Nice try, asshole

Directed by: Howard Hawks
Starring: Margaret Sheridan, Kenneth Tobey, Robert Cornthwaite, Douglas Spencer

This is absolutely mediocre sci-fi with nothing at all to distinguish it from dozens of other similar films. Hawks' trademark snappy patter fails miserably here, with not one gag eliciting even a chuckle, and the actors quite noticeably pausing midstream to allow someone else to interject "spontaneously" with a limp witticism. T he scientific basis for the story is as threadbare as it gets, and the sets and effects are as cheap as they come. The moral of the story seems to be threefold: 1) if you don't know what it is, shoot it; 2) scientists are stupid and weak; 3) women in the workplace are okay, but they really should settle down and get married after they've got it out of their system. Not satisfying on any level.

RATING: 1

PROS: it's almost fun in that campy/lovely way
CONS: generic, stupid and careless

The typical 50's Sci-Fi extravaganza. Hawks should have stuck with westerns.

hello
A blood drinking carrot? I guess it has some good scares for a film of the era, but as FitFortDanga mentioned, the politics of it are pretty reprehensible from a contemporary persepctive. Carpenter's remake is waaaay better, both in creating a truly frightening monster and for its far more insightful political observations.

I think some parts are a little silly, but isn't any movie with an alien?

Excellent pacing, great cast, and a decent horror movie. I feel that this is part of the trio of great 1950's sci-fi movies (the other two are Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Day the Earth Stood Still). The Thing isn't as much of a sci-fi/horror movie, but seems to be more of thriller. It's the same thing for the other two... sometimes the best sci-fi movies aren't sci-fi really.
