Directed by: Stephen Chow
Starring: Stephen Chow, Chan Kwok Kwan, Leung Siu Lung, Yuen Wah, Yuen Chau

Anyone who knows Stephen Chow or Shaolin Soccer has probably been eagerly awaiting this film. Set in the 1940's Shanghai, where crime is king and gangs rule the street, Sing (Stephen Chow) aims to join the Axe Gang, which rules Shanghai with a bloody hatchet. With his ignorance, he unwittingly ignites a war between the gang and the inhabitants the poor "Pig Sty Lane." Without saying, anyone living in Hong Kong will know about this film. Probably the greatest and largest project undertaken by Chow, this is by far on a different scale than even Shaolin Soccer.

The film follows a very different approach than that typically undertaken by Hong Kong films, yet retains the very distinctive "nonsensical" humour of Stephen Chow. There is little doubt with regards to his comic genius, but his style may not suit everyone at times. The film closely parallels Shaolin Soccer in the sense of its production size, popularity, and integration of CG into many of its scenes.

Clearly this should not be regarded as a CG fest that many Hollywood films have gone. While CG undertakes an extensive role in the visuals of the film, they fit in with the film. The film takes on a parody or basis on the 60's and 70's kung fu films. Over the top and fantastic martial arts seem ordinary in a film of this type. The CG's aren't seamless in the sense that they are unnoticeable, such as in Fight Club, but in that they are very well done and of a great quality. It makes no attempt to replace story points with CG, but rather, as comic gags or to make the fights so much more entertaining and great to watch.

The cast of the film is top notch; with the exception of Ng Man Tat, virtually all of the cast from Shaolin Soccer have been included, including Wong Yut Fei, Chan Kwok Kuen, Lam Chi Chung, Tin Kai Man, and Lam Chi Sing. The performance by Chow is great as usual, performing and fitting perfectly with his distinctive style of humour and expressions. The Landlady (Yuen Chau) portrays her role as the loud, angry woman to the dot, giving the versatility needed as the movie progresses. Yuen Wah is no exception as well, reprising his typical villain role and brilliantly portraying the protagonist Landlord as a easygoing and lazily sly character.

However there are some redundancies in the characters added to the story. Many of the characters seem to add little to the story except for melodramatic scenes. The character Fong (Wong Sheng Yi) plays a mute ice cream vendor. As one can imagine, she has no lines in the film; aside from melodrama about the past, she does little to add to the story of the film. It would have been better if other actors such as Lam Suet (Axe Gang's Leader) took a more larger role in the film. While the characters are far from being just thrown into the story for the sake of being there (such as in Stormriders) many of the characters seem to linger between a major and minor role in the film. Sing's sidekick (Lam Chi Sing) seems to do little in the film other than support and comedic value, despite sharing most of the screentime with Chow. Chow himself does not come across as the main character. Rather, the Landlord and Landlady seem to undertake this, as the story focuses around them instead of Sing. Even Brother Sum (Chan Kwok Kwan) has a larger role than Sing. While this maybe a decision by Chow to place his character as a major but not main role, Sing does seem to linger and wander between main and support.

The second flaw is that the story is clear, but the progression and delivery is somewhat weak and lacking. The overall plot and concept of the film takes a long time to develop, and follows the pattern of melodrama, fighting, then comedy repeatedly through the film. Towards the first half of the film this is very apparent; a tense or melancholistic scene is played out, followed by a long comedic scene laced with Chows brand of comedy. Many of the scenes seem to play out without explanation or appear spontaneously. Developments in characters and story either appear in too short of a time, or spontaneously. The end developments of the films highlight this weakness clearly.

Regardless of the flaws, the cinematography of this film is marvelous. Camera angles are used almost perfectly, allowing the wide use of comedic and dramatic devices and scenes. The particular scene in the car with Brother Sum and his assistant (Tin Kai Man) is one of the funniest scenes in the movie, uses some basic yet fitting camera work. The comedic scenes, as mentioned, are very Stephen Chow; that is, a very nonsensical and slapstick, silly type of humour. Many of his jokes are cultural and language based, so those relying on subtitles will ultimately lose out on many of the gags in the film.

The action scenes need little introducing. Yuen Wo Ping and Sammo Hung helped with the choreography, so don't expect the bullshit you see in the Matrix Reloaded, but rather, full out kung fu scenes as they should be. Many of the scenes do rely on CG, although they are done in such a way as to make them "believable." The scene with the "yi wu" and the two assassins demonstrates how well this is done. All the actors who do the action scenes are very well established martial arts actors in the Chinese film industry; Yuen Wah and Leung Siu Ling really show of their physical finesse despite their age. Even Stephen Chow (who is a great admirer of Bruce Lee) does his share of fighting very well. The fight scenes portray the power and abilities of each fighter perfectly, with some well done CG to exaggerate many of their fantastic abilities. They have learnt from Shaolin Soccer and developed their use of CG to a much higher level. The only real criticism of the fight scenes is the last one, where it doesn't really portray the strength and power of the character that well.

Needless to say, this is a very entertaining film to watch. It does have its minor flaws, but the strengths of the film really make them somewhat unimportant. Personally I do have to admit I left with a sense of dissatisfaction mainly due to the weak character pacing as well as story progression. Yet the pure entertainment value makes this a great film to watch overall.

Highly recommended.

RATING: 4.5

PROS: Stephen Chow style humour, incredible action scenes, well done visuals and cinematography
CONS: Stephen Chow style humour, predictable story devices, incoherent story and progression

Just saw this, and it is easily one of the best films I've ever seen. So many times while watching it I just kept saying how awesome it was. Take all the good aspects of Shaolin Soccer and melt them together in a musicless musical that assaults the senses.

I saw part of Matrix: Revolutions shortly after and just laughed at it for being so terrible in comparison.

I've never done this before, but:

HEINEKEN!?! FUCK THAT SHIT! PABST BLUE RIBBON!!
I loved Shaolin Soccer. Loved it, I tell you. Hong Kong comedies are so typically cultural that few people outside of Asia can really understand them, but Chow makes his movies with a cultural accessibility that is very welcome. The movies are as slapstick as most HK comedies but not as referential to Asian pop-culture as the rest of them. This said, Chow's latest, Kung Fu Hustle is loving sweet. He's one part Jackie Chan and one part Jim Carrey.

The story is that Sing (Chow) wants badly to be a member of the Axe Gang, a legion of mobsters running Hong Kong in the 1940s. The problem is that he's completely inept as is his big-rear end buddy Brother Sum. The only thing that will get them into the Axe Gang is if they commit a crime, but they're too stupid to do it. Meanwhile, the Axe Gang wants to whip-rear end on the people of Pig Sty Alley, a wicked ghetto section of Hong Kong that is home to a few of the most unexpected kung fu masters you've ever seen.

It's extremely funny. There's a laugh out loud scene every couple of seconds. It's almost like kung fu Looney Tunes. Some characters can run very fast and they'll run in place for a second before tearing off, leaving a cloud of dust behind them. The special effects, of which there are many, are also very good and very imaginative. A pair of assassins who fight with a musical instrument, project flying swords and skeletal warriors with their musical notes.

Ultimately, it's much better than Shaolin Soccer and desperately needs a US release. One of the funniest movies I've seen from overseas.

This one gets a wel-deserved 5.5

God, I just watched this for the first time last night.

Amazing.

I didn't think a comedy kung fu movie could take Shaolin Soccer's place as my favourite, but my god. Everything about this movie is just excellent - absolutely everything. I alternated throughout the whole movie between laughing loud enough to have my neighbours complain, and sitting speechless, occasionally uttering "Holy poo poo, that is so badass."

5.5/5, it's sitting atop my list of favourite movies ever.

Excellent movie and seconded on it being much better than Shaolin Soccer. Although I did think it was unecessary to have the mute ice cream girl angle in the movie, everything about it just rocked. The comedy, the orchestrated music, the cg being very well placed to just make the master's abilities more fantastic, everything just made the movie all that more enjoyable. Also the knife handle/chase scene I never get tired of watching, my sides hurt everytime I watch it.

Great action sequences, especially the 3 guys vs. the Axe Gang. The music in that fight was really great. Also in the musician fight. In fact, this has the best soundtrack ever.

The humor was a little cartoony occasionally, but otherwise good. The ice cream whore was really unncessary.

Watched this last night, and I think it has taken the top spot for my favourite Stephen Chow movie. I love all the references to other movies in this one (Burly Brawl, all the famous wuxia movies) and Chow's take on wuxia as a genre.

The chase scene was one of the funniest I've seen in recent film.

A well-deserved 5/5 for this one. GG Stephen Chow!

I have never seen any of this man's movies before, and now I feel like I am missing out. This movie was great.

Great in the sense that it takes oldschool Warner Bros slapstick comedy to a level you never see in movies, and it fits perfectly. Combined with action sequences that are very capable along with characters that are both memorable and downright funny, and you get a classic. I love over-the-top kung fu, and this delivers in spades.

It starts off slowly, but just steamrolls from there and never stops. As mentioned there is heavy heavy use of CGI, but it just adds to the cartoon violence and never really takes you out of a scene for being 'too fake'. It's used the way it should be used, to make you laugh and be in awe at the same time.

Loved the three masters. Loved the musicians. Loved the landlady. Loved it all.

This movie was great, charming, and funny most of the time, but lost its way I thought. Both the ice cream woman love bullshit and the nauseatingly common :ssj:-ishness for the very last fight were ridiculous, unnecessary, and just didn't fit well with what I hoped would be a consistently humorous film that didn't resort to tired gimmicks. But this is Stephen Chow, so I wasn't suprised.

The blind musicians and the couple kicked rear end though.

SPACE FACE! SPACE FACE!

I loved it, I'd never seen Shaolin Soccer or heard of the 'slapstick kung fu' genre before seeing this last week but now I want to see every single one. (Saw shaolin soccer, it was good but kind of disappointing if you've seen Kung Fu Hustle first since the common themes are implemented better in KFH).

I was literally laughing out loud at the scene where he's trying to throw knives at the landlady. It was so corny and slapstick yet it just came out of nowhere. I too noticed the melodrama/comedy/fight pattern but I think it actually worked. If the movie was just full of slapstick moments I think the comedy would have been less effective.

For me the landlord and landlady stole the show. They undergo so many transformations, from chiselling slumlords to heroic defenders of their neighbourhood to urbane casino goers/beast fighters to happy couple strolling by the candy shop.

The CG isn't all good, in fact a lot of it is quite cheap and distracting (e.g. swollen lips) but in the areas where it counts it definitely works. The movie keeps presenting such a crazy progression of over the top kung fu battles that by the end you can only watch in disbelief. The first one happens and you go "okay, that's pretty crazy" and then the next one and you're saying "Wow, you know they kicked that up a notch" and then the next one comes and you're like "You know it doesn't get any better than this" and then the last one comes and you go "ehh, that was kind of disappointing".

I agree with the 'film nerd' sentiments listed above about the pacing and lack of focus on certain characters, but the film is filled with such a cheeky, dynamic energy that you can forgive it that easily. Even my girlfriend liked it, and she fell asleep watching Shaolin Soccer.

4.5/5
Completely engrossing and entertaining but suffering from some technical flaws. An incredible break from the slow-moving Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon/Hero/House of Flying Daggers style of foreign period film.

I was a big fan of Shaolin Soccer and was one of the 13 people who watched it here in the US in theaters. I saw all the great reviews for this film so I had to check it out. I didn't even know it was Stephen Chow.

I have to say, it is far inferior to Shaolin Soccer in pretty much every aspect. The first post hit a lot of the points. We shift focus from character to character and it's hard for us to get an emotional attachment to one or the other because their transformations are so huge. You have people going from hated jerks to perfect gods with little or no reason other than that they now want to.

Shaolin had a great and sympathetic love story throughout the movie. This movie had one that STARTED at about mid-point in the film. It just came out of nowhere and we were expected to care. Lots of characters with no purpose. I felt like he was trying to give some of his friends work. There was just no point in a lot of these characters.

The really huge gripe I have is the complete deus ex machina ending. There was a point when the audience I was with was laughing and then, SILENCE. I don't think I'll spoiler this because I it's a big part of the movie, but the film gets kind of quasi-religious at the end and that's how everything is fixed. It's almost the exact definition of deus ex machina. It wasn't something the audience could predict and it wasn't due to any actions the characters really took. Buddha came over and that was that. I don't care it was Buddha or Allah or God or Shiva or whatever. It was just contrived to me.

There were some really great kung fu scenes, but there were also some really horrible ones. The musicians were something new and interesting. So was the Lion's Roar. But the Beast went from stating it was all about speed to using giant toad style??? I just felt the movie kind of fell apart at the end. They had done so much throughout the movie that he was having difficulty coming up with a suitably-large finale.

It was silly and fun during the beginning, but I think he needs to take a few classes on structure and how to not piss off your audience.

I liked Shaolin Soccer better. It's a fun movie but began to drag a little by the end, and we've all seen the final battle a zillion times in other movies. The love story out of nowhere was weird too.

The CGI effects are cool, but at about midway through the movie you stop caring about all the big hits and crazy moves. It's kind of like in other CGI fests where they put the main character in so many outlandish situations that you stop caring by the end.

I never thought I would like this movie as much as I did, because I've never seen a Stephen Chow movie and I never connect well with the pacing or subject matter of most asian comedies. Gong Fu really surprised me and I'd dare say it's now my favorite action comedy.

The characters were strong enough that I found it strange how quickly I got attached to them, and in a few places was sad to see them go so soon. From the dancing axe gang leader to the kung fu musicians to The Beast, I think they were all really memorable. They start out as familiar archetypes and are transformed before the end of the film, not always just for parody.

The story is very well woven and loops back into itself many times. I really don't think there was anything that didn't need to be there, so much that when you hear and offhand reference to a man who loved kung fu so much that he went insane, you know he's going to appear somewhere in the movie. Someone said the ending was a Deus Ex Machina and I think that's ridiculous, because the elements of the ending were foreshadowed long before.

Furthermore, Chow seems to know that you know it, so when the girl from the reluctant hero's childhood flashback appears, he doesn't need him to recognize her or have a touching moment. Instead, he steals ice cream from her and has a big, needlessly long mocking laugh at her expense as she hopelessly chases after the subway car he escapes in. I'd call it my favorite part of the movie but there are so many others I don't want to spoil.

Hilarious, with lots of nods to western cinema and cartoons. I got some strong Ren & Stimpy vibes when I found out the protagonist and his fat friend lived in a traffic light.

Just saw it. And honestly, I didn't like it. I didn't know what to make of the film. It just seemed so random and forced : By the way, they're kung fu masters now, so are they, and they, and they.

The humor was really stupid and I didn't laugh once.

The Kung Fu, which I expected to be great, was terrible. It wasn't even "real". People were just randomly flying through the air or or kicking or punching each other. It just didn't flow, like the old kung fu movies (with no cgi or outside help, even!) did. "The Lion's Roar"? Come on.

The only really good part were the two "friends", who wanted to be in the Axe Gang. They had good character development and I wish the movie showed more about them.

I spent most of this movie leaning forward grinning like a maniac or saying "hahaha what!" in the most gleeful voice possible. The humor was great, the fights were utterly nuts, and the fact that my theater played it at about double normal volume really helped. All the music really helped you feel pumped in the fights, and having the music be a weapon in one of the fights was brilliant. I don't know much about the kung fu genre, but as a casual moviegoer I loved the hell out of this.

The love story was pretty lame, but some of the scenes associated with it were so unbelievably ridiculous (drawing the lollipop in his own blood) that I started thinking it was part of the humor as well.

I too went in expecting a tongue-in-cheek spoof of every major kung fu movie due to the way the physical comedy was stressed so much in the trailers. But I was even more surprised than I expected to be, if that makes sense. I was in love with all the characters, and I especially liked how the Landlady and Landlord changed through the movie. When I first saw them I thought they would simply be one-dimensional characters and that would be that. I even missed all the clues that they weren't because I dismissed them as comedic tools.

To be honest I wasn't completely sure about the movie until about the first major fight scene, and I wasn't absolutely sure about it until the musicians were introduced. They really sealed the deal for me.

I agree about the under-used characters like the mute girl and the Buddhist Palm guy's sidekick.

I also liked how every major character had a kung fu style associated with them.

5/5.5, if only for the slow beginning.

Although from the trailer I couldn't tell it was supposed to be a comedy(besides the quotes telling me it is indeed hilarious), I assumed it would be an action-packed movie filled with great humor, how else could it get such good reviews? Instead, the movie was a series of poorly done fight scenes, with rushed special effects and bad Mad TV jokes.

There is no real story, the entire movie consists of seemingly normal people suddenly unleashing their powers in a sub-par fight scene, in which the worst of slapstick humor is used, along with a bunch of terrible special effects. There is almost no character developement whatsoever, and what little there is provides the only truly funny part in the movie (golden shower).

Just to get an idea of whether you will like this movie, the name of the town is "Pig Sty Village". If you find this hilarious, then you will probably find the entire movie hilarious. However, if you are not a fan of stupid, Mad TV humor and crappy fight sequences, this is not the movie for you.

That was one of the best movies I've seen. From the beginning I could tell it was a half-comedy, so I could feel okay about the crazy kung-fu and flying, whereas in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which was a serious movie, it didn't work too well for me.

The cinematography was amazing. Right from the beginning with the awesome dance scene, and all the cheesy stuff like the dark storm clouds following the Axe Gang, all of it looked very good. The two assassins using their instrument to launch blades resulted in one of the most amazing scenes I can think of. I was in awe at that whole sequence.

The comedy was good. There were some low-level laughs throughout the whole thing, partly from actual jokes and partly because of the cheesiness ("Pig Sty Alley", for example) but then there were some hilarious gags. At one point I laughed harder and longer than I ever have at a movie. There were some perfectly executed jokes.

The action was great. In my opinion it was a lot better than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and other movies like that, mostly because of how unique some of the fighting was. Like the iron rings, or the blade-launching instrument. It brought something new to the standard kung-fu fight, which is a major improvement because no matter how well-choreographed, punching and kicking can get pretty boring.

There were some flaws. Some characters like Brother Sum didn't play a big enough part to fill their potential, and some weren't too useful. But I wouldn't say it detracted from the film too much. It was a little slow at times, but I'll chalk that up to it being a foreign film, they seem to be much slower-paced. There was one small let-down when it ended, and that's that "Ballroom Blitz" wasn't really in the movie, just the trailer.

The pacing and structure is all over the place, and being so accustomed to the Hollywood formula makes it a bit jarring the first time you see it. Beyond that, it's just a goofy, manic kung-fu flick that will have something for everybody to enjoy. Chow has a unique talent for corny physical humour, most of which have to be seen to be appreciated. For instance, one of the funniest bits in the film is when, after being launched high into the air by an attack, Chow steps on a bird for leverage.

I had really high hopes for this, especially after enjoying Shaolin Soccer as much as I did. My complaints echo those posted here already... the way the story progresses just doesn't work. Now I know this is supposed to be a kung fu comedy movie, but it wasn't good enough at being that to survive solely on those merits. The story bounces back and forth so much that it really needs to be tied together neatly in the end, but it isn't. That's not to say it isn't resolved; it's just done very sloppily.

The action is great and often very clever, and the odd humor is there, too. (I wish I understood Chinese, because I'm sure it's packed with subtle jokes that just don't translate in the subtitles.) Somehow, though, it just didn't fit together as well as Shaolin Soccer did.

Agreed!

Furthermore, while not exactly compelling - given it's spastic direction - the movie was definitely entertaining. I loved the village - it's characters, appearance, etc. But I was expecting there to be more reason for the Axe Gang to exert their influence in the place (e.g. follow-up on the thugness they showed in the beginning), but instead they'd just sort of flitter back occasionally in order to avenge one of their member's bad haircuts.

Regardless, I don't think the ensenmblish direction and lack of apparent goal detracted from the movie too much. The humor translated so well that I couldn't help being thoroughly entertained. "Look at those guys, carrying a coffin," says Chow's sidekick. And that's the joke! They happen to stop what they're doing to watch these two guys for a few moments as they work their way through a crowd while carrying a "coffin" on their backs. Neither Chow nor him can think of anything witty to say, anything scripted and brilliant that some writer thought up a few months before as a great gag. So they just make an observation and then smirk to themselves. Something all of us do on a regular basis. Their humanity shines through in that moment - trivial though it may be - and I think it's a decent example of the strong character development of this movie.

I really didn't know what to expect when I sat down to watch this. The humor, impressive visuals, strong writing, and fun action scenes kept me chained to my seat.

My family was initially skeptical but were won over because of just how funny and referential it was. It was one big pop culture soup that I though was extremely well executed. "Oooh, got a little too serious. You okay there, little buddy?"
This movie fell flat for me for some of the same reasons already stated - pacing character development and effects.

I felt no real attachment to anyone in the film and didn't even get the feeling that Chow was the main character until the film had already developed.

Many of the fight scenes also dragged toward the end of the film.

Annoyed, but NOT DEAD
5/5 Not the perfect film, but extremely entertaining.

Highpoints :

The Gangster's dancing in the beginning.

Buck-Toothed Jane, that's just funny.

The Musicians loving rocked.

The hot mute girl and the Lollipop full-circle.
