Directed by: Albert & David Maysles Starring: The Rolling Stones, some Hell's Angels, and a lot of hippies A fascinating document. Who is responsible for Altamont? The Hell's Angels, unclear of how to perform their duties and coming from a culture that incorporates, if not promotes, violence? The organizers, so desperate to create another Woodstock but obviously inept at it? The fans, equally anxious to recreate that experience but rushing too eagerly into it, ignoring the community around them? Or perhaps it's simply the death of the 60's, as the ideal of peace and fellowship gave way to the hedonism of "sex, drugs, rock n' roll" that ultimately can only result in self-absorption. It's an interesting situation to ponder. I was a bit disappointed the Stones' performances... very sloppy, and not in any kind of endearing way. Mick's swagger and strut are alternately captivating and ridiculous. I would have liked to see more of the other acts, as well. RATING: 3.5 PROS: raises interesting questions CONS: performance material not so good ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065780/
