TheAgent posted:its also really shady that the current top buyers on starcitizen_trades are all new reddit accounts (six months or less) with almost zero posting history or random posting history with nothing to do with Star Citizen, are placing huge orders (sometimes for a few thousand dollars a week) and their usernames follow the same pattern Russian oligarchs have been laundering money through videogame transactions for years because normal channels are closed to them. Star Citizen's grey market is just one such source and this isn't even the fourth or fifth time that something like this has happened in the ship trading community. It's pretty much the #1 expected result if you go in there and trade without some sort of trusted third party. If we had any journalists left in the world it would make an interesting story, but alas.

trucutru posted:But what kind of game can handle enough money to be suitable enough for an oligarch? As best I can tell it's specifically not about huge amounts of money changing hands at once. It's about thousands and thousands of tiny little transactions instead, with multiple parties in obscure back-channels like Steam or Reddit where there is little or no book keeping or historical memory. The two big things to look out for are consistency of prices around the assets being traded and a solid base of activity outside of any laundering operation. This steady stream of income is just one of many sources for a really dedicated launderer, no doubt. Even better if you just own the studio- now you've got a lootbox printing machine. But all of this is what makes me question whether Star Citizen has ever been involved in it, despite being shady as poo poo. Star Citizen's got wildly overpriced and inconsistently valued assets, and is increasingly obscure among the general public. I don't doubt that there's a few dozen idiots still buying spaceships, but anyone sitting on tens of thousands in digital jpegs now is risking becoming a bag-holder in very short order. I suppose that might be why more high-profile activity like the bi-directional paypal/account claim scamming is going on- no point playing within the market if there is no market, so just smash and grab.

I can't believe Citizens are totally blindsided by this survival element. Chris has been obsessively focusing on food and food-adjacent art assets for like five years now. Do they not remember? * Cafeteria scene mocap and reshoots being focused on for like, a year * Procedural food graphics * Every big ship having a sit-down mess hall * Food courts in all stations * Big Benny's take-out boxes and vending machines being literally everywhere * A year's worth of bartender A.I. updates * Every spaceship coming with toilets and kitchens I mean, what did you think- that he was just wasting time and millions of dollars on pointless frippery around the edges of the game he was supposed to be making? No, you loving idiots, you absolute buffoons- he was setting up the whole time for the greatest eating/drinking simulator known to man.

Every once in a while Chris will catch an ad on TV for Star Trek: Picard or the newest season if the Expanse and he'll briefly have the strangest feeling that he's forgetting something, before he turns back to his life's work of perfectly simulating a spicy curry dish in the only medium perfectly devoid of touch, taste, and smell.

I've got gaming paralysis at the moment. I've 203 games on Steam, a couple on Uplay, some on Origin, and a bunch just kicking around on my SSD, and I can't be arsed to play any of them. I'd just rather watch let's plays. I mean, I might fire up Silent Hunter 5: Wolves of Steel mod for a bit, but the joy of a real time patrol with celestial navigation is long gone. Just give me max time compression and an auto TDC solution and I'm good thanks Herr Kaleun. Be that as it may, I'm still not reinstalling Star Citizen, despite how good it now is according to Reddit.

Take a break, enjoy another hobby, stop buying games for a while. Be ok with your backlog and accept you won't play or finish all those games. Eventually something else will come out, or an old game will strike your fancy, and you'll play for a while again.
