Directed by: Some German guy you probably never heard of. Starring: No one important other than the boyfriend from Run Lola Run This is one REALLY good movie. Anyone with a strong stomach and an interest into why guards abuse their prisoners should go rent this movie. The movie is loosely based on an experiment done in Yale University in the 60's where a few professors got some college kids together and had one group be prisoners and the ohter be guards. The experiment didn't go well and the guards ended up torturing and humilliating the prisoners because the guards don't have any training. The movie starts off with reguler germans signing up for the prisoner experiment and getting to know their fellow guinea pigs. The guasrds aren't allowed to hit their own prisoners, and the prisoners know that; and the guards; who have no training, are constantly taunted and riddiculed. The movie does a very good job of showing what human beings are cabable of doing when it comes to keeping hteir own race in line. Oh, this movie isin't another snotty Euro exxistentialist romp whitch only film snobs with pony tails that went to 4 years of film school can understand. This movie is really cool and i highly reccomend it to anyone thats interested in a good movie. The only real complaint with this movie is this really boring love interst in thebeginning that feels out of place and can easily trick someone into thinking this movie is just another boring slow-moving romantic drama. Bottom line- Go rent this movie, there arent't any good movies playing right now, believe me I've seen them they suck(cough*Sky Captain*cough). RATING: 4.5 PROS: Very well done, creepy. Good German perspective on the Yale prison experiment done a while back. CONS: Might be a little too graphic for some, strange love interest in the beginning that feels out of place for the rest of the movie ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: SamstersAPerson fucked around with this message at 04:40 on Oct 3, 2004 |

This movie is really awesome. The story is great and the characters are fantastic. If you liked Run Lola Run, you'll probably like this movie (not because it's exactly like it, but they are similar in many ways). It was a hard movie to watch but i like a movie that affects me. 4.5/5

Yep, a very good film. The ending in particular is a highlight.

Great flick. Does that star have some massive lips or what? It doesn't matter though, as long as the huge lips of his acting ability can wrap themselves around the penis of my cinema enjoyment and blow a wad of pure movie-watching happiness, it's all good! 4/5

4.5 Well written, good acting, and exciting drama. It's not a terribly important movie, just a standard tale of one group interacting with another, but it is very well done and definetly worth taking a note of/ renting on video sometime.

Inspired by the Stanford prison experiment from the 70s. The movie starts off pretty well, doing a great job of showing the gradual decline of the participants. There are some great scenes, like when the guy is getting a haircut. Unfortunately, while the beginning is a pretty nice drama, by the end the movie has inexplicably turned into some kind of crappy thriller. The last few parts seem ridiculously implausible and over-the-top; I would have liked this movie much better if it had just remained a statement about man's capacity for being an rear end in a top hat, but the filmmaker decided to tack on some useless chase scenes to the end. 3.5

A terrific little film. Very slick. I especially like the Luftwaffe guy. And I really want a pair of those camera glasses. Oh, and the "why do women watch porn films to the end?" joke made me laugh like a drain - though has never made anyone else laugh when I've repeated it. I did sort of question what kind of professor sets up a phenomenally expensive month-long experiment and then sods off to a conference midway through, and I found the Ferrari-aspiring stallholder character a bit too wet to really empathise with, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Voted 4.5.

5/5 One of my favourite films. And i pretty much hate every film there is. Will genuinely freak you out in a way that maybe only "Manhunt" did. Watch it in the original language though!! (German). You will miss a lot if you watch it dubbed (german is particulary apt for a film like this)

I studied those experiments at uni and the notion of research ethics did get a good boosting after the original experiment was abandoned due to the psychological effects on the subjects. Apparently one or two of the subjects committed suicide after. I haven't seen the film, but I beleive the original experiment was attempted by Stanley Milgrim. Correct me if I'm wrong, as it has been a while.
