There's a comp from '80 called Oi! The Album that offers a pretty good overview. It's not my favourite scene, but obviously there's lots of classics bands in it: Cockney Rejects, 4-Skins, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Angelic Upstarts, The Business, Anti-Nowhere League etc.

Farting at gigs has been a part of punk rock since 1976. If you don't want to smell farts, then what are you even doing at a punk show? The place where people explicitly come to fart? It's like coming to my house party and expecting to not get brutally sexually harassed.

The stagedive thing is one of those debates that comes up like clockwork every two years ago and I don't get how it always manages to get past "some bands like it when you stagedive and some bands don't". Like, how is it any more complicated than that? Joyce Manor dude saying he doesn't want stagediving at his shows is not gonna make Converge suddenly go "huh, that guy's right" and ban stagediving at theirs. Who gives a gently caress?

It does go past that when someone flips out about the PC police trying to ban stagediving.

It's really funny to hear people from places like Boston say this, when I've been to so many sick punk gigs in my home town of 50 000 people (Kouvola, Finland), and in any case I could list probably probably like 50 very good active Finnish punk bands, when this whole country has roughly as many people as the Greater Boston area. Come on. It's got like violins. It's called "The Shape of Punk to Come". I don't know if people are actually playing that kind of music (I can't bear that post-hardcore stuff, as is obvious), but it's not a hardcore milestone. To hardcore it's a curiosity, a footnote.

There's exactly one hardcore record that deserves to be treated with religion, and it looks like this:

Good music is good regardless of how well it fits the relatively arbitrary rules of its genre or scene.

You're not having this conversation about a Rancid album, even if it's just as poo poo. The Shape of Punk to Come is laughable because it's Russell Brand's Revolution. It's bad hardcore stuffed inside a Godspeed You! Black Emperor song. It's offensive to everything it references. It's offensive to Ornette Coleman, it's offensive to Ian Svenonius, it would've made Debord mad. It's not about "breaking the rules", it's about exposing yourselves as laughable, terrible, talentless people, all the while pretending you're all Neo from The Matrix. gently caress that. gently caress that. Those guys are Swedish, they should've read Jante's law over a few times before stitching Derrida on their sleeves.

Eons ago "moving forward from punk" and "taking hardcore further" sounded like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=St9FcMQpH4k

There's no loving comparison. It's not about politics. It's about being clueless loving dickheads.

If I had to give the slightest of credits, no matter how reluctantly, to Refused, here goes: the dude's record label put out one of the best pop-pun tunes ever:
