You Know What You Did...
Directed by: Various
Starring: Patrick Stewart, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula

Recently Released from Paramount is the Star Trek Borg DVD box set. The Box set includes 14 episodes (2 are 2 hour specials). The shows are orderd by Stardate, so the single episode of Enterprise (Regeneration) comes first. This can have confusing results for the un-initiated watcher. However the rest of the episodes continue from The Next Generation's first encounter with the Borg caused by the Infamous Q (Q-Who), all the way up to the final episode of Voyager (Endgame).

The episodes are all exciting, thoughtful, and provocative. Superb examples of what made the Star Trek shows so special and long lasting.

Perhaps the best episode on the disc could arguably be the two episode story arc "The Best of Both Worlds", which premiered as Star Trek: The Next generation's Season Finale, and Premiere in the 1990 season. In this episode The Borg attempt there first full assault on the Federation, and capture Picard to transform him into Locutus of Borg. This story arc carried over to the popular Star Trek Film "First Contact". The episode is exciting, filled with action and suspense, and those great human nuances that we expect from star trek, like Riker's promotion to Captain of the Enterprise after Picard's capture and assimilation, and the struggles he has with both.

On the other side the weakest episode must be the Voyager episode "Drone", which plays as more of a remake of the superior TNG episode "I Borg", which is also included in the set. In "Drone" Voyager's own assimilated Borg Seven of Nine is involved in a transporter accident with the Doctor and his 29th century Mobile Emitter. Seven's nanoprobes fuse and assimilate with the emitter, and thanks to some genetic material from an unsuspecting crewman create an new, 500 year advanced borg drone, which Seven lazily names "One". The episode is mostly boring meandering as the drone learns about his surroundings and the interactions of humans. This is the same lame dialog we heard DATA spout during the first 2 seasons of TNG. the episode ends on a downer, and to be honest the logic behind One's final motivations seems deeply flawed.

As I mentioned before the box set could be potentially confusing to the un-devoted watcher. Many questions would arise during the process, such as "Who is Lor", "who is Q", "how did the doctor get his 29th century emitter anyway". However this minor beef with the box set can be refuted by a simple point on the cover. "Fan Collective", the box set is by fans, for fans.

Another downfall of the box set is the lack of special features. With only a handful of text commentaries, and one audio commentary, the box set seems sparse. Also if you gift this to someone, or have never really watched star trek yourself, I highly recommend picking up a copy of “first contact” as well. If you don’t you will be missing a large part of the story of the Borg

With seasons of the Star Trek series reaching in price from $150, this box set seems a welcome alternative for those simply interested in the Federation’s greatest enemy "The Borg". I recommend this box set highly.

Also keep a look out for other fan collectives, featuring the best time travel episodes, the best Q episodes, and more.

RATING: 5

PROS: an awesome collective of 14 episodes that when played togeather create an involving story arc
CONS: lack of special features, confusing for the un-initiated
