I've just started watching wrestling after not doing so for most of 20 years. I have a pair of questions that I figure you goons will know the answers to. 1. I vaguely remember some wrestler way back when who would shoot some sort of colored mist out of his mouth, possibly as a finisher. How on earth do they pull that one off? Do they conceal a spray of some sort in their mouth for the duration of the match? 2. Likewise, the guys who pop up an hour or two into the show who seem to have been hiding under the ring up until then. Do they seriously hide them under there before the audience arrives? Or is there some sort of stage magic poo poo going on where they bring them down when no one's looking? I can't imagine it's all that great to be cramped up under a ring for 3 or 4 hours with dudes landing above you all the time. I also assume that there's some crew under there for the collapsing ring or throwing a guy through the floor of the ring spots that I've seen on youtube, moving poo poo and putting some sort of padding in the right spot? They must have that rehearsed as to where the right spot to drop the guy is?

laz0rbeak posted:It's pretty common for the ring crew to come down between matches and fix things up/rig up any pyro at ringside, so I imagine it wouldn't be heard to have a wrestler come out with blacks on over his ring gear and then just go under the ring while the announcers are talking up the next show or during the kiss cam or whatever. What about big, hard to disguise guys like the Wyatts who are large and bearded? I can't imagine them subtly sneaking under the ring. I don't know anything about venue construction - are trap doors common or what? I can easily imagine a relatively normal looking guy sneaking in with the crew, but giant beardmen seem to make that impossible.

Why is it that the face tag team is almost always in the far left corner and the heel tag team tends to be in the near right one?

Ok, how about defining a pair of terms that I've seen a lot of: 1. Rapadoo, used as a verb. Google's got nothing. 2. Doug. Again, I see Doug mentioned, usually after a comma at the end of a sentence.

Right around when I stopped watching wrestling was when HHH was first introduced in WWF as a snobby blue blood type. How on earth did they transition his character from that into generic angry man? Also, why do many wrestlers have long hair? It seems like you're just asking for it to be pulled or get it caught even accidentally.

What was the logic driving the decision to transfer the WWF title from Bob Backlund to Diesel in an untelevised house show? I remember the footage they showed on TV looked like it was taken with a camcorder, poorly. Why didn't they wait for RAW or something?

Why is it that the guy being swung around in circles by Cesaro always holds their own head with both hands like that? To reduce chance of injury? To make the swing itself easier?

I was just watching Smackdown and Batista was wearing taped up sneakers. This leads to my question: why do most wrestlers wear tall boots, almost all the ladies and some men wear short boots and a couple of people get away with sneakers? Is there a certain advantage to one over another?

MassRafTer posted:Some trainers drill it into your skull you should wear boots to look like a wrestler. They also provide needed support and prevent ankle injuries. They also weigh a ton so some wrestlers (especially high flyers) like to wear lighter boots or shoes. Ok, that makes some sense. Why do the ladies seem to all go with short boots though? And why do Cena and Batista, who are not high fliers, wear sneakers? Personal preference?

I wasn't watching wrestling at the time, but the lightning special effects I've seen in some of the Undertaker clips, like where he shoots lightning and whatnot, or lightning strikes his coffin, was that all done in post or through some sort of trickery live? If so, how the heck did they pull that off?

This might be me remembering wrongly, but when I was kid matches didn't tend to leave the ring that often, and when they did it was important. Attacks outside the ring were made out to be a Big Deal. Now it seems like the matches leave the ring several times per match and it's a non-event. When and why did this switch happen?

Have there ever been any wrestlers who work a style completely contrary to their body type? Like a short scrawny guy working like a giant? I know there are examples of big guys doing some of the more "small guy" type moves like Brock and his SSP but I'd find it really amusing to see a guy like DBD acting like Big Show or something.

I also watched the Bushwhackers vs Iron Sheik/Kozlov today which is usually considered the worst, but that's just a bunch of old guys being terrible - it's not nearly as offensive as Jenna vs Sharmell. Why do the announce desks have those bulky, dangerous and small monitors? At this point wouldn't it make more sense to just give them LCDs or something? It's always extremely distracting seeing the wrestlers pull the monitors out of the desk, and I always worry about them getting hurt what with those big heavy monitors and all the loving wires. You'd think they'd be able to build those things safer by now.

Lord Hypnostache posted:So I just started watching WWE again a couple of weeks before Wrestlemania, I had stopped watching around the time Shawn Michaels and Edge retired. There's a couple of things I haven't quite caught up yet. Last year, before the Rumble, they had Daniel Bryan join the Wyatt Family (swamp cult, heels) in a dumb attempt to try and get the crowds to stop chanting for him nonstop. It didn't work, it lasted about 2 weeks because the audience just rejected it entirely. This isn't his greatest match, but this was probably the most amazing Daniel Bryan moment of them all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttiGTC5B2gg Also, he was concussed at the time so he doesn't remember it at all, which sucks. It gives me chills watching it though, every single time. As for matches, his last PPV singles match against Roman Reigns was really good. So were his matches at Wrestlemania 30, the HHH one especially but the main event is also really good. He's one of the best wrestlers on the planet, so you'll have a hard time finding anything less than good matches from him.

triplexpac posted:They send everyone through NXT because they want to give NXT credit for building the next generation of guys. It's that simple, really. I thought it was also because Original Sin Cara was such a loving disaster. And the guys down there now who are complete are learning how to work to the WWE camera setup, which is a big thing. Pay attention to some of the pin covers and you see them panic because the logical pin they should make doesn't have their face on the hard camera so they have to jump over the guy on his back to get into position. It's distracting and working with that setup for some time will get them acclimated to it.

St Evan Echoes posted:Yeah I noticed Owens do this a lot in his early matches. Either his first Neville match or first Zayn match he was constantly having to scoot over and pin facing the hard camera It's very common on NXT shows. And that's not a problem with any of these people's work, it's just part of adapting to the WWE system. Better to make mistakes in developmental in front of a crowd that adores everyone (except Corbin, who had to scurry over Rhyno after his finisher on the last Takeover) than on the main roster where Kevin Dunn will have a hissy fit because you weren't in position for his cameras or whatever. Also now that I've pointed it out you're more likely to be aware of it.

Basic Chunnel posted:Early on in Balor vs. Owens in Brooklyn it seems like there's something going on that catches the attention of the audience taking place somewhere behind the announce table. What was it? I'm assuming just some fan trying to get himself over. things happened: First, several people tried to throw streamers into the ring, like in Beast in the East. None of the streamers made it into the ring and only one was visible on the camera. Second, this led to "You can't throw!" chants because the throwers were really close. Third, they were escorted out by security, which led to "Let them stay" chants. Fourth, now that we were fixated on the match, we realized that the titantron and the screens above the ring were just showing the Takeover logo and no the action in the ring. In the nosebleeds this was a big problem because we couldn't loving see the belt due to the lighting rig. This led to "Turn the screen on!" chants, of which I was a part because loving hell we couldn't see much of anything. Eventually the screens started working. Finally, the streamer throwers were allowed to go back to their seats. They got massive applause and "Yes!" chants. Pretty much everything that could draw our attention away from the first 10 minutes of the match did.

When I was very little I remember going on playdates and lots of kids had Ultimate Warrior stuffed toys of some sort. Then, sometime after I was 5 I was given a ring with large rubber wrestlers from a cousin - I think it was Hogan, Sheik, Snuka and one other. I started watching sometime around Wrestlemania 9 and I thought it was really cool that they were wrestling outside at a roman coliseum.

Don't get me wrong, Bayley is a good wrestler, but in order for her to truly shine she needed someone on a godly tier like Sasha to get her up to where she is now. I wouldn't say Sasha made Bayley, Bayley as a character was complete well before Brooklyn. Sasha's Takeover matches with Bayley made Bayley's wrestling into a stronger part of her character though. She's no longer just going to hug you, she's now able to stand up for herself and kick butt. I would argue that Sasha made Becky though. That match was almost as good and got Becky over like nothing else had.
