Directed by: Alan Parker Starring: Mickey Rourke, Robert deNiro, Lisa Bonet Yeah, Mickey Rourke used to be a washed-up joke of an actor, but there was a time before that when he was actually a pretty good "thespian". Rourke has said of Angel Heart that he wasn't interested in acting at the time and just memorized his lines, but this doesn't really show in the movie: his performance is what carries the plot, which is pretty hard to follow at times. Rourke plays private detective Harry Angel, who gets hired by Louis Cyphre (get it?) to hunt down Johnny Favorite, a no-name crooner. When Angel begins his investigation, many of the people he questions end up dead in gruesome fashions. Who is trying to disrupt his investigation, and why is Louis Cyphre so interested in having him carrying it out? After Angel has gotten deeper than deep into the deep south, screwed Lisa Bonet (who is so loving hot in this movie that she is about to explode), the BIG TWIST hits and it's a M. Night-worthy twist, ahead of its time, I guess. Talking about M. Night, the cinematography is very reminiscent of his movies (or is it the other way around?): draped in shadow and smoke, dark and uninviting. Angel Heart isn't exactly sure whether it's a horror or a film-noir, but it does well enough in both genres. Robert DeNiro has an extended cameo as Louis Cyphre, and it feels like the scenes were shot on a totally different day from the rest. He doesn't seem very interested in the role, and since it's an important character that he plays, this drags the movie down. The plot can also be somewhat confusing, introducing many characters and plot devices in the course of the 110 minutes running time. RATING: 4.0 PROS: Steamy sex scenes, gore, good twist, Rourke CONS: DeNiro, a bit confusing ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092563/

I actually think (hope) DeNiro played the part deliberately detached. I didn't get a disinterested vibe. He doesn't need to be more involved. At most, He should be bemused by how the revelation unfolds.
