Directed by: Richard Attenborough Starring: Ben Kingsley, Candice Bergen As you may expect from the title, Gandhi is about the lawyer-turned-spiritual-revolutionary Mohandas Gandhi. This movie goes deeper than what you read about in history books though, as it shows Gandhi the strategist, Gandhi the mentor, and even Gandhi the family man. In terms of visuals, Gandhi is epic but realistic. One example is a particular scene at Gandhi's funeral which used hundreds of thousands of extras. Also, part of Gandhi's (the person not the movie) charm, was that he was never boastful or arrogant about his victory over Britain. He embodied humility and peace, and Ben Kingsley does an excellent job of portraying the humble Gandhi. To make a brief background, Gandhi was a lawyer in South Africa who decided to go back to India when he feels that the British are treating the Indians like subhumans. His novel approach of non-violence and passive resistance eventually wins India's independence and gives a defeat to the world superpower of Great Britain. After India wins independence, Gandhi attempts to tackle the ever-widening chasm of religious intolerance between the Hindus and Muslims, but eventually he is shot and killed by a Hindu. This is one of the few dramas that kept me interested the entire way through, even though I already knew what would happen at the end. At three hours, this is an impressive feat. I highly recommend this movie. 5/5
