We can all learn from our past mistakes.

Starring: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Ving Rhames and James Cromwell.
Running Time: 98 minutes

A brilliant scientist (James Cromwell) develops these remote controlled human-like robots called surrogates, these are designed to allow physically disabled people experience the world. However in the year 2017 98% of the world's population owns and uses their surrogates to do everything for them; wash, shop, work, etc.. So everyone is at home lying in bed all day while their robot avatars get to live for them. This new world is one without racism (that 20 year old blonde might be a 60 black male), murder (no one leaves home and destroying a surrogate doesn't harm the user) and fun (we witness a conversation between the protagonist and his wife who are discussing going to Hawaii and she wants to experince the trip with her surrogate while he wants to go as himself). It's a very boring place.

However a weapon falls into the wrong hands that can destroy the surrogate's circuits and kill its user simultaneously. FBI agent Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) and his partner (Radha Mitchell) find out about this weapon after investigating the first murder in years. Other people want to get their hands on this weapon, especially "The Prophet" (Ving Rhames) who leads a human coalition who are very anti-surrogate and live in enclaves in major cities.

The movie isn't that good, it's relatively short and somewhat predictable. By itself it's an average action flick but it does get a good feel for the world. Surrogates have passed the uncanny valley but their physical perfection is very jarring when you see their operators wasting away in bed with the lack of sunlight and exercise. Also everyone seems completely detached from eachother. Greer and his wife have been living in the same apartment for years but she always locks her door to her room and only speaks to him with her surrogate. You can't help but wonder how good this could have been if it was a thriller and a deep character study.

Not recommended unless you have seen everything else at the cinema or you really like Bruce Willis.

2.5/5
