In the south, they simply farm out prison inmates to work at fast food restaurants to pay off their restitution. That's whose probably working during the school hours-the people who can't get custody of their kids until they finish their jail sentence and pay off their $7,000 jaywalking fine first.

I love that riots of that type are basically an argument from the Second Amendment: If there's a tyranny going on and no useful recourse to prevent it, let's say when the government starts extra-judicially murdering people and keeps getting away with it, then go out, become ungovernable, and make it so that it costs everyone too much to keep doing. I suppose the idea with firearms is making it cost too much in bloodshed, except which government cares about blood cost? Hit them in the property they care about more than life. They should be really down with that, the right wing.

I've come to the realization that I'm woefully unqualified to research things outside a very narrow range of personal expertise. I've got a good number of heuristics to sniff out an obvious scam, so I'm not helpless, but how the hell am I going to figure out which microwave I should buy? I actually know how those work on a theoretical level, but that's not going to help one bit when it comes to reliability and quality of cooking. I can get some info out of reviews, but that only goes so far. Ultimately, I decided to shell out for a subscription to Consumer Reports. All my friends and coworkers know I have it, so I get to be the go-to guy when someone needs a new fridge. If I were to try and replicate their process, which honestly is probably lacking, I'd have to spend an absurd amount of money. And that's kind of the problem with "do your own research"
