80s capsule shaped pendulum wall clock that is pretty corny, but I love. It was missing the pendulum when I bought it, so with some grim determination and sanding/free time in quarantine, I whittled a new one out of scrap wood and covered it with the best toothbrush speckled paint finish I could manage.

Based on my research, these usually came with an off the shelf brass pendulum either unfinished brass or speckle painted, but I think the color and lines of both those clash somewhat with the body of the clock, because the clock has no other exposed metal and the stock pendulum is more of a saucer shape than a beveled disc.

Anyway, I just eyeballed the length of the pendulum initially, but I think this might be too long. Thoughts? Is the second length better? I photoshopped it and raised the pendulum a few inches, so the clear distance above the clock face and clear distance below the pendulum are the same.

Have you checked that the length of the pendulum does not matter for the speed of the clock? Keep in mind that the period of a pendulum is determined almost entirely by its length.
