Russian oligarchs have been laundering money through videogame transactions for years because normal channels are closed to them. Star Citizen's grey market is just one such source and this isn't even the fourth or fifth time that something like this has happened in the ship trading community. It's pretty much the #1 expected result if you go in there and trade without some sort of trusted third party. If we had any journalists left in the world it would make an interesting story, but alas.

we did have a blowup recently with valve (and a few years back there was a couple other blowups with other companies, including blizzard), but unfortunately star citizen is small potatoes

As best I can tell it's specifically not about huge amounts of money changing hands at once. It's about thousands and thousands of tiny little transactions instead, with multiple parties in obscure back-channels like Steam or Reddit where there is little or no book keeping or historical memory. The two big things to look out for are consistency of prices around the assets being traded and a solid base of activity outside of any laundering operation. This steady stream of income is just one of many sources for a really dedicated launderer, no doubt. Even better if you just own the studio- now you've got a lootbox printing machine.

But all of this is what makes me question whether Star Citizen has ever been involved in it, despite being shady as poo poo. Star Citizen's got wildly overpriced and inconsistently valued assets, and is increasingly obscure among the general public. I don't doubt that there's a few dozen idiots still buying spaceships, but anyone sitting on tens of thousands in digital jpegs now is risking becoming a bag-holder in very short order. I suppose that might be why more high-profile activity like the bi-directional paypal/account claim scamming is going on- no point playing within the market if there is no market, so just smash and grab.

Ok wow, I guess I haven't watched SC gameplay in a while so this video was new to me.

Hot drat but does that look bad...

My favorite parts from just skimming the video:

The ships still just no-clipping around without any kind of weight. Strafe, go backwards, whatever it's not like you're in an atmosphere or anything.
The dude firing a rail gun (that takes up 1/3 the screen) and absolutely no projectile or anything visible coming out of the gun.
People driving ground vehicles- why? They seem to die so fast- why even ride in one? You're just a bigger target.
And lastly- the look of complete boredom/apathy from the guy on the stage. Why even have him on screen in picture in picture?
