Directed by: Luis Buñuel Starring: Jeanne Moreau, Georges Géret Technically, one of the best Buñuels I've seen. The cinematography is striking, the acting spot on, everything is just right. But as far as content goes, not especially interesting. It doesn't really seem to add much to the Buñuel oeuvre. Class differences, anti-facist statements, foot fetishism... he's covered this ground before. The characters, particularly the titular role, lack significant depth. The film has some good humor to it, but ultimately not much to offer. RATING: 3.5 PROS: technically strong; funny moments, Jeanne Moreau CONS: same ol' same ol' for Buñuel; often dull; feels slight ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058249/

This might be Bunuel's most accessible film to mainstream audiences. It's still full of his classic touches, but it is relatively conventional in comparison to some of his other films. This was the third film I had seen by him, after L'Age D'or and Un Chien Andalou, so I was surprised by how tame (for lack of a better word) it seemed. I still prefer it to Renoir's Rules of the Game or Altman's Gosford Park, which explore some of the same themes.
