Let's say in this timeline, due to the war, Saudi Arabia received a larger than irl influx of western oil investments in the late 30's, and the results were a bit more successful. Then the Saudis started trying to fully nationalize and take over the western assets (with German/Italian backing and bribery) from Aramco and BP in '40 and '41. The west is going to tolerate none of that during a war.

The two attacking bombers attack initally with 3 air-to-sea factor each. Due to the weather, their attack values are halved, it leaves 1 from each. The Allies have 1 AA factor from 15 ships -(2 ASW units + 5 oil tankers/21 convoys) There is not enough AA factors to turn away the attacking units.

The Axis initial attack result is 1 damaged and 1 abort. The Axis spend their six surprise points to increase their attack reusult to 1 sunk, 1 damaged, and 1 abort.

The Axis attack 2 American convoys for the sunk result. The convoys are sunk

The Allies apply the damaged result to the Canadian ASW unit. Her defense value is 9. The d10 roll is 2. She is damaged and remains at sea.

The lowest one of three d10 rolls are the number of attacking bombing factors turned away. The d10 rolls are 1, 1, and 5. 1 attacking air-to-sea factor is turned away.

The initial Allies attack result is 1 sunk and 2 damaged. The Allies spend 6 surprise points to increase the attack result to 2 sunk, 2 damaged, and 3 aborts.

The Allies attack the Yamato for the first sunk result. Her defense value is 0. The defense roll is automatically successful. She is damaged and remains at sea.

The Allies spend their 3 remaining surprise points to apply the second sunk result to the previously damaged Yamato. She will sink.

Japan is attacking with a total of 5 (3 from the infantry, 2 from the marine unit). The defending unit is a notional unit with a value of 1.

Commonwealth flies the Australian Beaufort unit in for 1 point of ground support. Japan flies the carrier plane unit from the Zuiho in the Coral Sea to intercept the unit. In the air combat, Japan is at +2, the Commonwealth at -2. The Allies 2d10 roll is 10, which has no effect. The Axis 2d10 roll is 14, which aborts the Commonwealth bomber unit.

Japan is attacking with a combat ratio of 5:1. The initial combat modifier is +10. That is reduced to +9 due to the hex being a city. There are no additional modifiers.

Commonwealth defends on the assault table. The 2d10 combat roll is 8, increased to 17. The result is 1/1. The invasion is successful. Japan loses 1 unit. The attacking infantry unit is destroyed. The Axis search roll is 9. The Allies search roll is 2. Only the Allies are successful with all of their units. The Allies will attack the Axis units in the 2 box. The Allies will have (4+9) (2+2) 9 surprise points.

The combat is a naval air combat. Only the Allies have aircraft included. The Allies have the carrier plane unit flying as a bomber, and two naval bomber units attacking. The Allies initially have 9 air-to-sea factors from 3 bombers. The Axis have 11 AA factors from 7 ships.

Ouch, the IJN is getting mauled even more than historical. The rolls have not been lucky for all the Axis navies actually.

Will we see some production shifts to compensate?

Much as I love the spectacle of sinking the Yamato (and it is truly fabulous spectacle) it wasn't a critical strategic piece. Sinking any IJN carrier would have been a more valuable accomplishment

They just successfully invaded mainland Australia without needing its big guns for bombardment, allied shipping is getting mauled very well and the USSR stands a solid chance of falling before the end of '42; the war is a long way from over

True, but these draws and non-carrier defeats have been going on for a while now, with only a few exceptions. If it wasn't for the Pearl result the IJN would be in deep trouble, and in another ten-twelve months all those carriers will have been rebuilt.

It would've been almost even if the turn had ended and resources had been lost, except the Axis need major naval victories, but as those convoys will be replaced the damage bill is about 5/14 I think (7 for Yamato IIRC, 3 for one German Pilot, 3 IP for the Condor fighter-bomber, 1 IP for repairing the Kinugasa, versus 4 convoys and 1 IP for repairing the ASW)

A double exchange is acceptable for the combined Axis navies. 14/5 is a major disaster, those screens, battleships, and pilots don't grow on trees like they do in America.
The immediate effect is even worse, losing warships over convoys.

Yeah, its a blow but it isn't like losing the Yamato means japan loses 7 IP, they just aren't going to replace it. They lose having a big gun platform but that's worth a lot less than just about any other way Japan could spend 7 IP

Besides, the resource swing of knocking out the USSR will be dozens per turn every turn, and knocking out Australia will go a long way if they manage that too

America will definitely have to knock out Japan entirely if Germany takes out the USSR and strangle Italy's factories so its just German units.

The Yamato was valuable as more than 11/4/4 surface/AA/bombardment factors though, it was also an armor platform for soaking up 2 aborts or 1 damage at the end of a turn without consequence and even standing in to save lesser battleships from a sinking. We had to spend 2 sinkings and 3 surprise points just to ensure it would go away. (3 sinkings, 1 damage and 3 surprise points including the first time it got damaged)

I think Australia will be fine. The Japanese just landed, losing one unit (another 3 IP, for 5-17 this round, plus Australia getd 1 more IP, for 4-17) against a notional defender. They've occupied Brisbane, but they're just sitting there with 2 points. Response will probably be swift and strong. It'd have been worse if Japan had gotten a double turn.

anything that's not really a major naval victory is a long-term loss for the Axis, they just are not going to be able to replace their losses with what the Allies can (excluding the USSR)

Tito is just fine for now holding in Belgrade, he may get moved in a bit.

the US is barely throwing anything at the German and Italian navies right now. The Royal Navy is doing a pretty good job at holding their supply routes. Almost all of the American naval power is being sent against Japan.

sounds like your advocating an early application of Operation Downfall.

The US spent their big advantage to sink that bastard, hopefully they don't have to see her again. It's still going to be at least another year before the Musashi is completed.

Australia should be fine, agreed. It's going to be difficult for Japan to get more support there for that marine unit. The Commonwealth can build Australian territorial units and militia that would appear immediately to hold off Japan.

So why exactly did Glorious Nippon seek action in the Marshalls to begin with? It seems like their fleet was scattered across multiple zones, vulnerable to defeat in detail, and with key units lacking any kind of air support. Is there some sort of hidden gimmick in the combat system that could have done as much damage to the Americans if the dice results had somehow been swapped?

If they'd been the ones to get a ton of surprise points like that they could have made the combat a surface combat and ignored the planes

I think they're trying to save oil and orders, and keep a reserve, by not placing out all their units (the US does so as well to a lesser degree, by virtue of having less carriers atm., both sides seem to be going for par by choosing combined impulses and using the remaining orders to shuttle troops around and attack China/Vladivostok/Australia and the Middle East respectively).
There was some air cover (I spot a Nell there), but the Japanese roll was bad enough the Allies managed to avoid it (guess the Nell was from an island because I don't think we'd ignore carriers, unless there were a lot more of them).

But yeah, bad luck.

will_colorado posted:

My impression is that a lot of a major power's strength is their access to units (which does a good job of representing manpower). If the USSR falls we'll need to find some way to keep the Axis from ballooning out of control. The Italian factories due to their vicinity to our bombers and Japanese sea lanes (and eventually main isles) due to their isolation from their allies do seem to be the clear weak points.

There is snow in the Arctic and North Temperate areas; rain in the Mediterranean area; storm in the South Monsoon area; clear weather in the North Monsoon and South Temperate areas.

No port attacks are made.

Naval air missions:
-Commonwealth flies the naval bomber units to the Bay of Biscay:

Naval movement:
-Commonwealth moves ships from Halifax and Edinburgh to the North Atlantic:

-Commonwealth moves the carrier Indomitable to the Bay of Biscay:

-Commonwealth moves 1 convoy to the Western Mediterranean:

-Commonwealth returns the transport in the Western Mediterranean to base in Syria:

Italy does not attempt to intercept the unit.

-Commonwealth moves the transport carrying the Canadian Hurricane unit to the Western Mediterranean:

-Commonwealth moves 1 convoy down the convoy chain to the SE Indian Ocean:

-Commonwealth moves 3 convoys to the Bay of Biscay:

-Commonwealth transport the Canadian garrison unit to Newcastle on the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth ocean liners:

Naval combat:
-Commonwealth flips the Galatea face down to search for the Axis units in the Bay of Biscay:

The Axis will not include the subs in the combat. Due to the weather, the search roll receives a +1. The Allies search roll 8 increased to 9. The Axis search roll is 5 increased to 6. Neither side finds the other.

-Commonwealth flips the Fiji face down to search for the Axis units in the North Atlantic:

Due to the weather, the search roll receives a +1. The Axis will include the subs in the combat. The Allies search roll is 1 increased to 2. The Axis search roll is 1 increased to 2. Both sides find the other with their units in the 2 box and higher. Neither side will have an advantage in surprise points (1+3) (1+3).

The combat is a surface combat. The Allies have 24 surface factors with 14 ships. The Axis have 72 surface factors with 21 ships.

The Allies initial attack result is 1 sunk, 2 damaged, and 1 abort. The Axis initial attack result is 3 sunk, 1 damaged, 1 abort.

The Axis apply the first sunk result to the Konigsberg. Her defense value is 8. The defense roll is 8. She is sunk.

The Axis apply the damaged result to a sub unit. Her defense value is 7. The defense roll is 4. She is damaged and remains at sea.

The Axis apply the second damaged result to another sub unit. Her defense value is 8. The d10 roll is 8. She is damaged and remains at sea.

The Axis apply the abort result to a sub unit. Her defense value is 6. The defense roll is 9. She remains at sea.

The Allies apply the first sunk result to the Belgian ship Artevelde. Her defense value is 8. The defense roll is 2. She is sunk.

The Allies apply the second sunk result to the Curacoa. Her defense value is 8. The d10 roll is 8. She is sunk.

The Allies apply the last sunk result to the Colombo. Her defense value is 8. The defense roll is 7. She is sunk.

The Allies apply the damaged result to the Hawkins. Her defense value is 7. The d10 roll is 5. She is damaged and remains at sea.

The Allies apply the abort result to the Danae. Her defense value is 8. The defense roll is 10. She remains at sea.

Each side remains in the sea zone. The Allies search roll is 5, increased to 6. The Axis search roll is 8, increased to 9. Neither side finds the other.

-Commonwealth flips the Renown face down to search for the Axis ships in the Eastern Mediterranean:

Due to the weather, the search roll recieves a +1. The Allies search roll is 3, increased to 4. The Axis search roll is 2, increased to 3. Both sides find the other with all of their units. (the Allies are successful with all of their units, not just the 4 box due to the 3 box having a naval bomber unit) The Allies will have (2+4) (2+3) 1 surprise point; that cannot change the combat result.

The combat is a naval air combat. Only the Allies have an available aircraft unit. The Allies have 1 air-to-sea factor from 1 bomber. (the rain halves the attacking air-to-sea factors)

The Axis have 14 AA factors from 12 ships. The lowest one of three d10 rolls are the number of AA factors turned away. The d10 rolls are 10, 3, and 4. The attacking air-to-sea factor is turned away.

Each side remains in the sea zone. The Allies search roll is 6 increased to 7. The Axis search roll is 3 increased to 4. Neither side finds the other.

No strategic bombing or carpet bombing missions are done.

No rail movement is done.

No land movement occurs.

No air transport is done.

No units are debarked from a sea zone.

No amphibious invasions are made.

No paradrops are done.

No land combat occurs.

No aircraft rebases are made.
