Based on the novel of the same name, Touching the Void is a story about two climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, who are the only two men to climb the west face of the Siula Grande in Peru. This film tells the story of their incredible climb, and also their treachorous descent. No spoiler here: Both men lived to tell the tale.

What's even more incredible was some hotshot director had the balls to take two climber/actors for a little trip to the Siula Grande and try to recapture their experience on the mountain.

I live with a couple climbers, but I'll be honest, I know next to nothing about climbing. I've been once or twice on a dry face, and it was fun, but I still dont know anything. But as I watched this movie, I knew exactly what was going on. I was inside the minds of these guys as they died, slowly on the side of that white peak. I spent half the film trying to figure out how they got the shots they did, how they reinacted such brutal and terrifying elements.

As I said, I know nothing about climbing and I spent most of this film scared shitless. If there was ever such thing as a white knuckle documentary, this is it. It's a documentary for people who love survival stories, and a film for those who desire truley spectacular cinema.

Amazing story. It's not one of the best documentaries that I've ever seen, but it's definitely one of the best stories I've ever heard. 4.5

Made me simultaneously want to climb crazy mountains/move to Iowa and never leave. Certainly a beautiful and chilling documentary.
