iron helps us play
Directed by: Alphonso Cuarón
Starring: Ana López Mercado, Diego Luna, Gael García Bernal

Tenoch (Diego Luna) and Julio (Gael García Bernal) are two typical aimless, horny teenagers in socially polar Mexico. They see their girlfriends off as they leave for Europe, making them promise to remain faithful, but soon their own attention turns to an older woman named Ana (Ana López Mercado). The boys weave a story of a non-existent beach called Heaven's Mouth and Ana, fresh from learning of her husband's infidelity, decides to tag along. The boys are ultimately successful in their quest into her pants, but in the process, find themselves questioning their friendship and their lot in life.

Initially, Y Tu Mamá También comes off as a really bad attempt at a gross-out comedy. The first half hour was filled with such vanilla sex jokes that I was convinced that it wasn't really supposed to be funny. It becomes clearer as the movie goes on that Tenoch and Julio are just kids being kids. They joke about dicks and jerking off because, well, they're teenagers. Later into the journey they become irrationally jealous of one another for boning Ana--even though that was the entire purpose of the trip--for the exact same reason. Teenagers do stupid poo poo sometimes, and sometimes that stupidity can do them irreparable harm.

Alphonso Cuarón successfully captures life as I would imagine it in Mexico. He captures the natural beauty and the social turmoil like they were inextricably linked to one another. He also manages to make the sex scenes that much more goddamn erotic by making the actors perform like real people. The teenies flail around, bite, shake, fall over, grunt and ejaculate prematurely. There's never any soft-lit moments or sensual romps set to the tune of a Kenny G solo. It's rode dry and put away wet.

I can't find fault in any of the performances. Mercado isn't a stunning beauty, but she is quite sexy and boner-inducing in her role. Luna and Bernal are obnoxious and unlikable, but it reflects on their characters and not themselves. They're a couple of egotistical pricks that you can help but feel sad for when their relationships fall apart. The only thing this movie really loses marks is the often-times superfluous narrator. He says a lot of stuff like "Julio hasn't felt this way since..." or "And he'd never fish again..." that would be more effectively left subdued for the audience to figure out for themselves.

Y Tu Mamá También is occasionally funny, sometimes sad and mostly entertaining. Apparently there's a very artful tribute to this movie in the new Cuarón-directed Harry Potter flick. Watch very closely for the scene where Hermione blows both Harry and Ron while they make out with one another.

RATING: 4

PROS: Very well directed, very sloppy, realistic sex
CONS: The narrator is a bit unnecessary

I enjoyed it a lot. It was refreshing to see a film that bases itself in reality also take liberties with its characters and plot. After the dissapointment that was 'Lost in Translation,' it's great to see a film play with relationship issues, sex, and emotions in an entertaining way.

Well filmed, good characters, refreshing.
4.5/5

EDIT: Also, it is a great view into Latin culture for an American.

EDIT 2:  OH poo poo just read the Harry Potter thing

There was something about this film that made me cry a lot at the end, like you wouldn't believe. In fact, I can't watch it without crying. From my point of view, it just seemed like a big love story, but I'm gay so my perspective might be a little different on what happens.

As far as narration goes, I think it adds a little extra depth to the characters and situations that they are in. For example: The "And he'd never fish again..." one makes you realize that the commercialization of mexican beaches, although "good for the economy" you can still see the effect it has on the locals. It just makes it read more like a book with the narrator.

5/5 gently caress crying because I love this movie too much.

An outstanding, oddly wistful film. Mercado is hotter than Satan's underpants and the script and direction are artful without being arthouse. Some lol funny bits, plenty of whimsy and some great, gleeful performances. Watching this film made me just want to go and live on a beach in Mexico.

Geodude used Reply to Thread! It's super effective!
This film was so overhyped I couldn't believe it. Everyone told me to watch this film that I didn't know what the hell the title meant (stupid me for taking french in high school). So when I got around to watching it; I only pondered "...so what was so great about it."

I'd also been told this is almost a porn movie. That I will agree with. Although more "churros" in the movie than "tacos" and breasts, that was overlooked when seeing how hot the females were. I see how foreign films like putting nudity in their movies, but this was too much. Way too much. I do not see the need to show two guys masturbating while talking to eachother; or watch as they make out later as a girl goes down on both of them. Unnecessary.

I got nothing out of the movie. It is said to be one of those "life changing" things, but I do not see how. Somewhat entertaining, but nothing to go out of your way to watch.

Pros: Female nudity, some humor.
Cons: Dull story, in Spanish, long.

Sounded interesting and was, I don't really have a lot to add. I was a little dissapointed with the ending though, and the making out.

A pretty aimless coming of age/magical summer story that I didn't like very much. It seemed like both the social commentary and the comedy (what little there was) took a back seat. Back seat to what? Nothingness. The resounding impression that I got after seeing Y Tu Mama Tambien could best be described as "so?" I don't think I laughed one time, and I certainly didn't care enough about the characters to be interested at all by the ending's two "twists." All in all, mediocre as it gets. 2.5 of 5.

Nice try, asshole

Good, but doesn't live up to the hype. Not especially profound. Some nice character moments, though. The two boys aren't very likable, and yet you still care about them and hope they turn out okay. Rating: 3.5
