Yeah. lol goons are always telling people to go play Bully so I watched some videos and it looks completely unplayable in tyool 2019. I trust it was cool when it came out but I'm not playing that.

Bully rules and is better than GTA4

I tried playing Bully pretty late in the PS2 lifecycle and it was already trash by then. It was basically like playing GTA3 but without the ability to drive, not a terrible experience per se but still pretty bad and annoying.

Goons love Bully because it lets them live out their middle school revenge fantasies

I think goons love bully because it came out around GTA IV and was way better about letting you do open world fuckery and way less dour. Now that Saints Row is a thing that doesn’t stand out as much.

I don't think so; Bully came out several years earlier, it was PS2 whereas GTA4 was PS3

The Houser brothers have literally based every single Rockstar game on some hastily scribbled notes taken while drunkenly watching Scarface and the Good, the Bad and The Ugly.

drat shame about the egregiously long pitch tone maze.

On the other hand if you know what youre doing you can beat the game in like a minute because the final puzzle is always doable at any time, you just dont know its a puzzle your first time through.

As evidenced by the speedruns posted:

The final puzzle is actually on the main island, you just need to know of its existence and the pattern to plug in by exploring all the other worlds first. The run shows him running about the island to turn on all the switches of a certain type, then run back and turn off the first one, revealing a hidden compartment with a white page. You then goto a hidden compartment in a fireplace and punch in a pattern that you had no way of randomly guessing, take the one-way teleport and hand the page to the guy to get the good ending.

myst is really good and very solvable and has very little 90s adventure game logic nonsense in it. i don't think it's really even possible to die.

riven on the other hand is the most obtuse fuckin' thing, drat it. i've heard that it all has an insanely strong internal logic and stuff but it has just never coalesced for me

Riding the cable cars was by far the most fun and interesting thing I experienced in that game. :v:

Now years later the rides aren't as impressive and the gameplay is even more boring and uninteresting than as a dumb kid. I'll take insult swordfighting and swampling stew over that any day.

The puzzle at the end of riven is so annoying that it's probably good that people just rode around the cable cars instead of playing it. The one where you have to learn the number system and use the reflections was fun though.

Let's talk about where you're going.
The final Riven puzzle with the colored marbles in a 3d map of the island is probably one of, if not the, hardest game puzzles that isn't moon-logic based. I know how to solve it and I still gently caress it up on replays.

It's a bland, undynamic if inoffensive FPS that's positive attributes (namely an interesting aesthetic) are more than washed out by its bloated, up it's own rear end story and a terrible companion mechanic that is literally invincible and throws you ammo and health when you need them and money when you don't.

There's a lot to criticize Bio:Inf about, but the VIP escort mechanics is one of the few things it did unambiguously well and other games would do well to imitate.

Nobody likes escort missions where the civilian runs around getting themselves killed. So good games have figured that out, and either have them largely-invulnerable, armed with a peashooter, and cross eyed, or have them sit in the room behind you as you have fun then they pop out and give dialogue once things are clear. Bio:Inf took it a step further and had the VIP stay in the same room as the firefight, invulnerable but not obnoxiously so (she cowers/runs away and enemies target you over her). And then she chucks you a finite, non-exploitable amount of ammo for the weapon you're using most. Balance-wise, this is identical to having the VIP sit in the previous room and just spawning 2 extra ammo drops on enemy corpses - but its been rejigged and so you feel you have a sidekick who's being actively useful.

And then they wrapped it in the poo poo crêpe we all know and love. As an aside, I never figured out that they wanted me to fight on the skyhooks; I'd just hear the enemies, find a platform to hop off on and stand there in the open gunning away. Yay.

i'm really sick of any game that tries to be preachy about its main mechanics. oh boy, are you telling me that violence is actually wrong and i shouldn't solve my problems with guns and grenades? who could have possibly imagined that? it's such a low-hanging-fruit plot point to try to make a game appear ~deep~ but video game writing is dire at the best of times without trying to tack on a bad morality play to everything
