Directed by: Anh Hung Tran Starring: Le Van Loc, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Tran Nu Yên-Khê, Nhu Quynh Nguyen Another wonderful work by Tran (who has a perfect batting average in my book). As with his other films, he lets his characters and their stories unfold slowly, and calls attention to the striking details with masterful visuals. Unlike the serenity of his other films, however, this one takes place in the brutal chaos of Ho Chi Minh City. Events occur in a fairly formulaic and predictable pattern, not deviating far from other "descent into the underworld" films. The motivations of the main characters are at times unclear, but perhaps this is because I was a bit confused about who was doing what to whom for part of the film. Minor gripes aside, this is an excellent movie. RATING: 4.5 PROS: excellent visual style; engaging story and characters CONS: a little confusing ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112767/
