Lieutenant Dan posted:I have a friend I want to introduce to ska as a phenomenon, and I'm not sure where to start short of dragging to a Reel Big Fish live show. He's into swing and jazz and music of that nature, and I'm more of a fan of the punk / DIY / big stupid third wave stuff. What should I give him to listen to? He's not feeling Streetlight. Here's a few bands to check out: New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble St-Petersburg Ska-Jazz Review Sao Paulo Ska Jazz Catwalk (there may be more than one band with this name. Check out the album "Thin Rebellion") Do you happen to have access to Spotify? I have a large playlist I'm working on all the time that is mostly traditional style ska. There's a few ska punk songs on it, but I've mostly stayed away from it. Check it out here if you can: http://open.spotify.com/user/mrjellybean/playlist/0k0IzxO0SAmBmKcRwAgZLw Also, hello SA Ska Thread. Just signed up here and mostly for this thread. I've lurked here for a while so it's nice to finally be able to post.

So what albums are everyone looking forward to this year? Last year was a pretty drat good year for ska and I'm hoping for an even better one this year. I'm sure there are more releases, but here's what I can think of at the moment. -Streetlight Manifesto - "The Hands That Thieve" -Five Iron Frenzy's new album -The Scofflaws - "Skinhead Beer Party" (Read that this was in the works on The Duff Guide To Ska) -The Lions - "This Generation" (I guess this is more reggae, but Deston Berry and Alex Désert of Hepcat are in the band so I'm pretty pumped to hear more) - 2000 Tons of TNT's new album (Heard about these guys fairly recently. Great band that kind of reminds me of The Aggrolites. LIsten to their first album here.) The JB Conspiracy's new album - (Pretty sure they have a new album finally coming out. If their 4 song EP "The Calm" that came out a while ago is anything to go by, the album will be amazing) I'm sure there are some more coming out that are slipping my mind at the moment, but I'd like to hear what everyone else is looking forward to.

Looking into it a little more, JBC seems to be done with their tour with Reel Big Fish and are looking to get the album mixed. Definitely check out The Calm EP when you get a chance if you haven't already.

I don't think I'll be all that bummed if the THTT turns out to be garbage. I'm not a Streetlight super fan or anything. The samples sounded great so I guess I'm not to worried about it being terrible. If it does suck it probably won't be as crushing as hearing the new album by The Expos. Their first two albums were awesome laid back ska with a great, unique sound. Their new album "Lake House" is terrible, boring indie style music. I had no idea they had a new album out and stumbled upon it all pumped to hear it. I almost wish I never knew it existed.

Hobbit posted:And yet Fishbone still looks great. I think I'm going to listen to Fishbone all day at work today. All the Fishbone fans here should check out ex-Fishbone member Chris Dowd's new band The Ultra Infidels. They have two songs you can listen to on their Soundcloud page here: https://soundcloud.com/theultrainfidels/sets/the-ultra-infidels. Cubicle is a fast ska song that gets a little psychedelic in the middle, while The Walking Dead is some kind of weird circus rock tune. Good stuff that does kind of sound like something Fishbone would do. Hopefully they have an album coming out this year.

I'm seeing people posting on Streetlight Manifesto's Facebook that the release date is April 30th. I haven't seen an announcement though. I hope it's true. Yeah, I guess it's true. Rx Bandits is one my favorite bands. Personally, I think every album they put out was better than the previous one. As much as I liked them when they played ska music, the progressive rock or whatever genre it is they turned into is so good. I remember reading they called it GrooveTech or something like that. That style really showcased how good of musicians they were. Especially C-Gak. That man is a beast on the drums. Also, best Rx Bandits side project is The Sound of Animals Fighting. Would love to see something new from them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgXx558cZhU

The Lions new album This Generation came out today. About halfway through it right now and it's awesome. Great ska/reggae album. It's the band I mentioned a few days ago with Deston Berry and Alex Désert of Hepcat on vocals. It's available on Spotify right now. Not sure if it's streaming anywhere else though. Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/album/0e0m99zxFDnUwneG6uBGyF This Generation Guess I'll share another band I just found out about that you guys might like. A female fronted ska punk band called Upbeat Allstars. They have a really great sound and their singer is pretty awesome. Check out their album Wake Up. Here's a few bands I've been listening to recently to check out. Popes of Chillitown - I think a few of you here would like this band. I wouldn't consider it ska punk, but it's a really energetic, fast paced style of ska. The Forthrights - Ska/Rocksteady The Dualers - Ska By The Rivers - Ska/Reggae The Internationals - Most of the stuff is instrumentals, but their newest album "Mousetrap" has an awesome female vocalist for the first half of the album. Definitely worth checking out. If you have Spotify I've got a playlist that's around 650 songs. Check it out here if you want to. It's pretty light on the ska punk though if that's what you're looking for. Also, does anyone have any good ska sites to check out? The only one I usually visit frequently is Reggae Steady Ska. Found out about some great bands there and I'm looking for more sites like it.

Progress still had a lot of ska and reggae influence though. I would say that was when they stopped really making ska music and became more of a prog rock band with The Resignation and ...And The Battle Begun. They distanced themselves even further with Mandala by not having horns and pretty much the only song having any sort of ska/reggae style being Bury It Down Low. One of my favorite bands and definitely agree that every album is better than the last. Mandala is so good.
