Can it hit you if you fly something stationary like hover a helicopter or fly a balloon?

I'm relatively sure there aren't air to air collisions in X-Plane (there is wake turbulence, but I think you just go right through the other plane). And I'm certain the evil mad dog will stay barely aloft and just attempt to zoom at you.

NTSB released a report on the Atlas Air flight that nosedived outside of Houston a year ago. Cause: first officer (flying) succumbed to a “pitch-up somatogravic illusion," essentially was fooled into thinking there was a stall and ended up increasing the descent too much to recover.

Nosing down 120,000lbs of thrust from 6000ft is a hell of a thing

Everything about this accident is just indescribably incomprehensible. I can't imagine the anger being felt right now by the family of the captain and the jump seater. This should have been an altitude deviation of a couple hundred feet at the absolute worst.

Yeah, it's only 16 seconds once the altimeter starts unwinding quickly. I guess accidental activation of the TO/GA button is the main theory, then subsequently perceiving the acceleration as a stall and reacting to it.

The FO never should have been hired (Atlas admits as much in one of the interviews in the docket), since he had a clear pattern of training failures, and only got the job because he didn't list some previous employers, so Atlas couldn't do a PRIA request from them and find out about even more failures.

I do find it darkly hilarious that Amazon rewarded Mesa (which was the last employer of the accident FO) for crashing a 767 by giving them 737's to operate.

Yep, and HR didn’t follow up on employment gaps.

Five degrees to starboard!

AOPA put out a case study video for the Lake Renegade that cartwheeled into the lake at Oshkosh in 2017.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o29C5QGp3LQ

The short version is a 30,000 hour ATP pilot ignored a dozen other people telling him it was a bad idea to depart and got himself and a passenger killed.

Are domestic flights still generally half empty right now?

I'm asking because I know that Denver and Kansas City Centers are both working 70-75% of their normal traffic right now. However, TSA data shows that we're still under 30% of normal passenger numbers. The lack of international travel is obviously going to play into that but I know those numbers are well lower than domestic ones during normal times. So all I can think is that a large number of domestic flights aren't anywhere near full but they keep adding more. Am I way off here or is that at least somewhat accurate?

A few months ago someone posted a link to a huge set of old air navigation maps but I've lost the link. They were official US government issue and had great topo data plus misc. useful information for flying.

Does any remember what I'm talking about? I'd love to get one of my local area that's as old as possible and get it printed 1:1 but I can't find the site myself.

The Library of Congress website has all the old aviation sectionals if that's what you're looking for.
