The Sony 4K players have two knocks - one is that they don’t auto switch to Dolby Vision when it’s available, and the other is that they have an infamously bad failure rate. They used to be the Wirecutter recommendation but were removed because there were so many complaints about the unit failing. But if you roll the dice and get a good one you can’t beat the price.

Since this just came up in the TV thread:

so I went through this process yesterday and put on Heat (a famously dark UHD disc) and the movie wasnt that dark! It was the lousy auto-dim the tv was doing that kept changing from scene to scene depending on how long the shot stayed in the dark and then went into the light.

I highly recommended spending the $6 to turn off these two features and be done with it. its pretty great.

Yeah this is a must fix. It was comical during Heat. But also Heat is still too dark! Another BD-66 too, unfortunately. I wish studios could treat their marquee films as well as Kino Lorber treats loving Kindergarten Cop or whatever.

My Sony 700 player is a pain in the rear end. Manually switching DV on and off isn't a problem, but so many of my movies will freeze up at certain points it's become increasingly annoying. Eventually I'll switch it out for a Phillips.

I've heard people say this problem has been fixed with updates but I've tried both factory resetting my player (and leaving it offline) and keeping it updated constantly. Still having the issue with it.

Technically, a 2 1/2 hour film like Once Upon a Time in the West could plausibly work on a BD-66 in 4K because it's 2.35:1 and only the film on the disc, but you're talking about the absolute minimum space and it would require Arrow/Indicator level encoding.

Meanwhile, I just took a look at a Kino Classics Blu of Ernst Lubitsch's Anna Boleyn, a 1920 silent - no extras, not even a commentary, but it's a BD-50 with the 123 minute film taking up 37 GB, with an avg. bitrate of 35mbps. They could have made it work on a BD-25 without a huge difference, but they didn't.

It’s not blu-ray, but I really can’t tell y’all how happy I am to have a Dexter’s Lab complete series set in my hands right now. It’s missing two episodes and I don’t care about the non-Tartakovsky seasons, but it’s all in glorious 4:3 and it includes Ego Trip.

“Dexter’s Rude Removal” isn’t included, but it was really only ever something Tartakovsky showed off at conventions, so that’s not surprising. It was meant for season 2, but iirc Cartoon Network got cold feet over all the implied swearing the characters do in the segment and pulled it before airing. It’s never been in a real release but it’s easy to find online.

“Barbequor” is a Dial M for Monkey segment that’s also not included, but that’s because right after it originally aired they were hit with a copyright infringement threat by Marvel over a character that’s basically the Silver Surfer. It did make it onto a region 4 release years ago, but since the character is also kind of a gay stereotype it’s not that surprising that it’s still been left out.

Picked up the Columbo set and my god, this show is just so well made. The scores, the creative editing, the scripts, the friggin’ sets and of course the acting. This has been a very rewarding experience. I’ll say the old giant DVD set looked pretty drat good too, and can be bought for a song these days so if you’ve never seen the show it’s a decent blind buy! Falk talk.

I had never seen Columbo before, and while watching the first episode, I was like, wow this show looks great. Credits roll, and I was stunned to see directed by Steven Spielberg.

On TV/player talk, that dimming thing is real annoying! I noticed it happening while watching YouTube videos and I was like wtf is going on. Didn't realize it was some dumb "feature" that I apparently need to spend tenbux to fix?

My Sony player, that is up to date as of last Saturday or so, still freezes when playing 4Ks. Doesn't really help my argument that physical media is superior to streaming since it doesn't have to care about internet connection when the damned physical media stalls randomly on its own.

There's a full set coming out in September

Seems a bit expensive though, maybe it'll come down a few bucks by the time the release date gets here.

La Femme Object was my last shot, but it too was bad. The first 45 minutes are just a bearded Frenchman loving! Then he gets the idea to build a sex robot, smash cut to the sex robot having been built. The plot from then on is actually pretty good. It could have made a great boner comedy. But instead it's just a porno. And that's the last of the porno movies I got. What a loving waste that was. I thought they would be movies that just had sex scenes in them, but instead they're just old pornos where none of the guys shave.

I do still have the All Night at the Bizarre Art Theater and All Night at the Po-No, but those really are weird interesting microbudget oddities, right? Not just more pornos?
