Directed by: Mike Judge & Don Hertzfeldt
Starring: cartoons?

The Animation Show is a collection of animated shorts which were assembled by Don Hertzfeldt (of Rejected fame) and Mike Judge (Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill, Office Space). This series was actually launched in-theatres, and is now available on DVD.

The film features a number of different artists and thus a number of different styles - some quirky, some funny, and some just interesting. They vary from stopmotion to claymation to animation, all of varying styles, and do include early works from Mike Judge (including "Milton", from which Office Space was based), as well as Don Hertzfeldt's two best - Rejected and Billy's Balloon. The film is also hosted by a pair of the fishstick characters Hertzfeldt is well-known for. Other recognizable shorts are a Bill Plympton animation about a parking lot attendent trying to keep mother nature down, and a fairly old piece in which Vincent Price reads a poem about a child who is fascinated with...Vincent Price, directed by Tim Burton. Another very enjoyable piece revolves around a couple of rock people who sit idly by and watch the rise and fall of mankind from their resting point.

If you were a fan of Mtv's old Liquid Television, this would be a fine addition to your collection. Even if not, this is a fine example of what independent or short animation SHOULD be, and is sure to provide a great deal of entertainment and a bit of surrealism.

RATING: 5

PROS: excellent variety of animation,
CONS: mostly old material

Really great variety! My favorites were "Billy's Balloon", the Ricardo shorts, "Intermission in the Third Dimension", and "La Course A L'Abime" (very beautiful), and the Aardman short "Ident".

The film I liked the least was "The Cathedral", which seemed like an excuse to show off the filmmaker's CGI skills, whick kinda made it seem empty and hollow to me.

The Vol. 1 DVD is available now, with about 3/4 the stuff from the theatrical show and the additional films Moving Illustrations of Machines (what), the Cousin, Brother, and Uncle trilogy (very cool), Bathtime in Clerkenwell (crazy!), and Aria (undecided on this one). However, it's better watching this on the big screen.

Highly recommended!

The missing shorts seem to include Ident, Mars and Beyond, Rejected, Strange Invaders, Vincent, and The Adventures Of Ricardo.
