"It's a Yuletide!"

So yesterday at a friends house we were zappin' through the channels and caught an episode of Vintage on Eurosport. It was Lex Luger vs Yokozuna at (I think?) a Summerslam. I guess this isn't really a question and more of a statement but jesus it seemed to drag on forever. Mind you, we switched to it when it was seemingly already going for a while and switched channels again before it ended.

Highlights were Lex Luger in the corner trying to sneakily look over his shoulder and then dodging the worst salt attack Mr Fuji has ever pulled off and Yokozuna missing pretty much every offensive move. This has tainted my childhood memories of really digging both these guys when I was but a wee lad :(

This isn't really a question but.. it's 1:15 am here in Germany and I'm zapping through channels, getting stuck on this terrible, terrible b-movie asia flick called Black Mask 2 (check here) and suddenly, out of nowhere, Rob Van Dam shows up.

The premise apparently is that some crazy dude crossed lizard DNA with human DNA and Rob Van Dam is one of his subjects/lackeys/something or other. It's so bad it's hilarious and even though Rob seems to be having a rather small role, I find it incredibly funny to see him do some martial arts fighting with horrible make up and really bad CGI lizard parts coming out of him and whatnot. I advise everyone to see this if they somehow can.

Edit: Okay so RVD apparently has a giant head that can... extend tentacles to kill people? I'm really not understanding very much of what is going on but it's definitely getting better by the minute.

Haha oh man, that was so good.. "Hahahahahahaha....... ha!" and then the other guy starts blabbering away into the mic and when he stops Shane just goes "Indeeeeeeeeeeed". Man I wish my memory wasn't so lovely and I could remember more stuff like this.

"It's a Yuletide!"

So I was home sick from work all of last week and somehow ended up mindlessly clicking videos on YT. I, of course, ended up on wrestling videos and man was there some stuff going on there.

From awesome Attitude Era things like a bazillion Rock promos and Mankind turning back into Cactus Jack against HHH to some crazy rear end WCW bullshit that seriously blew my mind (again) to some Legends of Wrestling roundtables, topping it off with a re-watch of Beyond the Mat.. it was all pretty good and fun stuff. Way nostalgic and fun to see, especially since I apparently only remembered the Mick Foley part at the end of Beyond the Mat where he's all shocked at the reaction of his kids (what did you expect, Mick?) and then just goes and does it all again anyway because.. well, he's Mick Foley.

My first question here is, was the HHH/Mankind/Cactus Jack stuff awesome? I don't remember it and it sounded awesome but I couldn't find anything but the maybe 1.5 minute Mankind promo where he goes "YOU MIGHT KNOW HIM, HE'S CACTUS JACK!", rips off his Mask and HHH has the biggest, most awesome "oh my god I'm making GBS threads my pants more than ever before" look on his face.

Of course I couldn't end all this on the good stuff and somehow stumbled upon a video some dude made of the whole "Kane is trying to figure out who put Undertaker in a vegetative state" storyline compressed into like, 45 minutes of just cut together promos, backstage segments and whatever else.

Holy poo poo, who the gently caress thought all that up? I vaguely remember watching parts of it and it wasn't even that long ago iirc but man, that went from "sort of intriguing" to "hell in a handbasket" real quick, especially seeing it compressed like that. The first few Kane promos and stuff were good, it was fairly interesting. Then, after dragging it out for seemingly eons, Kane starts pinning it on Rey Mysterio out of all people :psyduck: I mean apart from the fact that Rey barely had any reason to do it in-universe, who was seriously supposed to believe tiny Rey could put sit-up-from-sure-defeat Undertaker, the Deadman, the Phenom into a vegetative state?

And to end it all on the worst swerve they could've possibly thought up by making Kane the culprit after all this long-rear end time just completely blew my fever riddled mind. Was this as atrocious to follow in real time while poo poo was going down from week to week? I can only imagine it being even worse. I seriously want someone to compensate me for those ~45 minutes of my life.

That sounds awesome and I don't think I've ever seen any of that, at least not completely. Can you guys give me a list of matches/promos that I should watch to get most of the feud?

Wow this is blowing my mind right now. I remember there being vague talks about WWE bringing Sid back but everyone was like "Bring Sid back? Ha ha ha yeah right!" and I thought nothing ever came of it. Was this the only time they ever used him? He seriously looks exactly the same as I remember him except he has apparently really torn a bunch of his hair out. Also I apparently remember him less terrible and rusty :(

I haven't watched WWE in a very long time but I still follow the threads on here and am pretty much caught up from what you guys post. It absolutely blows my mind that Taker actually worked a Raw again. I mean, I know WHY he is there (lack of talent etc.) but hasn't it been forever since he worked anything outside of Wrestlemania? Sure he had some appearances here or there to build to a Mania or whatever but when was the last time he actually worked more than his fabled "one match per year"? I'm not quite sure why I'm so amazed by this but it's honestly blowing my mind right now.

On the ratings timeline of the Monday Night Wars when you play WWE '13 Attitude Mode, there's a little icon that points to a date where WCW formed the nWo. Shortly before that, there's a huge drop for WCW to like, 2 in the ratings and an equally huge spike for WWF up to I think 4 or something?

What happened there? It's only a relatively short spike and then WCW pulls ahead again but it sticks out like a sore thumb and I'm too stupid to remember what big event caused this.

abraxas

"It's a Yuletide!"

Here's what seems to be a more detailed timeline than the one on the loading screen of the game. I'm talking about the spike/dropoff around March to June 96, mostly the one where WCW goes down below 2 and WWF spikes up a bit above 4. The even bigger WWF spike before that would also be interesting to find out about!

e: Welp and Skinty McEdger answers it just as I post this :v: Thanks!

So the MITB briefcase is supposed to hold a contract that allows the holder a shot at a title at a moment of their choosing. However, whenever anyone "cashes in" they just bring the briefcase and throw it in the ring or hand it to the ref.

Have they ever shown the ref or anyone else opening the briefcase to check that the contract is executed or even in the briefcase at all? What's to stop a MITB winner from tossing in the briefcase but hanging on to the contract (in case they lose, to effectively cash in twice)?

I think this could be a good idea for a storyline! But in reality it's just to keep the "OH poo poo HE'S CASHING IN!!!" moment going that they're (most of the time) going for. If you had them hand over the briefcase and the ref slowly opens it and checks and reads the contract and checks to see if all signatures are on it and if it's legit and stamped and dated correctly, hyperbolically speaking, it would take away all the momentum and the surprise moment of the cash in.

To piggy back on the boots thing (sorta). When did refs stop checking a wrestlers boots and pads for FOREIGN OBJECTS. It's been a long time since we've had a good foreign object sighting.

Reminds me of the Rock/Shamrock match from the '98 Rumble I watched recently. What a stupid finish. Rock hits Shamrock with some brass knucks and slips them into Shamrocks pants. Shamrock ends up kicking out and winning but for some inexplicable reason the Ref was a little suspicious because... reasons? He then started to pat down Shamrock and found the brass knucks in his pants and reversed his decision, awarding the match to Rock and keeping him champion.

Makes me kinda thankful that foreign objects are mostly a thing of the past.

Related to this, I'm currently going through a bunch of random late 90s PPVs and I was wondering when did Heat die? Or rather, when did they stop doing Heat (or really any show) before a PPV? I really used to love the idea and hearing about it on commentary when watching these old PPVs has brought a serious wave of nostalgia back for me. Especially considering that often times the Heat before a PPV had some serious consequences for the following PPV. I'm watching Backlash 99 right now and apparently the Heat before that was used to make the Rock/Austin match a No Holds Barred match. I can only imagine that nowadays this would cause an incredible clusterfuck of last minute ideas and changes by Vince but I have to say, I kinda miss it :(

All this talk of Tough Enough reminds me of my recent voyage into the PPV days of around 2000. Maven, who won the first Tough Enough, was pretty "big" in the Hardcore Title scene and both JR and King were flabbergasted at how McMahon could waste a draft pick on him at the very first draft after the brand split. I don't even remember anything about Maven, dude looked so awfully generic and small.

I remember having this problem maybe even around the same time. Which browser are you using? Isn't the WWE also a lot harder on audience members in this day and age? Like remember all those "wonderful" Attitude Era signs and look what kind of stuff we get nowadays. I assume if you started taking off your shirt being a drunk idiot they'd escort you out or something because that's not in line with their PG WWE Universe vision or whatever.
